Book Auditory and Vestibular Efferents

Download or read book Auditory and Vestibular Efferents written by David K. Ryugo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efferent sensory systems have emerged as major components of processing by the central nervous system. Whereas the afferent sensory systems bring environmental information into the brain, efferent systems function to monitor, sharpen, and attend selectively to certain stimuli while ignoring others. This ability of the brain to implement these functions enables the organism to make fine discriminations and to respond appropriately to environmental conditions so that survival is enhanced. Our focus will be on auditory and vestibular efferents, topics linked together by the inner ear connection. The biological utility of the efferent system is striking. How it functions is less well understood, and with each new discovery, more questions arise. The book that is proposed here reflects our vision to share what is known on the topic by authors who actually have made the observations.

Book Auditory Efferent System New Insights from Cortex to Cochlea

Download or read book Auditory Efferent System New Insights from Cortex to Cochlea written by Paul H. Delano and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main function of the sensory systems is the transducing of external stimuli into bioelectrical signals, which are conducted through afferent pathways from sensory epithelia to the brain. However, it is known that descending projections are ubiquitous in the different sensory modalities, and in the case of auditory efferents connect the cerebral cortex with sensory receptor cells. Several functions have been attributed to the efferent system, including protection to acoustic trauma, unmasking of auditory stimuli in background noise, balance of interaural sensitivity and some cognitive functions like modulation of cochlear sensitivity during selective attention to auditory or visual stimuli. In addition there is evidence of a possible involvement of the efferent system in the etiology or treatment of some clinical pathologies like tinnitus. In this e-book, entitled “Auditory Efferent System: New Insights from Cortex to Cochlea”, we aimed to give an overview of the advances concerning the descending projections from the auditory cortex to subcortical nuclei and the olivocochlear system. In addition, different theoretical proposals of efferent functions are presented. We think that this e-book is an important contribution to the understanding of the efferent system in mammals, merging auditory-cortex literature with studies performed in the olivocochlear system.

Book excerpt: Authored by 17 international researchers and research teams, the book provides up-to-date insights on topics in five different research areas related to normal hearing and deafness. Techniques for assessment of hearing and the appropriateness of the Mongolian gerbil as a model for age-dependent hearing loss in humans are presented. Parental attitudes to childhood deafness and role of early intervention for better treatment of hearing loss are also discussed. Comprehensive details are provided on the role of different environmental insults including injuries in causing deafness. Additionally, many genes involved in hearing loss are reviewed and the genetics of recessively inherited moderate to severe and progressive deafness is covered for the first time. The book also details established and evolving therapies for treatment of deafness.

Book Biophysics of the Cochlea

Download or read book Biophysics of the Cochlea written by Ernst Dalhoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of an international hearing-research conference held in Germany 2002. The conference brought together experts in genetics, molecular and cellular biology, physiology, engineering, physics, mathematics, audiology and medicine to synthesize and extend our understanding of how the cochlea works. Topics are discussed experimentally and theoretically at the molecular, cellular and whole-organ levels. Some of the topics are: mechanosensitivity of motor proteins; mechanochemical transduction by motor proteins; mechanoelectrical transduction in the stereocilia of hair cells; electromechanical transduction in the stereocilia, soma and synapses of hair cells; multidimensional vibration of the organ of Corti; and otoacoustic emissions. This book will be invaluable to researchers and students in auditory science.

Book Active Processes and Otoacoustic Emissions in Hearing

Download or read book Active Processes and Otoacoustic Emissions in Hearing written by Geoffrey A. Manley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-20 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cochlea does not just pick up sound, it also produces sounds of low intensity called Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs). Sounds produced by healthy ears – either spontaneously or in response to stimuli - allow researchers and clinicians to study hearing and cochlear function noninvasively in both animals and humans. This book presents the first serious review of the biological basis of these otoacoustic emissions.

Book Meniere s Disease 1999 Update

Download or read book Meniere s Disease 1999 Update written by Olivier Sterkers and published by Kugler Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth International Symposium on Menière’s Disease was held in Paris in April 1999, in the Montparnasse area close to Prosper Menière’s tomb. This meeting followed the three earlier symposia on Menière’s disease, which have been organized every six years since 1981 in Düsseldorf, Boston and, most recently, in Rome. 1999 saw the bicentenary of Menière’s birth, and to commemorate this, François Legent organized a historical symposium on the different aspects of Prosper Menière’s life. Together with Michel Portmann, the two honorary presidents, Robert Kimura and Jean-Marc Sterkers, gave excellent lectures on the two main topics of Menière’s disease: on experimental endolymphatic hydrops, and the role of both vestibular neurectomy and sac surgery. Numerous papers were presented on research and clinical experiences, and were particularly devoted to the better understanding of both the development of experimental endolymphatic hydrops and the evolution of Menière’s disease. Attention was also drawn to the local treatment of Menière’s disease by the application of drugs to the round window, and furthermore, the indications for and results of surgery for incapacitating vertigo were well defined. Finally, we are pleased to say that this was a very successful meeting and we would like to express our thanks to all the companies, and in particular Solvay Pharmaceuticals, that supported this event. We are certain that the first international symposium of the new millennium on Menière’s disease, which is to be organized by David Lim in the USA, will be even more successful and fruitful than this one. The organizing committee
