Book The Effect of Varying Intensity Levels of LIPUS Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound On The Rate of Orthodontic Tooth Movement in Mice

Download or read book The Effect of Varying Intensity Levels of LIPUS Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound On The Rate of Orthodontic Tooth Movement in Mice written by Afsaneh Rangiani and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of LIPUS on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) has been studied before, but there is a big controversy over the role of LIPUS on the rate of OTM. Also the mechanism of this process is largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different intensities of LIPUS on OTM, as well as anabolic and catabolic properties on the bone. For this reason 24 animals were randomly divided into four groups, and on each group different intensities of LIPUS were applied (control, 15 mW/cm2, 30 mW/cm2, and 50 mW/cm2 groups). All animals received orthodontic appliance and tooth movement on the right side of the maxilla, and left side was used as control. A combination of micro-CT analysis, TRAP staining and immunohistochemistry was used to analyze and compare the rate of tooth movement, bone density, osteoclastic activity and bone markers between the four groups. Our results showed the rate of tooth movement changes depending on the intensity of ultrasound. There was a significant increase in the rate of tooth movement in 30 mW/cm2 group compared to 15 and 50 mW/cm2. Osteoclasts number was increased in 30 group compared to 50 and 15 mW/cm2, and also expression of important paracrine factors detected, such as VEGF and PGE2, varied based on the intensity. In conclusion OTM changes with using LIPUS. These changes in OTM happen through series of biological reactions controlling PGE2 and VEGF expression as well as osteoclast numbers in response to the force. LIPUS has an application in clinical orthodontics for acceleration or retention purposes.

Book Effect of Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound on Orthodontically Induced Root Resorption Caused by Torque

Download or read book Effect of Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound on Orthodontically Induced Root Resorption Caused by Torque written by Hasnain Raza and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthodontically induced root resorption (OIIRR) is an undesirable consequence of orthodontic treatment and may lead to permanent loss of root structure. A previous clinical trial demonstrated the effect of LIPUS on tipping type of OTM and reported that LIPUS can promote cementogenesis. However, the effect of LIPUS on other types of OTM still remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of LIPUS on OIIRR caused by torque in human subjects. The study sample consisted of 10 healthy human patients between the ages of 12-35 years at the start of the study who required extraction of all first premolars as a part of their routine orthodontic treatment plan. A 15 degree twist was applied in the arch wire using 0.019 x 0.025 TMA wire producing a torque (buccal root) at the bracket level of approximately 5 N-mm. Using a split mouth design, randomization and blinding, one side of the arch received LIPUS for twenty minutes per day for four weeks at an incident intensity of 30mW/cm2 of the transducers surface area. The other side served as a self-control which received a sham transducer. After 4 weeks, all first premolars were extracted for regular orthodontic treatment and a micro-CT analysis was performed of these extracted teeth. Comparison between the two groups was performed using Linear mixed model analysis. LIPUS treated teeth showed significantly less damage compared to control as LIPUS reduced the total volume of resorption lacunae by a mean difference of (0.537 +/- 0.092 mm3) (P

Book Biology of Orthodontic Tooth Movement

Download or read book Biology of Orthodontic Tooth Movement written by Bhavna Shroff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the current knowledge and understanding of the biological processes involved in the orthodontic movement of teeth and discusses recent progress in the field. It links research advances to their immediate clinical applications and offers researchers and clinicians a state of the art reference on topical issues relating to orthodontic tooth movement. Biological events play a central role in the movement of teeth during orthodontic therapy. The basis for understanding the sequence of cellular events that leads to orthodontic movement has been well established in the literature through the use of animal models. In recent years, researchers and clinicians have focused their efforts on developing treatment modalities to increase the speed of orthodontic treatment and provide better anchorage options for noncompliant patients. This book will be an invaluable aid in understanding the biology of tooth movement and the relevance of the latest concepts to clinical practice.

Book Ehlers Danlos Syndrome A Multidisciplinary Approach

Download or read book Ehlers Danlos Syndrome A Multidisciplinary Approach written by J.W.G. Jacobs and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generalized hypermobility has been known since ancient times, and a clinical description of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is said to have first been recorded by Hippocrates in 400 BC. Hypermobility syndromes occur frequently, but the wide spectrum of possible symptoms, coupled with a relative lack of awareness and recognition, are the reason that they are frequently not recognized, or remain undiagnosed. This book is an international, multidisciplinary guide to hypermobility syndromes, and EDS in particular. It aims to create better awareness of hypermobility syndromes among health professionals, including medical specialists, and to be a guide to the management of such syndromes for patients and practitioners. It is intended for use in daily clinical practice rather than as a reference book for research or the latest developments, and has been written to be understandable for any healthcare worker or educated patient without compromise to the scientific content. The book is organized as follows: chapters on classifications and genetics are followed by chapters on individual types, organ (system) manifestations and complications, and finally ethics and therapeutic strategies, with an appendix on surgery and the precautions which should attend it. A special effort has been made to take account of the perspective of the patient; two of the editors have EDS. The book will be of interest to patients with hypermobility syndromes and their families, as well as to all those healthcare practitioners who may encounter such syndromes in the course of their work.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive atlas is unique in combining information on the embryological development of the human with detailed presentation of the congenital malformations encountered in clinical practice. As a consequence it will not only assist practitioners and trainees in recognizing and evaluating malformations, but also enable them to understand how a malformation has developed and to explain the mystery of congenital malformations to relatives and patients. The book is organized according to anatomic region, with additional chapters on hernias, tumors, lymphogenesis and lymphatic malformations. According to WHO statistics, each year congenital anomalies result in approximately 3.2 million birth defect-related disabilities worldwide. All too often, however, training in embryology is now a neglected area, and medical graduates frequently lack confidence in their knowledge of the field. Clinical Embryology: An Atlas of Congenital Malformations will help to rectify this deficit and to ensure that malformations are comprehended and managed appropriately. It will be of value for postgraduate trainees in pediatric surgery, pediatrics, and neonatology, undergraduate medical students, and general practitioners/family physicians.
