Download or read book Alphaherpesviruses written by Sandra Knowles Weller and published by Caister Academic Press Limited. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphaherpesviruses are a fascinating group of DNA viruses that includes important human pathogens such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV): the causative agents of cold sores, genital ulcerous disease, and chickenpox/shingles, respectively. A key attribute of these viruses is their ability to establish lifelong latent infection in the peripheral nervous system of the host. Such persistence requires subversion of the host's immune system and intrinsic antiviral defense mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms of the immune evasion and what triggers viral reactivation is a major challenge for today's researchers. This has prompted enormous research efforts into understanding the molecular and cellular biology of these viruses. This up-to-date and comprehensive volume aims to distill the most important research in this area providing a timely overview of the field. Topics covered include: transcriptional regulation, DNA replication, translational control, virus entry and capsid assembly, the role of microRNAs in infection and oncolytic vectors for cancer therapy. In addition there is coverage of virus-host interactions, including apoptosis, subversion of host protein quality control and DNA damage response pathways, autophagy, establishment and reactivation from latency, interferon responses, immunity and vaccine development. Essential reading for everyone working with alphaherpesviruses and of interest to all virologists working on latent infections.

Book excerpt: How To Be a Bitch: How Women Who Have It All Actually Have It All Have you been in a situation where you say things like, "I can't bring this painting out this way, it is not good enough," "I would have loved to take the job but I think I am not ready for it," or, "Why should I show an interest when other people can do it far better than me?" If you have, it shows that your confidence is low and it is holding you back, limiting your choices, and finally giving your power to perfectionism-something that we shouldn't do. This book has the tricks that will empower you as a woman. You will learn how to outgrow your career. It is time to know how to balance everything in your life. There are also aspects of how to develop good habits, persevering and ensuring you attain more productivity. No one is born blank. Nature has created several placeholders in us - there is the part of us that yearns for the 'Hows.' How do I look attractive? How do I avoid being rude? How do I compare? How do I win over that guy? And, of course, how do I succeed? To each one of these and several others, we have answers. These answers are not carefully thought-out ones - we just happen to know the answers, thanks to society. Society performs one function - it fills in the various blank spaces in our consciousness with different types of ideas, thoughtful and dogmatic. You really cannot blame yourself for having these ideas - not many of us are born geniuses. The ability to sit down and contemplate our affairs very profoundly and critically is something we learn with considerable effort. But because we lack the determination to carry out this exercise, we simply follow the current of society. Do you think I am wrong? Well, let's see, shall we? Book The Metabolism and Toxicity of Fluoride

Download or read book The Metabolism and Toxicity of Fluoride written by Gary M. Whitford and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 1996 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this highly-acclaimed book appeared in 1989, a considerable amount of new information has been published on the diverse effects that fluoride can produce in biological systems. The remarkable decline in dental caries that is now occurring throughout the world can be largely attributed to the use of ingested and topical forms of fluoride. Indeed, fluoride is now widely regarded as the cornerstone of modern preventive dentistry. In addition to its prophylactic qualities, fluoride is currently being investigated for its benefits in the treatment of osteoporosis, ischemia, and other major diseases; in larger doses, however, fluoride is known to cause fluorosis, and in excessive amounts can even lead to death. This newly revised edition includes data from the most recent studies in these areas and provides an up-to-date, critical discussion of fluoride metabolism and toxicity as well as environmental and physiological variables that can affect these processes. It will be of particular interest to dental students and residents, dental educators and researchers, toxicologists, pharmacologists and physiologists.

Book Topical Fluorides A literature review

Download or read book Topical Fluorides A literature review written by Kuldeep Dhama and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental caries is a multi factorial, bacterial, chronic infection that affects millions of people in the world and has become a public health problem. Also referred to as tooth decay, this disease is one of the most common disorders throughout the world, second only to the common cold. Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States and is 5 to 7 times more common than asthma. According to the World Oral Health Report in 2003, dental caries affect 60-80% of school children and a vast majority of adults. Dental caries is a chronic bacterial infection of the hard tissue of the tooth that is characterized by alternating phases of demineralization and remineralization. Dental decay can lead to significant pain and dysfunction that can interfere with basic functions such as eating, sleeping, and speaking. If left untreated, dental caries can result in cavities forming and, eventually, tooth loss. Although the prevalence and severity of dental caries has decreased over the years, this disease can be controlled better with proper fluoride exposure. Fluoride dentifrices have been shown in numerous clinical trials to be effective anticaries agents and have been recognized as a major cause of the remarkable decline in caries prevalence in many developed countries. Dentifrices have been widely adopted around the world as the principle means of delivering topical fluoride and obtaining caries preventive benefits. Although there is documented literature on the use of topical fluorides, the issue needs to be further researched based on the recent documented literature and guidelines regarding use of topical fluorides. Hence, the present review was conducted with the aim to review the available literature on the use and effectiveness of different topical fluorides used in dentistry.
