Book The Effect of Two Types of Text Modification on English Language Learners Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effect of Two Types of Text Modification on English Language Learners Reading Comprehension written by Suzanne Marie Maxwell and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two types of modification (simplification and elaboration) on fourth grade English language learners' reading comprehension scores of an expository text. Three English reading passages in one of three forms, unmodified, simplified or elaborated, were presented to seventy participants who were divided into high and low proficiency groups. To test the participants' reading comprehension of three expository texts, a nine-item multiple choice test was administered. Each of the texts had a total of three comprehension questions corresponding to its content. The test items consisted of three types of comprehension questions, one each of general, specific and inferential. The analysis of variance done on this study showed that there was not a statistical difference between the mean scores of the students' reading comprehension tests based on the form that they read, nor based on their reading proficiency levels. In general, the results of this study do not provide a clear indication of any significant effect that text modification can have on fourth grade English language learners reading comprehension. Therefore, these findings suggest that caution should be used when generalizing the findings and claims from other text modification studies done with high school and university level students to elementary level students.

Book The Effects of Symbol Imagery Instruction Versus Visualizing verbalizing Instruction on the Reading Comprehension of Middle School English Language Learners with Specific Learning Disabilities

Download or read book The Effects of Symbol Imagery Instruction Versus Visualizing verbalizing Instruction on the Reading Comprehension of Middle School English Language Learners with Specific Learning Disabilities written by Jennifer Bickford-Rivera and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examined the effects of two scientifically based academic reading interventions upon students who had no previous opportunity for interventions prior to qualification for special education. The Lindamood-Bell Learning Process offers two programs to intensively intervene with students having difficulty in reading. One of the programs, Seeing Stars, focuses on the development of symbol imagery in phonemic awareness. The other, Visualizing-Verbalizing, develops students' concept imagery. This study compared the effectiveness of the two programs on reading comprehension for middle school English language (EL) learners eligible for special education in the category of Specific Learning Disabilities. In this quantitative study, the independent variable was the method of instruction (i.e., symbol imagery instruction versus visualize-verbalize instruction). The dependent variable was the pre-post change of students' reading comprehension as measured by the Basic Reading Inventory, Ekwall/Shanker Reading Inventory, and the Gray Oral Reading Test (GORT). Overall, the results show reading comprehension growth for most students using either intervention. Except for three students, over the six-week instructional period, participants showed from six months to two years growth, with the mean growth over both intervention groups being nine months. Results suggest that both reading interventions can have a powerful positive impact with English language learners eligible for special education. Key words: Phonemic awareness, symbol imagery, visualizing and verbalizing Strategy, scientifically based interventions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an area that has been somewhat overlooked in the literature to date – the current status and future trends of English education in Oman. It offers a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to the subject and explores areas of English education in Oman that have, until now, been little investigated. It explores these issues from a variety of perspectives: the professionalization of English teachers in the country; the implementation of novel teaching methodologies, curricula, and assessment approaches, into what are, in many ways, still very traditional education settings; the integration of learner identity into English language instruction; country- and culture-specific concerns with conducting research with Omani participants; the strategic demands of building stronger links between education and workforce needs; and developing learner autonomy and motivation.

Download or read book The Knowledge Gap written by Natalie Wexler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the root cause of America's education crisis--and the seemingly endless cycle of multigenerational poverty. It was only after years within the education reform movement that Natalie Wexler stumbled across a hidden explanation for our country's frustrating lack of progress when it comes to providing every child with a quality education. The problem wasn't one of the usual scapegoats: lazy teachers, shoddy facilities, lack of accountability. It was something no one was talking about: the elementary school curriculum's intense focus on decontextualized reading comprehension "skills" at the expense of actual knowledge. In the tradition of Dale Russakoff's The Prize and Dana Goldstein's The Teacher Wars, Wexler brings together history, research, and compelling characters to pull back the curtain on this fundamental flaw in our education system--one that fellow reformers, journalists, and policymakers have long overlooked, and of which the general public, including many parents, remains unaware. But The Knowledge Gap isn't just a story of what schools have gotten so wrong--it also follows innovative educators who are in the process of shedding their deeply ingrained habits, and describes the rewards that have come along: students who are not only excited to learn but are also acquiring the knowledge and vocabulary that will enable them to succeed. If we truly want to fix our education system and unlock the potential of our neediest children, we have no choice but to pay attention.

Book Are You Gonna Make Us Read Outta the Book this Year Mr Gilder

Download or read book Are You Gonna Make Us Read Outta the Book this Year Mr Gilder written by Jason Field Gilder and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Question: To what extent does teaching the reading strategy of identifying cause and effect by using a graphic organizer impact my students' comprehension of their history text? Research Activities: This research was conducted in an 11th grade college prep, U.S. History classroom in a large suburban California high school where I am the teacher of record. There are 33 students in the classroom. Four of the students in the class have been re-designated as English Language Proficient. There are also 3 English Language Learners in the class. I chose 4 focus students to look at for the intervention. Each of them has Spanish as a home language. One is English Language Proficient, one was recently re-designated English Language Proficient, and two are still classified as English Language Learners. The intervention took place over a week and a half, from January 20th, 2009 to February 4, 2009. The intervention involved direct instruction, teacher-led whole class work and modeling, paired in-class work, and independent work. The class also did whole-class guided work correction and analysis. I collected several forms of data throughout the intervention. I began the intervention with an attitudinal survey. I also administered a baseline assessment, a mid-intervention quiz, two sets of paired/independent graphic organizers, a final assessment and a final survey. The purpose of this intervention was to determine the effect on students' comprehension of their history text of teaching cause and effect text structure and of utilizing a graphic organizer. Before the intervention, over one-half of my students lacked an awareness or a knowledge of problems they encountered while they read, and over one-half the students couldn't point to any specific strategies they used while reading. After the intervention, based on the analysis of their surveys and an interview with the focus students, nearly the whole class saw value in and an appreciation of how understanding text structure can lead to better reading comprehension. The class average increased from a 76% on the baseline assessment to an 80% on the final assessment. On the final assessment, the students made fewer comprehension-related errors. This indicated that they were using a learned strategy to assist in reading comprehension and that the strategy indeed helped with reading comprehension. Instructional Approaches: Assessment/Evaluation, Class discussion, Cooperative learning, Direct Instruction, Homework, Graphic Organizers/Concept Maps, Reading-Comprehension, Reading-Strategies, Think-alouds.

Book Genre Variation and Reading Comprehension

Download or read book Genre Variation and Reading Comprehension written by Shahabaddin Behtary and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen increased attention being given to the notion of genre in ELT. In spite of the fact that the impact of genre instruction on writing is well researched, little attempts have been made to investigate whether genre variation can affect learners' reading comprehension. This study tried to clarify if text genre, proficiency level or their interaction had any effect on the reading comprehension of students. Ninety-three students of medicine took a reading comprehension test which had two types of texts each in a different genre, one medical (ESP) and the other general (EGP). In order to compare their performance on both genres and across proficiency levels, a split-plot ANOVA was applied. The findings indicated that text genre and proficiency level, but not their interaction, had significant effects on the reading comprehension. The participants were more proficient in comprehending EGP texts than ESP ones. This shows the relative superiority of topic familiarity over text structure familiarity in text processing. The inability of readability formulas to exactly mirror text difficulty might be another reason for the outperformance of learners on EGP texts.
