Book excerpt: Research has suggested that playing classical music in the classroom can be a beneficial tool in improving academic performance, student attitudes, and student behavior. In this study, high school students in two special education English classrooms received regular instruction while music was played at a low level in the background. Academic performance, student attitudes, and student behavior were observed and analyzed over appoximately a four week period, two weeks with background music being played in the classroom and two weeks without background music. The students were given pre and post music option surveys, observed for changes in behavior, and given daily assignments to measure academic performance changes. Analysis of data was based on classroom observations, opinion surveys, and teacher scoring of the daily Simple Solutions English assignments.

Music therapy has had positive effects on these students who deal with psychological stressors or physiological complications. Thus, it has been researched and proven that students who receive music therapy over a long period of time have a success rate that is higher than those students who receive music therapy over a shorter period. Long-term music therapy indicates that music sessions were most effective in increasing self-control, relaxation and comfort levels inside the classroom, allowing more time for teaching.

The results in general education settings have been equivocal but the benefits for students with special education needs cannot be denied. According to research, background music can have a positive effect on students with learning disabilities, students with ADHD, students with emotional disturbance, and also students with autism. In a general education classroom, music can be used to improve mood and result in an increase in academic achievement. The purpose of this research was to determine the extent to which background music is being used in general education classrooms while also discovering why teachers use background music. Many teachers are using music in their classrooms with the benefits, as described by the teachers, being increased task attendance, better focus, and happier, more positive environments. However, most teachers are not aware of the research involving music so it can be assumed that their use of background music is primarily because of the positive effects that they perceive. More importantly, teachers indicated that they would be willing to increase their background music use if lists were compiled for them for different beneficial effects. In the future, background music could be used as a tool to benefit all students in an inclusive classroom.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to examine mainstreamed students with disabilities in a high school music education environment. The research design was descriptive and analytical, studying three observable events: musical, verbal, and behavioral. Four students completed the study and were videotaped in three class sessions. The researcher was also the teacher throughout the study and was videotaped simultaneously with each student. Video tapes were analyzed, and musical, verbal, and behavioral events were documented. The events were categorized and recorded for every ten second time unit of a class or lesson. Data analysis indicated that the high school students with disabilities, who participated in this study, presented classroom behaviors that were conducive to their membership in a music education program at the high school level. Analysis of the data collected from the teacher's videotapes indicates behaviors that were conducive to the participation of students with disabilities in their classes. Analysis of the teacher video tapes suggests that music educators who instruct their class using a variety of techniques including standing in close proximity to the students may be helping the students with disabilities attend to the teacher, thus facilitating their participation in the class activities.
