Book excerpt: With original European settlements dating back over 300 years, Harford County is rich in evidence of its past inhabitants. Images from the past 100 years show the early movie theaters that stood in Aberdeen, Bel Air, and Havre de Grace, the graceful iron bridge that crossed Deer Creek, the grand stone Archer home with farm animals wandering outside the front door, the general store at Carsins Run, and much more. Historic photographs and postcards document the people who have lived in Harford County, the places they have built, and their way of life. Present-day photographs taken for this book reveal the changes that have occurred. These pages showcase streetscapes, stores, restaurants, homes, schools, and churches from Jarrettsville to Darlington and Cardiff to Riverside. Some are all but forgotten, some have been repurposed, and some have been magnificently restored. Through vintage and modern photographs and postcards, Harford County is revealed then and now.

  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book Edgewood written by Joseph F. Murray and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in southeastern Harford County, Edgewood was established in the mid-1800s as a small village around a train station. It remained small until 1917, when the government took over thousands of acres to create the Edgewood Arsenal military complex. Thousands came to build the arsenal on land previously known for having fertile farms, gentlemen's waterfowl hunting clubs, and one of the earliest meeting places for Methodists in America. World War II brought an even greater increase in military personnel and civilians. Later, numerous housing developments replaced obsolete off-post government buildings. The creation of Route 40 through Edgewood in 1939 and 1940 and the Edgewood exit on Interstate I-95 in 1963 brought travelers and spurred new business.

Book excerpt: Forest Glen, Maryland, a sleepy suburb of Washington, D.C., has weathered the arrival of the railroad, construction of a summer resort, development of a fashionable girl's finishing school, and the establishment of a U.S. Army base. Throughout these times there has always been a close-knit community of homes and people that were often overshadowed by the many diverse events and changes that prevailed here. The focal point of the community--one of only a few extant eclectic architectural follies in the United States and consisting of many international styles--is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the National Park Seminary Historic District.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Inman Park written by Christine V. Marr and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Inman Park, Atlanta's first planned suburb, is one closely tied with transportation ingenuity, trade, and the progressive determination of its citizens. Situated two miles east of downtown Atlanta, Inman Park was farmland when the Civil War ravaged its rolling hills. In the 1890s, Inman Park bloomed into Atlanta's first residential park, the location of choice for Atlanta's social elite. The growth of Atlanta, however, struck a blow to the development of this utopian suburb. By the mid-20th century, the suburb fell into dilapidation, abandoned by the prominent families of Atlanta. It was not until the 1970s that the neighborhood, like Atlanta itself, was raised from its ashes to become the celebrated example of Victorian restoration that it is today and was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book profiles an American community in the nineteenth century to show the larger process by which the nation was transformed from a life close to the frontier to that characteristic of industrial capitalism. Michael Cassity considers this economic change from the broader perspective of an historian of the American people, offering insights into its social implications and consequences. With graceful and moving prose, Cassity focuses on the process of social change, the pains that change generated, and the resistance to it. In the course of this transformation, the author examines the ways in which workers, farmers, businessmen, and women experienced and responded to the rise of a new industrial order.

In Women of Fair Hope, Paul M. Gaston follows the dreams and achievements of three extraordinary women—an early feminist reformer, an educator, and a freed slave—whose individual desires to create a fairer, more equitable society led them to play important roles in the life of that community.
