Book Reduced Tillage for Corn and Cotton in Arid and Semi arid Southwestern USA

Download or read book Reduced Tillage for Corn and Cotton in Arid and Semi arid Southwestern USA written by Sifat Sultana and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results demonstrated that for both test crops, all of the soil quality indicators except for pre-planting MWD in cotton field soil were unaffected by tillage treatments. For cotton in 2017 and both 2017 and 2018 in corn, field measurements of soil included the soil penetration resistance (PR), water infiltration rates (IR) and volumetric moisture content (VMC) of the soil taken at different intervals. Soil PR showed variability throughout the growing season for different depths of soil for both test crops. In 2017, the cornfield soil PR was significantly lowest for PT at the beginning of the season. In the mid-season, the PR became insignificant for 0-10 and 20-30 cm depth for different tillage treatments; but in the 10-20 cm depth, PT showed significantly lowest PR. In the post-harvest phase, PR was done in the 0-10 and 10-20 cm depth only because the PR at 20-30 cm depth exceeded the measuring capacity of the instrument. PR for the upper depths of soil were not significantly different among the tillage treatments. For all the 2018 PR measurements during the pre-planting, mid-season and post-harvest measurements, there were no significant tillage effects on the soil PR. In the cotton field in 2017, the PR readings were significantly affected by different tillage treatments at the beginning and the middle of the season. In post-harvest soil, for 0-10 and 10-20 depth of soil, there was no effect of tillage. However, in the subsurface depth (20-30 cm), PT had a significantly lower PR compared to BT, and PR of ST exceeded the measurement limit of the instrument. For cotton in 2017 and both years for corn, IR was not affected significantly at the beginning and end of the season. For both test crops, VMC showed variability throughout the growing seasons of 2017 and 2018. This study shows that RT practices can successfully substitute conventional tillage practices for cotton and silage corn in irrigated cropping systems of New Mexico with comparable yields and higher net returns as well as better soil health maintenance. Keywords: Reduced tillage, conventional tillage, strip tillage, plow-tillage, no-tillage.

Book Evaluation of Cotton Agronomic Practices

Download or read book Evaluation of Cotton Agronomic Practices written by Savana Suzanne Davis and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continual release of high-yielding cultivars and the need to maximum agricultural productivity on less acreage requires research regarding cotton agronomic practices including fertility, irrigation, and cover crops. Studies were conducted from 2016 to 2018 to evaluate cotton response to K fertilizer applications in irrigated and rainfed environments on K-deficient soils, response to cover crop species with various termination timings, and cover crop effects on water infiltration and soil health in conventional tillage systems. On K deficient soils, cotton yields had a linear response to K fertilizer application rate in all studies. Foliar K applications were compared to granular applications and no benefits were observed. Cover crop species had less of an effect on cotton growth and yield than did termination timing but cover crops improved water infiltration and bulk density. Direct benefits to cotton are expected when cover crops are implemented over time.
