Road traffic accident is the cause of public health and development crisis. Road traffic accident is also expected to increase in Ethiopia if road safety is not addressed adequately by government. According to world health organization(WHO) globally, the number of people killed in road traffic crashes each year is estimated to be 1.2 million, while the number injured could be as high as 50 million the combined population of five of the world’s large cities. This study will help in identifying the impact of traffic accident on economic growth in Ethiopia. More specifically the study has values for the following bodies with their relevant significance. To create awareness among policy designers, decision makers, to indicate managerial direction for the transport authority and traffic management pertaining to the impact of the traffic accident on economic growth; and, to obtain information, knowledge and experience that may serve to reduce the risk of road traffic accident in the Ethiopia. Moreover, it may be able to serve as a reference for those who are going to carry out further study in this field in depth and as a reading material who are interested to.

Even after more than six months of being licensed to drive alone, teens are two to three times more likely to be in a fatal crash than are the more experienced drivers. Crash rates are significantly higher for male drivers, and young people in the United States are at greater risk of dying or being injured in an automobile than their peers around the world. In fact, in 2003 motor vehicle crashes was the leading cause of death for youth ages 16-20 in the United States. Understanding how and why teen motor vehicle crashes happen is key to developing countermeasures to reduce their number. Applying this understanding to the development of prevention strategies holds significant promise for improving safety but many of these efforts are thwarted by a lack of evidence as to which prevention strategies are most effective. Preventing Teen Motor Crashes presents data from a multidisciplinary group that shared information on emerging technology for studying, monitoring, and controlling driving behavior. Knowing costs is important because it allows comparisons across such disparate health conditions as AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and cancer. This book presents the results of a major study estimating the large and largely overlooked costs of occupational injury and illness--costs as large as those for cancer and over four times the costs of AIDS. The incidence and mortality of occupational injury and illness were assessed by reviewing data from national surveys and applied an attributable-risk-proportion method. Costs were assessed using the human capital method that decomposes costs into direct categories such as medical costs and insurance administration expenses, as well as indirect categories such as lost earnings and lost fringe benefits. The total is estimated to be $155 billion and is likely to be low as it does not include costs associated with pain and suffering or of home care provided by family members.
