The performance test used in the study was designed to be akin to the kind of training that subjects might employ in the course of routine recreational strength training, although the authors' interest concerns the enhancement of performance that may provide an advantage to military personnel during operations requiring intense physical exertion. Results are presented with regard to subjects' performance in leg- & bench-press repetitions after ingesting caffeine and/or ephedrine or a placebo.

Using a repeated measures, double-blind design, 10 male subjects (21.90 + 1.73 years) performed maximal knee extension using the CYBEX NORM (Cybex International, Ronkonkoma, NY) as a measure of strength; power was measured by the height (cm) of a vertical jump; quickness was measured as the time taken to complete a 40 m maximal shuttle run. Subjects performed the exercise tests 75 min after ingestion of either placebo, caffeine (5 mg.kg-1), ephedrine (1 mg.kg-1), or caffeine + ephedrine. The mean peak torque scores and total work scores for the combination of caffeine and ephedrine condition were significantly (p .05) higher compared to the placebo condition. Book excerpt: The ingestion of either caffeine (C) or ephedrine (E) has been shown to improve performance during high-intensity aerobic activity lasting 10-20 minutes, with an additive effect being found when the combination (C+E) was ingested. The purpose of this study was to determine if the addition of E to C would improve performance in activity lasting longer than 20 minutes. After ingesting either a placebo, C, E, or C+E, 12 subjects performed a ten-kilometre run on a treadmill while wearing a helmet & backpack. Parameters measured included subjects' oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, heart rate, time to run each kilometre, and blood chemistry. Results are compared among the different treatments.

Book excerpt: This report from the Committee on Military Nutrition Research reviews the history of caffeine usage, the metabolism of caffeine, and its physiological effects. The effects of caffeine on physical performance, cognitive function and alertness, and alleviation of sleep deprivation impairments are discussed in light of recent scientific literature. The impact of caffeine consumption on various aspects of health, including cardiovascular disease, reproduction, bone mineral density, and fluid homeostasis are reviewed. The behavioral effects of caffeine are also discussed, including the effect of caffeine on reaction to stress, withdrawal effects, and detrimental effects of high intakes. The amounts of caffeine found to enhance vigilance and reaction time consistently are reviewed and recommendations are made with respect to amounts of caffeine appropriate for maintaining alertness of military personnel during field operations. Recommendations are also provided on the need for appropriate labeling of caffeine-containing supplements, and education of military personnel on the use of these supplements. A brief review of some alternatives to caffeine is also provided.
