Book excerpt: Founded on an analysis of scientific literature and backed by an abundance of references, this timely new book examines problems related to sports training, as well as the concept that training-induced changes are founded on adaptive protein synthesis. Discussions include: Alterations in the organism's adaptivity during exercise training Intracellular control of protein synthesis points on molecular mechanisms in exercise training Endocrine mechanisms with regard to acute adaptation during exercise, as well as amplification and post-translation control of the adaptive protein synthesis Practical benefits of the adaptation process in training

Download or read book Sports Endocrinology written by Michelle P. Warren and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-05-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the observation in the 19th century that an extract of the suprarenal bodies injected into the circulation caused a rise in blood pressure, the endocrine system has become a major component in our understanding of human physiology. The introduction of radioimmunoassay techniques and the ability to measure minimal amounts of hor mones (a term derived from the Greek "to excite") have shown that acute exercise causes a release of a large number of hormones and that chronic exercise may further lead to long-term alterations in endocrine homeostasis. Actually, almost every organ and system in the body is affected by physical activity and exercise, much of it through the endocrine and neuroendocrine system. Investigation ofthe effect of acute or chronic physical activity on the endocrine system is a complex matter since the stimulus called "exercise" has many components, such as mode, intensity, duration, and others. In addition, several other factors, such as age, gender, training status, body temperature, circadian rhythm, metabolic state, menstrual cycle, and various external conditions as well as psychological factors, can modify the effect of physical activity on hormonal secretion. Moreover, the physiol9gical stimulus of exercise often provokes several and parallel cascades of biochemical and endocrine changes. It is therefore often extremely difficult to distinguish between primary and secondary events and between cause and effect. These limitations will be discussed in Chapter 1.
Download or read book Endocrinology of Physical Activity and Sport written by Naama Constantini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the influence and interaction between physical activity and the endocrine system are of paramount importance in dealing with a multitude of health problems. In Endocrinology of Physical Activity and Sport, renowned physicians and researchers provide a comprehensive and expanded update on the scientific, clinical and practical components of endocrinology as related to sport and exercise. The authors thoroughly review what is known about how such activity effects the endocrine system and how in turn these hormonal responses affect many other organs and systems of the body. In addition, aspects of endocrinology in non-glandular tissue which have endocrine actions are addressed; for example, adipocytes and the release of leptin and related adipocytokines. Further, a wide range of clinically related topics such as athletic amenorrhea, osteopenia, sarcopenia, and hypogonadism are included. This new edition critically integrates what is known about the complex interaction of the endocrine system in the sports context and will again prove immensely valuable to all physicians and clinical investigators treating those active in sports today.

Download or read book Endocrinology of Physical Activity and Sport written by Anthony C. Hackney and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fully revised and expanded third edition, this comprehensive text represents a compilation of the critical endocrinology topics in the areas of sports medicine, kinesiology and exercise science, written by leading experts in the field. As in previous editions, the focus here is on the critical issues involved in understanding human endocrinology and hormonal workings with regards to physical activity, exercise and sport and how such workings impact the full range of medical conditions, overall health and physiological adaptation. Chapters included discuss the effect of exercise on the HPA axis, the GH-IGF-1 axis, thyroid function, diabetes, and the male and female reproductive systems, among other topics. Additional chapters present the current evidence on circadian endocrine physiology, exercise in older adults, exercise and hormone regulation in weight control, and the effects of overtraining in sports. Chapters brand new to this edition present the role of hormones in muscle hypertrophy, the effect of exercise on hormones in metabolic syndrome patients, how exercise impacts appetite-regulating hormones in clinical populations, and the relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) condition.
Download or read book Skeletal Muscle Metabolism in Exercise and Diabetes written by Erik A. Richter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre was founded in 1994 with the support of a grant from the Danish National Research Foundation. Among the goals for the Centre is the organization of research symposia, with the aim of bringing a limited number ofintemation ally renowned scientists together to discuss the latest developments and perspectives in their field. The first Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre Conference was held in 1995 and dealt with cardiovascular regulation. The Second Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre Confer ence was held from October 23-26, 1997. The topic of the Symposium was Muscle Metabo lism: Regulation, Exercise, and Diabetes. Seventy invited scientists from all over the world discussed their latest research related to skeletal muscle metabolism. The speakers were asked to expand on their presentations and to write short, but comprehensive, chapters about their given topics. The result is 28 peer-reviewed and edited chapters covering many if not all aspects of muscle energy metabolism related to exercise and diabetes. Emphasis is on regulation of glucose and fatty acid metabolism and the mechanisms regulating their use as fuels for the muscle during exercise. In addition, abnormalities in the regulation of glucose metabolism in the diabetic state are described. However, amino acid and protein metabolism are also thoroughly discussed. We believe that this volume brings an unparralleled, up to date, and comprehensive review of the frontiers in muscle metabolism. Erik A.
Download or read book Exercise written by American Physiological Society (1887- ) and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 1238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first section of the Handbook of Physiology to deal exclusively with exercise. It is also the first single volume to analyze in-depth the regulation and integration of motor, respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic systems over the broad range of functions demanded by exercise. Its systematic examination of the regulation of these four systems draws from every area of physiology as well as from pharmacology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology and medicine. It highlights exercise as a uniquely powerful means of exploring the integrative aspects of whole body function. One feature of this volume is its in-depth analysis of the regulatory mechanisms responsible for the close matching of motor, respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic control during exercise. By combining studies of control at cellular and molecular levels with studies on whole animals, this Handbook provides the natural and logical integration that is a hallmark of physiology--and is also what lures many scientists to the study of exercise. The internationally recognized authors provide a critical analysis of the mechanisms that govern control of movement, breathing, pulmonary gas exchange, blood flow and blood pressure, and skeletal muscle metabolism. They examine both functional and structural limits to the performance of organ systems under severe stress and show how these limits can be altered by age and physical conditioning. In some cases this requires treatment of topics that have not been reviewed before such as how the heart interacts mechanically with the pericardium, lung, and chest wall to alter central hemodynamics. This volume offers a unique synthesis of fresh information and ideas about the physiology of exercise that will provide a basis for future investigations in this field. It sets a new standard for the physiological study of exercise and will be of keen interest and lasting value to physiologists, sports scientists, kinesiologists, cardiologists, motor control neurologists, and physicians.
