Book excerpt: Using data collected from undergraduate students attending a southeastern United States University, the current dissertation includes two manuscripts examining the relationships between personal characteristics, financial socialization, financial capability and financial well-being among college students. These relationships were also compared between a focal group of students identifying as minority, low-income, and first-generation students to a comparison group not identifying as minority, low-income, or first-generation students. The first study used structural equation modeling to explore the relationships between personal characteristics (i.e., attachment, locus of control, and self-esteem), financial socialization, and the four dimensions of financial capability (financial knowledge, access to financial resources, attitudes, and actions). Findings suggest financial socialization partially mediated the relationships between personal characteristics and financial attitudes and financial actions. These findings suggest that parents continue to play a role in the development of financial attitudes and behaviors of college students. The second study used regression analysis to examine how financial knowledge and skills (i.e., applied knowledge), materialistic attitudes, compulsive spending behaviors, and access to financial resources (i.e., number of bank accounts, credit cards, and alternative financial services) are related to students’ financial well-being. Findings suggest greater financial skills and less materialistic views are related to greater financial well-being. However, among those not identifying as minority, low-income, or first-generation college students less compulsive spending behaviors and greater credit card use were positively related to financial well-being; among minority, low-income, or first generation college students, alternative financial services usage was related negatively to financial well-being.

The first concern was participation rates of low income students in higher education. The second was the apparent disparity in Internet usage by low income and other disadvantaged individuals, highlighted in the report Falling Through The Net (United States Department of Commerce, 2000). The purpose of this study is to identify the economic factors and demographic attributes that influence participation of low income students in online distance learning courses offered by a Mississippi community college. This study centers on the hypothesis that there is no statistically significant difference between low income and non low income student participation rates in online distance education courses and that the economic factors, other than income, between low income participates and non low income participants will be statistically similar. Survey data collected from analyzed through the use of logistical regression to determine the relationship of demographic and economic factors to the decision to enroll in future online courses. It was found that students who are older and married are less likely to choose to enroll in future online distance learning courses. Students with higher numbers of courses completed and who paid for college with personal funds are more likely to enroll in future online distance learning courses than those with fewer numbers of distance learning hours completed and those who experience less difficulty traveling to campus are less likely to choose to enroll in future distance learning courses.

Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Book excerpt: African American college men have been the subjects of numerous research studies for over a decade; consequently, it would seem that educators have greater insight into these students' experiences than those of any other racial or ethnic group. However, little of this research focuses specifically on the lived experiences of low-income, first-generation African American men at highly selective research institutions. This qualitative study employed narrative inquiry to introduce readers to the lives, realities, aspirations, and hopes of four students at Duke University, Princeton University, Stanford University, and the University of Pennsylvania in order to provide institutional policymakers, university faculty members, administrators, and students with deeply textured and personal insights into the experiences of the men in this demographic. To analyze this qualitative data, I applied a number of critical frameworks and theoretical approaches, including the Anti-Deficit Achievement Framework (Harper, 2012a), Self-Efficacy Theory (Bandura, 1997), Dewey's seminal work on Education and Experience (1938), and other theoretical perspectives on financial, human, social, cultural, and academic capital. The study drew several conclusions, including: 1) the dominant cultural narrative about Black men in higher education elides their real experiences and instead reinforces negative stereotypes; 2) not all first-generation, low-income Black males at highly selective universities are the same; 3) race and class intersect with other identities to complicate the experiences of first-generation, low-income African American male students; 4) not enough is known about low-income, first-generation students of color; 5) financial support is critical for this student population; and 6) co-curricular experiences powerfully shape these students' success in college and beyond. The findings suggest several practical implications for those interested in the success of these students, whether at elite or other types of institutions. In particular, this study offers recommendations for both the students in this demographic and their families, and it synthesizes crucial points for educators and administrators at elite institutions.

Book excerpt: This dissertation reports findings from a case study of the McNair Scholars program at Redstone University, a federal TRIO program designed to motivate and encourage students who are from low income, first-generation families, or from underrepresented minority groups to attend and complete the doctorate. It was combined with an auto-ethnography of my early tertiary schooling experiences through my successful attainment of a PhD. The conceptual framework encompassed cultural difference, symbolic interaction and literacy theoretical perspectives. This orientation allowed critique of the complex web of factors student encountered on personal, interpersonal, professional and structural levels. Participants were studied to understand their development of an academic identity while participating in the program and after they exited the program. Qualitative data methods include long interviews with alumni, students, faculty, course instructors, program alumni, three semesters of seminar observations and students weekly electronic reports collected from the 2003 entering cohort of mostly junior undergraduates.

Book excerpt: First generation college students are a diverse group of students who enter college with unique challenges and varying abilities. Understanding the college experience for first generation students involves an examination of their background characteristics as well as the barriers and supports that impact their college success. This study explores within group differences in a diverse sample of first generation college students. Unlike many other studies that compare first generation students to their continuing generation peers, this study takes a more in-depth look at first generation student characteristics such as gender, race/ethnicity, income, parents' education, sibling education and institution type and their relationship to academic integration, social integration, goal commitment, institutional support and family support. Using a Social Exchange and Life Course framework, as well as elements of Tinto's model of student persistence in college, this study finds differences in student support and integration based on student characteristics and institution type. Findings indicate differences in family support and institutional support based on race, income, parents' education, and sibling education. The findings also reveal differences in social integration and academic integration based on gender, race, parents' education, and sibling education.
