Book The Effectiveness of Response to Intervention as a Tool to Raise Academic Achievement in Fifth Grade Students

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Response to Intervention as a Tool to Raise Academic Achievement in Fifth Grade Students written by Alonna M. Van Scoy and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In education, the pendulum swings from one side to the other, with many methods of instruction being proven not effective and later found effective. The problem the researcher set out to find was; Is Response to Intervention (RTI) an effective tool to raise student academic achievement? RTI was a new method of instruction in 2010 and many schools within the nation began to implement this type of instruction, but did it work? The researcher collected student test scores from the California State Test (CST) and from the Little Lake City School District, in Norwalk, California, district benchmark assessments. Perception data and school process data was also collected from students and teachers at William Orr Elementary School, through surveys and interviews. The research found that RTI is an effective tool to help improve student academic achievement. In the years prior to the implementation of RTI, had been in place for 2.5 years, student test scores had risen dramatically. RTI is accountable for flexible groupings of students, student assessments to collect data, data reflections and collaboration, and scientifically proven methods of instruction. These components along with the data collected, prove that at William Orr Elementary School, RTI is an effective tool to raise student academic achievement.

Book excerpt: Are we missing the opportunity to reach struggling learners from the very beginning? Are we hastily—and unnecessarily— referring students to intervention programs that substitute for high-quality core instruction? What if we could eliminate the need for intervention programs in the first place? Response to Intervention (RTI) programs are only as powerful and effective as the core instruction on which they're built. High-quality instruction, then, is the key ingredient that helps all students excel, and it's at the heart of Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey's unique approach to the RTI model — Response to Instruction and Intervention, or RTI2. In Enhancing RTI, the authors argue that students learn best when classroom instruction and supplemental intervention mirror each other in both content and purpose. This book provides K-12 teachers with the knowledge and tools they need to implement a cohesive RTI2 system that helps all children learn by proactively addressing their needs. To this end, you will learn how to * Integrate and align core instruction and supplemental intervention. * Assess your own classroom instruction, in addition to your students' responses to it. * Strengthen existing school improvement efforts within an RTI2 framework. * Utilize systematic feedback to raise student achievement. Fisher and Frey maintain that the RTI2 model not only promotes active student learning, but it also, when done right, promotes a culture of hardwired excellence at all levels of instruction.

Early childhood education, testing, reading, special education, discipline, loss of the arts, and school facilities, are all areas experiencing reform in the wrong direction. This book says “no” to the reforms that fail, and challenges Americans to address the real student needs that will fix public schools and make America strong.

Book Progress Monitoring to Detect the Effectiveness of Response to Intervention Reading Interventions for Low Performing Elementary Student

Download or read book Progress Monitoring to Detect the Effectiveness of Response to Intervention Reading Interventions for Low Performing Elementary Student written by Shannon Stephanie Gavin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of progress monitoring in an elementary school, as 16 second through fifth-grade students participated in Response to Intervention (RTI) nine-month small group instruction intervention in reading comprehension and fluency. This study examined the following research question: "What does student progress monitoring tell educators about the effectiveness of a Response to Intervention multi-tiered system of support with second through fifth-grade students who have IEPs and who have been referred for additional support through a Student Study Team process?" The dependent variable was the tracking and analysis of students' literacy skills over the school year on a trimester basis as recorded on the AIMSweb research-based assessment for monitoring literacy performance and progress. Results indicate that participating students experienced notable yet varying progress students in reading comprehension and fluency over the course of a school year. Data suggest that progress needed to be monitored on at least the trimester basis employed in this study to accurately capture students' growth in reading achievement. Progress monitoring assessment that followed the two-week winter break or a week break led to depressed performances for some students. Students had better results when they were assessed following periods of regular instruction without break or when assessed at the end rather than the beginning of a week.

Book Teaching Strategies for Effective Fifth Grade Math Intervention

Download or read book Teaching Strategies for Effective Fifth Grade Math Intervention written by Alicia A. Zank and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to determine what effects explicit and systematic math intervention instruction will have on student's performance on math assessments. The study will focus on a small group of fifth grade students that have been identified as needing targeted intervention (tier 2) and intensive interventions (tier 1) through the Response to Intervention (RtI) process. During a scheduled daily thirty minute math intervention block, the researcher will focus on using explicit and systematic instruction to help students make progress and close gaps in the area of mathematics. To track student data and ensure consistency, the researcher will utilize an instructional checklist, progress monitoring assessment, student interest survey, and behavior monitoring checklist. The desired outcome will produce results about instructional practices and strategies that help students with math deficiencies to make progress. The following are appended: (1) Data Collection Matrix; (2) Data Collection Tool 1: Instructional Strategy Checklist; (3) Data Collection Tool 2: Diagnostic Assessment/Progress Monitoring Tool; (4) Data Collection Tool 3: Interest Survey; (5) Data Collection Tool 4: Student Behavior Notes; (6) Data Collection Timeline; and (7) Data Tables.
