Book The Edinburgh Review Vol 98

Download or read book The Edinburgh Review Vol 98 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Edinburgh Review, Vol. 98: Or Critical Journal; For July, 1853 October, 1853; To Be Continued Quarterly A recent Swiss traveller describes a village in the Grison country, situated on the slope of a great mountain, of which the strata shelve in the direction of the place. Huge crags directly overhanging the village, and massy enough to sweep the whole of it into the torrent below, have become separated from the main body of the mountain in the course of ages by great fissures, and now scarcely adhere to it. When they give way, the village must perish; it is only a question of time, and the catastrophe may happen any day. For years past, engineers have been sent from time to time to measure the width of the fissures, and report them constantly increasing. The villagers for more than one generation have been fully aware of their danger; subscriptions have been once or twice opened in the cantons and in Germany to enable them to remove; yet they live on in their doomed dwellings from year to year, fortified against the ultimate certainty and daily probability of destruction by the common sentiment - things may last their time, and longer. It is needless to say how much of this popular fatalism is exhibited in the habitual acquiescence of modern society in the political institutions under which it lives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Edinburgh Review, or Critical Journal, Vol. 97: For January, 1853-April, 1853 Those who take an interest in the Ignatian question will do well to read Mr. Bunsen's observations touching the Armenian version in the earlier part of the same preface. They are too long for us to insert here. But we cannot omit quoting his words respecting the opinion in Germany as to this question, which Mr. Churton, we would hope not further designedly than from the bias of prejudice, has very grossly misstated. Book A Musician and Teacher in Nineteenth Century New England

Download or read book A Musician and Teacher in Nineteenth Century New England written by Terese Volk Tuohey and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need for historical studies in music education that focuses on the common person. Historians in general have been doing this for years, but music education history has yet to catch up to the field. Although there have been many biographies and biographical studies about the more well-known music educators, little has been done investigating what teaching was like for the average teacher, and even less is known about teaching music in the early years of music education in the United States. A Musician and Teacher in Nineteenth Century New England: Irving Emerson, 1843-1903 argues that understanding history requires knowledge of the people who lived during the time. This bookfocuses on what Irving Emerson’s life was like as a musician and music teacher during this early and critical period of music education. During this time in history, the growth of music as a curricular study in the United States, from singing schools to classroom singing and note-reading, paralleled Emerson’s teaching career. It was because of the groundwork established by music teachers like Irving Emerson that the music curriculum developed in the twentieth century to include music appreciation, instrumental music ensembles and marching band, along with general music classes and choral music education. This is an invaluable resource to music educators, musicians, and historians alike in understanding the beginnings and formation of what is today music appreciation in the education system.

Book excerpt: Unfinished at the time of Marx's death in 1883 and first published with a preface by Frederick Engels in 1894, the third volume of Das Kapital strove to combine the theories and concepts of the two previous volumes in order to prove conclusively that capitalism is inherently unworkable as a permanent system for society. Here, Marx asserts controversially that - regardless of the efforts of individual capitalists, public authorities or even generous philanthropists - any market economy is inevitably doomed to endure a series of worsening, explosive crises leading finally to complete collapse. But healso offers an inspirational and compelling prediction: that the end of capitalism will culminate, ultimately, in the birth of a far greater form of society.
