Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled "The Effect of Phonological Awareness on Learning English as a Second Language: A Study with Korean and Chinese Subjects." Submitted by Wong Man Ching Vanessa for the degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in June 2006 The effect of phonological awareness on learning English as a second language from Korean and Chinese was investigated in this study. Three Korean-English bilingual children and three Chinese children whose first language (L1) is Cantonese were tested in second-language (L2; English) phonological skills focusing on phonological processing. It is found that phonological skills in L1 and L2 were strongly correlated, and phonological skill in both LI and L2 was correlated with L2 reading and contributed a unique variance to L2 reading, even though the children's LI was not written in an alphabetic orthography, whereas the 2nd language had an alphabetic orthography. This research adds to a growing body of evidence for cross-language transfer of phonological processing in L2 learning of English-as-a-Second-Language students. The target sample was the preschool level in the Lebanese private school (ages 4, 5 & 6). The instrument used to collect data was a 35-item assessment test. One-hundred and eighteen children were assessed in Kindergarten II from three different schools which implement diverse instructional methods in learning a second language (English). Book excerpt: Today, American public schools are facing a major demographic shift—the number of students from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds has dramatically grown over the past two decades. These students, many of whom enter school without being able to speak English, are expected to perform at grade level while simultaneously learning to speak, read, and write in a new language. However, data reveal a widening gap between the reading achievement of native speakers and students who speak English as a second language. In short, ELLs (English Language Learners) are struggling to achieve grade-level reading proficiency. While researchers in first language (L1) reading acquisition have investigated extensively the mechanisms involved in how children learn to read in their first language, second language (L2) reading research has only recently become its own discipline. Investigations in L1 reading have provided much of the research for L2 reading. Identifying the necessary components and effective instruction for improving the reading achievement of L2 learners is no small feat. Reading is a multidimensional process for first language learners, but this process becomes even more complex when considering the myriad of factors involved in second language reading: linguistic differences, literacy background, language exposure, oral language proficiency, etc. Much research has targeted the components of reading—this research indicates that phonological awareness and oral language skills are especially critical during the early stages of reading and beyond. In this essay, I define reading and illustrate the processes involved in fluent reading. I also present leading models of L1 and L2 reading. I describe the dual nature of L2 reading and synthesize current findings on L2 reading development. Next, I investigate research on the effects of phonological awareness and oral language on L1 and L2 reading achievement. Lastly, I suggest appropriate instruction to support the growth of phonological awareness and oral language for ELLs in a K-3 classroom.

Book excerpt: The research examined the effects of an evidence-based intervention in the study of phonological awareness and word study at the pre kindergarten and kindergarten level. The research was conducted in the form of a case study with the focus on one English Language Learner (ELL) student. Although intervention groups were held with non-ELL and ELL students alike, the focus was on one ELL student. The intervention group received six weeks of explicit and repeated instruction in phonological awareness and focused on word study development. There were two major findings from this study: the ELL focus student made gains in phonological awareness and when mixed with word study, made significant gains in his end -of -year reading test. The results indicate that small group phonological and word study interventions are crucial for the reading development of young ELLs.
