Book excerpt: Abstract: The majority of academic referrals made to school psychologists involve reading problems (Joseph, 2002). One area in which students may struggle, reading comprehension, was determined by the National Reading Panel to be a critically important factor in the development of reading skills and academic strategies (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 2000). The purpose of the current study was to provide educators with information regarding the effectiveness of two strategies for increasing students' comprehension of text, as measured by multiple choice questions. An experimental strategy, the maze procedure, and a well documented and widely used strategy, repeated readings, were examined. The results of the current study suggest that repeated readings and the maze procedure produce comparable outcomes when performance on both factual and inferential comprehension questions is considered together. However, they had differential effects on factual and inferential question answering, with the maze procedure resulting in higher student performance on factual questions and the repeated reading condition resulting in higher student performance on inferential questions. Additionally, participants preferred the maze procedure and found the maze more helpful than repeated reading for answering comprehension questions. These findings emphasize the importance of utilizing a number of strategies for improving students reading skills and maintaining their interest in reading-related tasks.
