Book excerpt: This study separately estimates the effects of kindergarten-entry age, age-at-test, and schooling on cognitive skills using a new identification strategy. These three variables are considered to be perfectly multicollinear in the period of compulsory schooling so that it is deemed that it is not possible to identify their effects separately. I exploit summer break as a period when age increases but schooling does not. The summer break and the variations in survey date in the NLSY79-CS make it possible to resolve the multicollinearity problem. The instrumental variable estimation results show that kindergarten-entry age has a positive effect on math and reading scores. The aging without schooling during the summer break does not improve any test score. Schooling is the most important factor that improves the cognitive skills among the three factors. The IV estimation with sibling fixed effects and the Regression Discontinuity estimation are also conducted as robustness tests and the results are consistent with the IV estimation results.

Book The Effects of Pre school Enrollment on Math and Literacy Achievement in Kindergarten

Download or read book The Effects of Pre school Enrollment on Math and Literacy Achievement in Kindergarten written by Calandra Ellison-Williamson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to continue the efforts of other researchers in determining whether enrollment in a Pre-K classroom had any impact on students’ literacy and math achievement scores in kindergarten. The researcher conducted a two-way repeated measure ANOVA model for the study. The study sample included 6 teachers and 76 students. After reviewing the findings from the study, there was substantial evidence to support the researcher’s position that Pre-Kindergarten academic achievement and socialization significantly impact the transition into, and during the Kindergarten. The Literature Review substantiated the researcher’s position that Pre-K enrollment is a significant predictor of the student’s overall Kindergarten experience. Moreover, it revealed teachers’ perceptions of readiness, favoring Pre-K enrollment.

Book The Impact of Changes in Kindergarten Entrance Age Policies on Children s Academic Achievement and the Child Care Needs of Families

This book was released on 2003 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past two decades have seen a rising trend in the minimum entrance age for kindergarten in the United States, motivated by findings from studies finding that older entrants perform better than younger entrants on a wide range of outcomes. Delaying kindergarten entrance, however, imposes additional childcare and time costs on families whose children are forced to stay out of school for another year. This dissertation provides new evidence on the causal effect of delaying kindergarten entrance on children's academic achievement in elementary school. The author finds that, compared to other educational interventions, a one-year delay in kindergarten entrance has a positive and significant effect on children's test scores both when they begin school and at the end of two years in school. Although the initial entrance-age effect is smaller among poor and disabled children compared with that for non-poor and non-disabled children. delaying entrance has a sizable effect on test score gains over time for poor and disabled children but a negligible effect on gains for non-poor and non-disabled children. The author also developed an economic model for parents' kindergarten entrance age decisions and examined the effect of socioeconomic factors on these decisions. Higher childcare prices and maternal wages significantly lower the age at which parents desire to send their child to kindergarten.

Book Cutting Off Kindergarten

Book excerpt: For many parents, a child’s completion of kindergarten is a milestone that represents the foundation of formal education. Over many decades, theorists and researchers have attempted to identify the best circumstances that maximize early learning. Therefore, the age at which children enter kindergarten has been a topic of considerable debate. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a relatively late kindergarten entry age cutoff date of December 1 on the development of children’s reading skills during their first year of schooling. Additionally, the relationship between student age and gender on literacy achievement was investigated. Archival data was used for the current study, which represented scores from a standardized literacy assessment. Two-way multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) were conducted to test for significant differences between group means as well as an interaction effect between age and gender. Results revealed that age had a statistically significant impact on initial literacy performance, but not growth over the course of the school year. There was no evidence of a statistically significant interaction between kindergarten entry age and gender, nor did gender have a statistically significant impact on literacy achievement. Overall, findings demonstrate that while school entry age did put younger kindergarten students at an initial academic disadvantage, it dissipated over time as they demonstrated typical skill growth.

Book The Relationship Between Entrance Age and Academic Achievement in Literacy Skills for Kindergarten Students in a Rural School

Download or read book The Relationship Between Entrance Age and Academic Achievement in Literacy Skills for Kindergarten Students in a Rural School written by Rebecca Ann Brower and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parents and teachers are faced with the difficult question of when to enroll their children in kindergarten to be the most academically successful in a rural area. Some parents have started enrolling children in kindergarten at the age of four, despite not being cognitively ready based on the information-processing theory. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between entrance age and the academic achievement of literacy skills for kindergarten students in a rural area. A correlational design was utilized to test the strength and direction of the relationship between two quantitative variables: age and reading achievement in a rural school district. A correlational design was appropriate for this study since in order to measure the degree and direction of the relationship between two or more variables and to explore the magnitude among variables. A scatter plot was used to determine the differences between the predictor variable, age, and criterion variable achievement in reading in a rural school district. The researcher failed to reject the null hypothesis. A total of 221 students participated in the research from three separate public schools in rural Virginia. The results of the study did not indicate a relationship between entrance age measured in months and academic achievement in literacy skills scores. Future research to include how age impacts kindergarten students in other demographic regions, with a larger sample size, would aid in further development of this research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume juxtaposes two different domains of developmental theory: the Piagetian approach and the information-processing approach. Articles by experts in both fields discuss how concepts of development and learning, traditionally approached through cognitive-developmental theories such as Piaget's, are analyzed from the perspective of a task analytic, information-processing approach.

Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book The Early Reading and Mathematics Achievement of Children Who Repeated Kindergarten Or Who Began School a Year Late Statistics In Brief NCES 2006 064

Download or read book The Early Reading and Mathematics Achievement of Children Who Repeated Kindergarten Or Who Began School a Year Late Statistics In Brief NCES 2006 064 written by Lizabeth M. Malone and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most children enter kindergarten when they are 5 years of age and move into first grade when they are 6. This time period is marked by great developmental change (Sameroff and Haith 1996), and children differ in what they can and cannot do socially, physically, and cognitively. Therefore, parents and educators are concerned whether certain children will have the knowledge and skills at age 5 to succeed in kindergarten. Over the years, policies and practices have emerged that are intended to improve children's early school experiences by giving them more time to develop and mature (e.g., changing age of entry requirements, transitional grades, readiness testing). Two such kindergarten enrollment strategies are retaining children for a second year of kindergarten and delaying the start of their first year of kindergarten. This report uses data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K) to examine the relationship between kindergarten enrollment status (e.g., repeating kindergarten or delaying entry into kindergarten) and children's spring first grade reading and mathematics achievement. (Contains 16 endnotes, 1 figure, and 6 tables.).
