Book excerpt: This study was designed to analyze the results of an anonymous survey given to students and staff at Liberty North High School. The purpose of the study and the survey was to determine the perceived effectiveness on the advisory program in the school by both teachers and students. Chi square was used to analyze the 125 surveys collected to test the statistical dependence of the research questions posed in the surveys in regards to awareness of the purpose of the program, connectedness to advisor/advisee, opinion on time and topics covered in the program and whether or not the topics and lessons are actually carried through in particular advisory. The findings of this study recommend that though students and teachers feel they have enough time to work in advisory, they still do not feel that they are making the connections that are the primary goal of the advisory program. They feel the need for more focus on post-secondary preparation in advisory as well. This study will delve deeper into these questions and attempt to create a plan to help create an advisory that will be beneficial to all involved.

Book excerpt: In one high school, an advisory program was put into place to promote students' sense of belonging as a main goal. However, the effectiveness of this program had not been evaluated, and research was needed for a better understanding of program outcomes. The purpose of this mixed methods case study was to evaluate one high school advisory program with a special focus on the program's effect on the students' sense of belonging. Tinto's model of student retention provided the theoretical foundation for this study. The research questions focused on perceptions of the process and outcomes of the advisory program from the perspectives of 9th and 10th grade advisees, 12th grade assistant advisors, and teacher-advisors. Two hundred fourteen 9th and 10th grade advisees, 41 12th grade assistant advisors, and 14 teacher advisors completed surveys. Responses to the qualitative open-ended questions on the survey were analyzed using typological analysis, including both predetermined and inductive categories. Findings indicated that the advisees benefited from the interaction with advisors, wanted more time for advisory, and were concerned about academics. Assistant advisors requested larger roles in the program. Advisors felt that the advisees benefited from the interaction of being part of a group and recommended that the curriculum needed continuous improvement. Responses to the quantitative Likert style questions on the survey rating program goals were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results indicated that advisees agreed that all goals were being met. Recommendations include giving the 12th grade assistant advisors larger roles, providing more frequent or longer advisory meetings, and engagement in continuous revision of the curriculum. Social change implications are effective advisory programs may lead to better overall success in high school, thus decreasing dropout rates.

Book excerpt: How can a high school advisory and mentoring program be established? Schools report that more and more students seem to slip through the cracks or are lost in the shuffle. More students fail ninth grade than any other grade level. William Glasser (1986) estimates that schools fail to engage more than half the students because they fail to fulfill four basic human needs for students: to belong and love, to gain power, to be free, and to have fun. Schools are turning to advisory and mentoring programs as a way to insure that each student is known well by at least one adult in the building, an adult to whom the student can turn for help with both school related and personal issues. Its purpose is to personalize the institution in order to better meet the needs of students. Advisors typically serve as the initial point of contact for parents and monitor the student's progress. Most of the literature about teacher advisory programs is written for the middle level, but the concept is gaining acceptance and popularity in high schools, as well. Data were gathered through staff interviews, staff surveys, student focus groups, student surveys, and document analysis of the advisory programs. The study examined advisory organizational structures, advisor role, school counselor role, professional development, and the perceptions of staff and students on the benefits and drawbacks of advisory programming for adolescents, staff, and school communities The research examined the degree of alignment between the advisory organizational structures and the social emotional programming framework (SEL) proposed by Daniel Golman's Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. The research findings indicated there is variability among the advisory structures, role of school counselors, and professional development training and resources of advisory programs in secondary schools as largely influenced by the bureaucracy of school systems. Advisory programs have produced both positive and negative outcomes for school communities in fostering the social emotional development of adolescents, building staff/student relationships/connections, and developing a positive school culture and climate. This research study suggests secondary schools model advisory organizational structures based on the social emotional learning framework to produce more positive academic and social emotional outcomes for adolescents and school communities in shaping a positive school climate.

To address the lack of teacher leadership in engineering education policymaking and how it might be mitigated as engineering education becomes more widespread in Kâ€"12 education in the United States, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a convocation on September 30â€"October 1, 2016. Participants explored how strategic connections both within and outside classrooms and schools might catalyze new avenues of teacher preparation and professional development, integrated curriculum development, and more comprehensive assessment of knowledge, skills, and attitudes about engineering in the Kâ€"12 curriculum. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the event.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: This mixed methods program evaluation examines the effectiveness of a high school advisory program in meeting its stated goals from the perspective of its various stakeholders. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods and applying a concurrent embedded strategy, the researcher uses Stufflebeam's CIPP Model (Stufflebeam, McKee & McKee, 2003) as a framework to conduct a study of the Teachers-As-Advisors (TAA) Program in a rural high school in Georgia. Surveys were administered to 205 students, 40 parents, and 17 advisors. Two district administrators, three school administrators, and two counselors were interviewed. In addition, focus group discussions were held with a purposeful sample of students, recent graduates, parents, and faculty advisors. As a final step, the ancillary materials utilized in the program were analyzed. Analysis of the data collected indicates that stakeholders believe the program goals are being met. Identified strengths of the program include the advisors who serve as caring, adult advocates for advisees, monitor their advisees' academic progress, and celebrate their achievements. Advisor training, communication between the home and school, and a balanced curriculum were identified as areas needing improvement. The end goal for program evaluation (Stufflebeam et al., 2003) is to determine a program's effectiveness in order to inform decision making about the program. The findings from this study will be disseminated to school and district administrators and the School Advisory Committee, in order to enable school leaders to make informed decisions about the TAA program.
