Book U S Intervention in British Guiana

Download or read book U S Intervention in British Guiana written by Stephen G. Rabe and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-05-26 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first published account of the massive U.S. covert intervention in British Guiana between 1953 and 1969, Stephen G. Rabe uncovers a Cold War story of imperialism, gender bias, and racism. When the South American colony now known as Guyana was due to gain independence from Britain in the 1960s, U.S. officials in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations feared it would become a communist nation under the leadership of Cheddi Jagan, a Marxist who was very popular among the South Asian (mostly Indian) majority. Although to this day the CIA refuses to confirm or deny involvement, Rabe presents evidence that CIA funding, through a program run by the AFL-CIO, helped foment the labor unrest, race riots, and general chaos that led to Jagan's replacement in 1964. The political leader preferred by the United States, Forbes Burnham, went on to lead a twenty-year dictatorship in which he persecuted the majority Indian population. Considering race, gender, religion, and ethnicity along with traditional approaches to diplomatic history, Rabe's analysis of this Cold War tragedy serves as a needed corrective to interpretations that depict the Cold War as an unsullied U.S. triumph.

Book Beyond the Sociology of Development

Download or read book Beyond the Sociology of Development written by Ivar Oxaal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived as a response to the economic naïvety and implicit metropolitan bias of many 1950s and 60s studies of ‘the sociology of development’ , this volume, first published in 1975, provides actual field studies and theoretical reviews to indicate the directions which a conceptually more adequate study of developing societies should take. Much of the book reflects strongly the influence of Andre Gunder Frank, but the contributors adopt a critical attitude to his ideas, applying them in empirical situations within such African and American countries as Kenya, Guyana, Tanzania and Peru. Others pursue the lines of enquiry opened up by Latin American theories of economic ‘dependency’ and by the new school of French economic anthropology.

Download or read book Guyana written by John Gafar and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to examine the performance of Guyana's economy during the era of dirigisme and the period of economic liberalisation with emphasis on a market economy, using all available micro-and macro-data. In a much broader and meaningful sense, this book deals with the socio-economic progress of Guyana from the 1960s, with heavy emphasis on the market reforms, because this is the dominant and interesting story for policy lessons in the Third World. This book also focuses on what has happened to poverty, inequality, and other social indicators during the reform period. Until now, there has not been any systematic examination of the effects of the economic reforms in Guyana on unemployment, wages and industrial activity; poverty and inequality; farmers' response to price liberalisation; education and health indicators; ethnicity and growth; and governance, crime and corruption. These issues and more are the subject matter of this book. The book refers to those aspects of Guyana's history and recent political events that bear directly on economic policy and the performance of the economic system.

Book Colin Palmer s Trilogy on Imperialism in the Caribbean Omnibus E Book

Download or read book Colin Palmer s Trilogy on Imperialism in the Caribbean Omnibus E Book written by Colin A. Palmer and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 1130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Omnibus E-Book brings together all three of Colin A. Palmer's books on the making of the modern Caribbean. Included are: Freedom's Children: The 1938 Labor Rebellion and the Birth of Modern Jamaica This is the first comprehensive history of Jamaica's watershed 1938 labor rebellion and its aftermath. The rebellion produced two rival leaders who dominated the political life of the colony through the achievement of independence in 1962. Alexander Bustamante, a moneylender, founded the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union and its progeny, the Jamaica Labour Party. Norman Manley, an eminent barrister, led the struggle for self-government and with others established the People's National Party. Palmer sheds new light on the nature of Bustamante's collaboration with the imperial regime, the rise of the trade-union movement, the struggle for constitutional change, and the emergence of party politics in a modernizing Jamaica. Cheddi Jagan and the Politics of Power: British Guiana's Struggle for Independence Palmer here tells the story of British Guiana's struggle for independence. The work details the rise and fall of Cheddi Jagan--from his initial electoral victory in the spring of 1953 to the aftermath of the British-orchestrated coup d'etat that led to the suspension of the constitution and the removal of Jagan's independence-minded administration. Bringing the larger story of Caribbean colonialism into view, this work shows how violence, police corruption, political chicanery, racial politics, and poor leadership delayed Guyana's independence until 1966, scarring the body politic in the process. Eric Williams and the Making of the Modern Caribbean In this first scholarly assessment of Williams (1911-1981), founder of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago's first modern political party and the nation's first prime minister, Palmer explores his life as a scholar and politician and his tremendous influence on the historiography and politics of the Caribbean. Palmer focuses especially on a 14-year period of independence struggles in the Anglophone Caribbean, when Williams helped resolve regional disputes and promoted the creation of a pan-Caribbean federation.

Book The Ethnopolitics of Elections

Download or read book The Ethnopolitics of Elections written by Florian Bieber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume conceptualizes the dynamics underlying electoral politics in ethnically divided societies, providing empirical evidence and analysis of recent elections in such societies on a comparative and single-case basis, including case studies of Macedonia, Slovakia, Belgium, Malaysia, Singapore, Rwanda, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Free and fair elections are one of the most fundamental characteristics of democratic systems. In ethnically divided societies, elections and the rules and regulations on which they are based assume special importance because they provide important levers to guarantee, or prevent, adequate representation of different communal groups in the key institutions of the state. Hence not only are elections contested vigorously, but also the electoral systems according to which they are conducted. This book was previously published as a special issue of Ethnopolitics.

This book was released on 2008-07-29 with total page 1269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative source for information on the people, places, and events of the African Diaspora, spanning five continents and five centuries. The field of African Diaspora studies is rapidly growing. Until now there was no single, authoritative source for information on this broad, complex discipline. Drawing on the work of over 300 scholars, this encyclopedia fills that void. Now the researcher, from high school level up, can go to a single reference for information on the historical, political, economic, and cultural relations between people of African descent and the rest of the world community. Five hundred years of relocation and dislocation, of assimilation and separation have produced a rich tapestry of history and culture into which are woven people, places, and events. This authoritative, accessible work picks out the strands of the tapestry, telling the story of diverse peoples, separated by time and distance, but retaining a commonality of origin and experience. Organized in A–Z sections covering global topics, country of origin, and destination country, the work is designed for easy use by all.
