Book Mature Adipocytes and Perivascular Adipose Tissue Stimulate Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation Effects of Aging and Obesity

Download or read book Mature Adipocytes and Perivascular Adipose Tissue Stimulate Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation Effects of Aging and Obesity written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adipocytes and perivascular adipose tissue are emerging as regulators of vascular function. The effects of adipocytes and perivascular adipose tissue on human smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation were investigated. Conditioned medium was prepared from cultured premature and differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes and from periaortic adipose tissue from young (3 mo) and old (24 mo) Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, lean and obese Zucker rats (3 mo), and WKY rats fed normal chow or a high-fat diet for 3 mo. Conditioned medium from differentiated (but not premature) adipocytes stimulated SMC proliferation, which was abolished by charcoal and proteinase K treatment but was resistant to heat, trypsin, or phospholipase B (to hydrolyze lysophosphatidic acid). Further experiments demonstrated that the growth factor(s) are hydrosoluble and present in the fraction of molecular mass>100 kDa. Moreover, conditioned medium from periaortic adipose tissue stimulated SMC proliferation, which was significantly enhanced in aged rats and in rats fed a high-fat diet but not in obese Zucker rats deficient in functional leptin receptors. In conclusion, mature adipocytes release hydrosoluble protein growth factor(s) with a molecular mass>100 kDa for SMCs. Perivascular adipose tissue stimulates SMC proliferation, which is enhanced in aged WKY and in high-fat, diet-induced obesity but not in leptin receptor-deficient obese Zucker rats. These adipocyte-derived growth factor(s) and the effect of perivascular adipose tissue may be involved in vascular disease associated with aging and obesity.

Book excerpt: This book is a dedicated resource for those sitting the Part A of the MCEM (Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine) examination. It forms an essential revision guide for emergency trainees who need to acquire a broad understanding of the basic sciences, which underpin their approach to clinical problems in the emergency department. Common clinical scenarios are used to highlight the essential underlying basic science principles, providing a link between clinical management and a knowledge of the underlying anatomical, physiological, pathological and biochemical processes. Multiple choice questions with reasoned answers are used to confirm the candidates understanding and for self testing. Unlike other recent revision books which provide MCQ questions with extended answers, this book uses clinical cases linked to the most recent basic science aspects of the CEM syllabus to provide a book that not only serves as a useful revision resource for the Part A component of the MCEM examination, but also a unique way of understanding the processes underlying common clinical cases seen every day in the emergency department. This book is essential for trainees sitting the Part A of the MCEM exam and for clinicians and medical students who need to refresh their knowledge of basic sciences relevant to the management of clinical emergencies.

Book Angiogenesis in Adipose Tissue

Download or read book Angiogenesis in Adipose Tissue written by Yihai Cao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angiogenesis has recently played a critical role in regulation of adipose tissue expansion and regression. Like most other tissues in the body, adipose expansion and regression is accompanied by alteration of blood vessel density and structures. The vascular alteration plays an active role in regulation of adipose tissue size and functions. Targeting blood vessels in the adipose tissue have demonstrated to be a novel approach for possibly treatment of cancer, obesity and other metabolic diseases. This book provides the most updated information on this type research and discusses future opportunities for therapy..

Book Textbook of Vascular Medicine

Download or read book Textbook of Vascular Medicine written by Rhian M. Touyz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook focuses on the vascular biology and physiology that underlie vascular disorders in clinical medicine. Vascular biomedicine is a rapidly growing field as new molecular mechanisms of vascular health and disease are unraveled. Many of the major cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke and vascular dementia are diseases of the vasculature. In addition vascular injury underpins conditions like kidney failure and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. This field is truly multidisciplinary involving scientists in many domains such as molecular and vascular biology, cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology and immunology and inflammation. Clinically, specialists across multiple disciplines are involved in the management of patients with vascular disorders, including cardiologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, neurologists and vascular surgeons. This book covers a wide range of topics and provides an overview of the discipline of vascular biomedicine without aiming at in-depth reviews, but rather offering up-to-date knowledge organized in concise and structured chapters, with key points and pertinent references. The structure of the content provides an integrative and translational approach from basic science (e.g. stem cells) to clinical medicine (e.g. cardiovascular disease). The content of this book is targeted to those who are new in the field of vascular biology and vascular medicine and is ideal for medical students, graduate and postgraduate students, clinical fellows and academic clinicians with an interest in the vascular biology and physiology of cardiovascular disease and related pathologies.
