To elaborate the idea that this effect arises from the development of within-group consensus, groups of six made explicit group decisions about their subsequent individual choice. Perceived demonstrability of cooperativeness in the dilemma was manipulated through changes both to instructions and the incentives of the dilemma. As demonstrability decreased, so did the proportion of groups deciding to cooperate, leading to a reduction in the group discussion effect. Social decision scheme analysis supported the demonstrability-group decision hypothesis. The interaction between demonstrability, individual opinions and group process is proposed to explain the group discussion effect

Book excerpt: Positive and negative framing, whether in the form of give-some vs. take-some decisions or outcomes involving rewards vs. penalties, can impact people's level of cooperation in social dilemma games. Generally, people are more cooperative when either decisions or outcomes involve gains rather than losses, but a review of the literature indicates that this effect is far from universal. The research presented here proposes that the influence of framing on decision-making in social dilemmas may be mediated by mood, and may also depend on whether the payoff structure is presented as a continuous or step-level dilemma. Two studies were designed to (1) examine the impact of decision framing and outcome framing on level of cooperation in both step-level and continuous social dilemmas, (2) examine the impact of these factors on mood, and (3) see how mood mediates the effect of framing on level of cooperation. Study 1 showed that cooperation is higher when the decision involves taking than when it involves giving, but only in a continuous social dilemma with a positively framed outcome. Study 2 showed a similar effect, but only among men. Although penalties increased anxiety, mood did not influence decision-making. In both studies, people were more cooperative than expected in continuous games. Taken together, these studies illustrate limiting conditions for the elusive effect of higher cooperation in take-some than give-some games, and demonstrate differences between step-level and continuous dilemmas.

Book excerpt: These books grew out of the perception that a number of important conceptual and theoretical advances in research on small group behavior had developed in recent years, but were scattered in rather fragmentary fashion across a diverse literature. Thus, it seemed useful to encourage the formulation of summary accounts. A conference was held in Hamburg with the aim of not only encouraging such developments, but also encouraging the integration of theoretical approaches where possible. These two volumes are the result. Current research on small groups falls roughly into two moderately broad categories, and this classification is reflected in the two books. Volume I addresses theoretical problems associated with the consensual action of task-oriented small groups, whereas Volume II focuses on interpersonal relations and social processes within such groups. The two volumes differ somewhat in that the conceptual work of Volume I tends to address rather strictly defined problems of consensual action, some approaches tending to the axiomatic, whereas the conceptual work described in Volume II is generally less formal and rather general in focus. However, both volumes represent current conceptual work in small group research and can claim to have achieved the original purpose of up-to-date conceptual summaries of progress on new theoretical work.
