Book The Effects of Responsible Investment

Download or read book The Effects of Responsible Investment written by Jonathan Harris and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on three key questions for responsible investors: 1. Does responsible investment lead to outperformance or underperformance? 2. Can responsible investing actually impact company behaviour? 3. What is the optimal way to allocate an investment portfolio in a responsible way? These questions are answered by constructing an equilibrium model of the financial economy in which active neutral investors (with no knowledge or regard for environmental risk) and active responsible investors (who take environmental risk into account) bid for shares in companies with varying levels of environmental risk. The companies in turn are able to pay a cost to reduce their environmental risk. Companies choose the amount of reduction that they pay for so as to maximise their share price, as determined by demand for their shares from the active investors. In addition, several types of passive index investors are considered in the model including investors who follow a Divestment strategy, an Environmental Tracking (ET) index strategy and a combined Environmental Tracking and Divestment strategy.

Book The Medium long Term Impact of Cross border Investments Into Sub Saharan Africa by Listed South African Companies

Download or read book The Medium long Term Impact of Cross border Investments Into Sub Saharan Africa by Listed South African Companies written by Pieter Christiaan De Jager and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into whether the medium-long term impact on shareholders' value of acquiring companies engaged in cross-border merger and acquisition transactions (CBMA) into Sub-Saharan Africa. By focussing on companies listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) and testing the general hypothesis whether the shareholders of acquiring companies earn statistically significant positive or negative returns within the medium-long term after the announcement date of a cross-border merger and acquisition transaction. Out of a total of 10,167 merger and acquisition transactions over the eight-year period between 2000 and 2007, only 12 cross-border mergers and acquisitions into Sub-Saharan Africa satisfied all the selection criteria. By exhaustive application of the single-factor market model to calculate the regression formula using 4 years of historical share price performance data, the results suggested that statistically significant negative weighted average abnormal returns for shareholders are consistently present over the event window. The study on the medium-long term event window starting 21 days prior to the first public announce of the transactions and continued up to 252 trading days after the announcement date. Thus it satisfied common critique by researchers about the true value of short term event studies for companies and their shareholders. Copyright.

Book The Relationship Between Environmental Social Governance Factors and Stock Returns

Download or read book The Relationship Between Environmental Social Governance Factors and Stock Returns written by John R. Evans and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus by investment practitioners on the impacts of non-traditional environmental and governance issues has intensified in recent times as a result of global events. This paper examines the relationship between environmental social governance (ESG) factors and financial performance of US listed companies by considering not only impacts on stock return but also stock valuation and operating performance. Using a multifactor framework, this study provides evidence of a significant positive relationship between particular ESG rating criteria and both return on assets and market to book value measures, supporting the stakeholder theory that Corporate Social Performance (CSP) is positive for Corporate Financial Performance (CFP). Analysis also shows that employment conditions are a more relevant influence than other stakeholder criteria and a company's involvement in more general non-stakeholder related social issues contributes negatively to both operating performance and stock return.

Book Stock Market Returns of Leading Green Companies of USA in Comparison with Their Benchmark Indices

Download or read book Stock Market Returns of Leading Green Companies of USA in Comparison with Their Benchmark Indices written by Ajith Sankar R.N. and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Companies are increasingly finding innovative ways to do business in a sustainable manner. These corporations are responding to their own needs to run a conscience-driven business and also the needs of consumers who are looking forward to buy products and services that are friendly to the natural environment. A concern among companies and investors that wanted to go green was whether it will affect the competitiveness of the company and its stock market returns. This paper sets out to assess whether companies engaged in green practices has lower than average stock market returns. An empirical study was carried out using a simple research tool, percentage analysis. The study measured stock market returns over various time frames for leading companies that are ecology friendly, and it was compared with the stock market returns of leading benchmark indices. Rankings generated by an independent body, the Newsweek magazine's Green Rankings, was used during the study. Certain preliminary conclusions are derived. The research led to the suggestion that the stock market returns of companies engaged in green practices are higher than the broad market returns. The study was limited to companies listed in US stock exchanges. The study only used the first list released by Newsweek - Newsweek Green Ranking 2009. The study may give hope and confidence to individuals and firms that engaging in green practices may help to improve the purpose of their existence. This study may break the long-held belief that doing good to the society by going green does not make good business sense. In a context where matching the returns provided by the broad market index itself is considered an achievement by the investors, an out-performance signals that being ecologically sustainable need not mean lesser returns to investors. Fund management firms may look into investing in firms that are only green. Individuals may consider investment in environment-friendly companies as a safer option for investment. Firms may look into improving their focus on green practices.

Book Fiscal Regimes for Extractive Industries Design and Implementation

This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better designed and implemented fiscal regimes for oil, gas, and mining can make a substantial contribution to the revenue needs of many developing countries while ensuring an attractive return for investors, according to a new policy paper from the International Monetary Fund. Revenues from extractive industries (EIs) have major macroeconomic implications. The EIs account for over half of government revenues in many petroleum-rich countries, and for over 20 percent in mining countries. About one-third of IMF member countries find (or could find) resource revenues “macro-critical” – especially with large numbers of recent new discoveries and planned oil, gas, and mining developments. IMF policy advice and technical assistance in the field has massively expanded in recent years – driven by demand from member countries and supported by increased donor finance. The paper sets out the analytical framework underpinning, and key elements of, the country-specific advice given. Also available in Arabic: ????? ??????? ?????? ???????? ???????????: ??????? ???????? Book Finding the Value in Environmental Social and Governance Performance

Download or read book Finding the Value in Environmental Social and Governance Performance written by Dinah Koehler and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We'd all like to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. This is no less true in the world of sustainable investing, which seeks to leverage a company's environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance to identify winning stocks. To date, managers of approximately $30 trillion in financial assets - all signatories to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI) - are trying to identify companies with higher levels of ESG performance and strong returns. For nearly all of the world's largest publicly traded companies, reporting on ESG performance is table stakes. ESG management is on the agenda of more CFOs. Yet when questioned, many investors doubt whether that pot of gold exists, and companies are having a hard time convincing them. These doubts have been detrimental to how much companies invest in ESG management, and make it more difficult to argue for mandating disclosure of ESG metrics because they are financially material. Integration of ESG criteria into investment strategy has reached an estimated $10.7 trillion in assets under management, only about seven percent of the total global market. How companies approach ESG and report their performance varies greatly, and this idiosyncratic behavior only further clouds the issue. Mixed messages from the academic community do not help.At the heart of the matter is the kind of information investors pay attention to. Our review of the empirical research on investor behavior confirms that ESG issues can trigger a crisis, which often leads to fundamental changes in a company's management, culture and financial well-being. A growing class of risks, they can be financially material and increasingly a concern in today's growth-challenged and volatile environment, where even small shocks from the outside world can impact whether a company sinks or swims. Those companies that are demonstrably prepared for ESG shocks can better mitigate the downside risks, both short and long-term. This makes disclosure on how companies manage their ESG risks all the more critical, because it can help capture investor interest and establish the long-term value of ESG management.
