Book Japanese Multinationals in China

Download or read book Japanese Multinationals in China written by Sierk A. Horn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is poised to gain global importance as a growth engine for the world economy on a par with Europe and the USA. Japanese multinational enterprises are increasingly active in relocating to China their R&D and capital- and knowledge-intensive production for both export-platform and target market reasons. It is at the juncture of the growing impact of China-related activities of Japanese corporations on the transformation of Japanese management philosophies, on the one hand, and the transformation of the Japanese economy more generally, on the other, that this book is situated. As Japanese corporations re-align activities to increasingly accommodate the growing importance of China as a business location, inter-regional expansion will integrate more deeply the Chinese economy within their global strategies, business structures and decision-taking. By presenting current research and thinking on the significance of corporate Japan’s growing engagement with China, the book explores the following imminent questions: What is China’s future position in the global corporate activities of Japanese firms? How has China’s investment profile changed and how and with what purpose do Japanese firms enforce their Chinese presence? The book sheds light on the implications for European businesses and policy-makers of the consequences of deepening integration of these two economic powerhouses. This book was published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

Book excerpt: Despite the dynamic growth of its economy over the last 20 years, China still has a long way to go to catch up with Japan. In commercial and technological terms, Japan is still the dominant economy in East Asia and is still the leading source of product, production and management innovations in the region, especially in the automotive and electronic industries. However, China is closing the gap year by year. The development of bilateral foreign trade, the increase of Japanese FDI and ODA towards China, and intensified financial and technical co-operation illustrate the considerable potential for mutually profitable business. The Chinese market is opening up and Chinese products are increasingly gaining competitiveness in world markets, threatening the incumbent Japanese firms. Japanese and Chinese companies face each other across a changing competitive environment, which is posing new challenges to corporate and business strategies. Within the context of these developments this book looks from different perspectives at how Japanese companies are reacting to the challenges and opportunities offered by China.

Book The Foreign Factor The Multinational Corporation s Contribution to the Economic Modernization of the Republic of China

This book was released on with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schive (economics, National Taiwan U.) and the Hoover Institution must be the last to insist that the nation of China is represented by a little island in the Pacific that the rest of us (including the US government) call Taiwan. In any event, this is an interesting (if unduly positive) study of the contributions to Taiwan's economy made by direct foreign investment, showing that the associated technological change has greatly aided the island-nation's economic growth. Book The Evolution of Multinationals from Japan and the Asia Pacific

Download or read book The Evolution of Multinationals from Japan and the Asia Pacific written by Robert Fitzgerald and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of the Japanese multinational company (JMNC) marked, from the 1980s onwards, an historic change in the structure and in the dynamics of the international economy. For the first time, businesses from a non-Western nation established a competitive global presence, and they did so by bringing their advanced products and management systems to the developed economies of Europe and North America. In the last 30 years, our interpretations of JMNCs have undergone a series of revisions. Korean firms followed JMNCs in the 1990s and the Chinese likewise in the 2000s. A seeming decline in JMNC competitiveness and developments in the structure of the international economy challenged a business model of parental company direction, control and capabilities. Both trends asked questions about how Japanese subsidiaries should operate in global production chains increasingly reliant on contracting out and off-shoring, and how JMNCs might engage more in strategic cooperation and empower subsidiary decision-making. The contributors to this volume consider a wide range of relevant issues: they demonstrate the long-term evolution of JMNCs; they compare the experience of JMNCs with firms from the other two major Asia Pacific economies, Korea and China; they evaluate the applicability of established foreign direct investment (FDI) theory to MNCs from Japan and the Asia Pacific; and they reflect on the internal organization of JMNCs at the global, national and subnational level. This book was originally published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review. ing. Book R d Investment Of Multinational Corporations And China s Independent Innovation

Download or read book R d Investment Of Multinational Corporations And China s Independent Innovation written by Wen Xiao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has attracted a huge amount of investment in R&D internationalization of multi-national corporations (MNCs), which is playing an important role in its economy. Constrained by natural resources, China has to attach more importance to technological progress and indigenous innovation in order to move beyond the old economic growth model. Technology seems inaccessible to outsiders, which prevents others from doing research in a comprehensive and systematic manner. In this book, technology is regarded as a factor of production that is allocated by MNCs across the world to maximize profits. Such rational economic behavior serves as our entry point to enhance existing theoretical achievements on R&D internationalization.

In a longer cycle of nations and business, we see, unfortunately, a similar pattern for Japanese Multinational Corporations.

The authors draw upon empirical research to analyze the questions facing multinational corporations active in the region, and go on to examine their strategies in production, marketing and corporate finance. They present a comprehensive overview of the current activities of multinational firms from Europe and Japan in South East Asia. The authors address both questions of international strategy and the role of multinational companies in a global economy, while taking into account how national differences affect strategic decision making. Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled The Patterns and Characteristics of Japanese Investments in China Submitted by Wong Sik Ho, Calvin for the Master of Arts in China Area Studies at The University of Hong Kong in June 2003 This study examines the spatial distribution of Japanese Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in China and the Japanese FDI induced cluster developments in China's 5 major cities: Shanghai, Dalian, Beijing, Tianjin and Guangzhou. The empirical results show that Japanese FDI is concentrated mainly in the central or northern coastal areas in China regardless of the administrative or city level. Meanwhile, Japanese FDI concentrates in capital-intensive sectors of Electrical Machinery and Equipment, Transport Machinery and Business, and labor-intensive sectors of Textile and Fiber, and Chemical. More importantly, clusters are found in China's 5 major cities. The Locational Determinants of Japanese FDI in China are government policies, the comparative advantages of coastal areas, proximity, cultural link and the agglomerations effect. On the other hand, iii the reasons behind the sectorial distribution would be the WTO Accession of China and the low cost of labor. More importantly, clusters in China are formed through the upgrade of local economies from investment-driven stage to innovation-driven stage together with the traditional and unique business structure of "Vertical Keiretsu" of Japanese Multinational Corporations. The accession to specialized inputs and talents, the accession to institutions and public goods and government roles also contribute to the formation of clusters in China. The exclusive phenomenon of "Vertical Keiretsu" is unique for Japanese FDI, however previous literatures seldom relate it to the Japanese FDI induced cluster developments in China. In order to fill this research gap, my dissertation focuses on the Japanese FDI induced cluster development with the linkage to the "Vertical Keiretsu." Some unique findings concerning the issue of Japanese FDI induced cluster development in China are yielded. It is hoped that this study can provide some insights to readers to understand the Japanese FDI in China from another perspective. iv DOI: 10.5353/th_b2675644 Subjects: Investments, Japanese - China
