Book Reading Development in a Second Language

Download or read book Reading Development in a Second Language written by Elizabeth Buchter Bernhardt and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berhardt advocates more principled research and instruction in second language literacy. This book is a personal statement based on her own theory and research as well as that of others. It provides a comprehensive review of what is known about the second language reading process based on principles drawn from the synthesis of empirical data. The discussion is set forth from four main perspectives: an examination of theoretical models of the reading process and their application to second language contexts; a synthesis of empirical data of second language reading research from 1973 to 1989; descriptions of reader-based interactions with second language texts; and curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Book Effect of Topic Familiarity on Literal and Higher order Reading Comprehension

Download or read book Effect of Topic Familiarity on Literal and Higher order Reading Comprehension written by Youssra Sami Kfoury and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activating background knowledge is known to play an important role in reading co mprehension. Many researchers around the world have investigated this topic. Mos t of the studies, however, were conducted in monolingual intermediate and second ary school settings; few of them were conducted in bilingual contexts. In this s tudy, the researcher investigated the effect of topic familiarity and background knowledge on bilingual Lebanese fourth grade students? literal as well as highe r order comprehension. A basic premise behind the study is that background knowl edge is necessary to higher order thinking that involves interpretive, critical and evaluative reading (Pressley, 2001). The study employed a pretest-postest control group experimental design. The sub jects are bilingual Lebanese fourth graders (n=44) learning English as a foreign language (EFL) at a private school in Mount Lebanon. The subjects were assigned to control and experimental conditions. The experimental group received direct instruction in building relevant background knowledge; whereas, the control grou p followed the procedures of lesson planning of their textbooks. Results indicat ed that there was statistically significant difference on the dependent variable of the literal comprehension when reading nonfiction texts in favor of the expe rimental group, and on the dependent variable of the higher order comprehension when reading fiction texts in favor of the control group.

Book Expository Discourse in Children Adolescents and Adults

Download or read book Expository Discourse in Children Adolescents and Adults written by Marilyn A. Nippold and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School success in the 21st century requires proficiency with expository discourse -- the use and understanding of informative language in spoken and written modalities. This occurs, for example, when high school students read their textbooks and listen to their teachers' lectures, and later are asked to demonstrate their knowledge of this complex topic through oral reports and essay examinations. Although many students are proficient with the expository genre, others struggle to meet these expectations. This book is designed to provide information on the use and understanding of expository discourse in school-age children, adolescents, and young adults. Recently, researchers from around the world have been investigating the development of this genre in typical students and in those with language disorders. Although many books have addressed the development of conversational and narrative discourse, by comparison, books devoted to the topic of expository discourse are sparse. This crossdisciplinary volume fills that gap in the literature and makes a unique contribution to the study of language development and disorders. It will be of interest to a range of professionals, including speech-language pathologists, teachers, linguists, and psychologists who are concerned with language development and disorders.

  • Author : Timothy Rasinski
  • Publisher : MDPI
  • Release : 2021-01-21
  • ISBN : 3039432680
  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book Reading Fluency written by Timothy Rasinski and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.
