Book Cogeneration Design Guide

Download or read book Cogeneration Design Guide written by J. A. Orlando and published by American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This design guide offers a thorough discussion of the theoretical as well as the practical aspects of a cogeneration system design. A brief discussion of the legal and regulatory aspects is followed by a detailed discussion of the prime movers (reciprocating engines, combustion turbines and steam turbines), heat recovery and electrical recovery equipment. There are two case studies (a hospital and an industrial application) to help illustrate the entire design process. ASHRAE Research Project 737.

Book Regulating Power The Economics of Electrictiy in the Information Age

Download or read book Regulating Power The Economics of Electrictiy in the Information Age written by Carl Pechman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modem industrial society functions with the expectation that electricity will be available when required. By law, electric utilities have the obligation to provide electricity to customers in a "safe and adequate" manner. In exchange for this obligation, utilities are granted a monopoly right to provide electricity to customers within well-defmed service territories. However, utilities are not unfettered in their monopoly power; public utility commissions regulate the relationship between a utility and its customers and limit profits to a "fair rate of return on invested capital. " From its inception through the late 1970s, the electric utility industry's opera tional paradigm was to continue marketing electricity to customers and to build power plants to meet customer needs. This growth was facilitated by a U. S. energy policy predicated upon the assumption that sustained electric growth was causally linked to social welfare (Lovins, 1977). The electric utility industry is now in transition from a vertically integrated monopoly to a more competitive market. Of the three primary components (generation, transmission, and distribution) of the traditional vertically integrated monopoly, generation is leading this transformation. The desired outcome is a more efficient market for the provision of electric service, ultimately resulting in lower costs to customers. This book focuses on impediments to this transformation. In partiCUlar, it argues that information control is a form of market power that inhibits the evolution of the market. The analysis is presented within the context of the transformation of the U. S.

Book Factors Affecting Industry s Decision to Cogenerate

Download or read book Factors Affecting Industry s Decision to Cogenerate written by Ronald Wayne Hess and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the results of an analysis of the technical and economic factors that influence an industrial manufacturing firm's decision to engage in cogeneration. The study considers the influence of industry characteristics, fuel costs, and government regulations. In general, cogeneration is a financially attractive option. Electrical power from a cogenerating plant can be produced relatively cheaply and in most cases can be made more cheaply than (1) the current median U.S. industrial rate (approximately 50 mills/kWh), and (2) that possible from a new central station steam plant (40+ mills/kWh). Furthermore, the real, after-tax rate of return for all but a very few of the cases analyzed exceeded 10 percent. The study shows that cogeneration is most financially attractive for industrial plants with large process steam requirements that operate 24 hours a day year-round. However, for small industrial plants with lower load factors, the financial attractiveness of cogeneration is heavily influenced by the level of credit available through the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978.

Book Cogeneration

Download or read book Cogeneration written by Christos A. Frangopoulos and published by IET. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, integrated treatment of cogeneration technologies and systems. Also called combined heat and power (CHP), cogeneration is the use of a power station to deliver two or more useful forms of energy (e.g. generating electricity and heat at the same time). All conventional, fuel-based plants generate heat as by-product, which is often wasted. Cogeneration captures part of this heat for delivery to consumers. The book gives a tour of the available cogeneration technologies and their features. It provides plenty of instructive examples of cogeneration projects to illustrate key concepts, and also covers the relevant regulatory and legal frameworks. It is an ideal text/reference for anyone working in power systems and energy engineering. Topics covered include: * Benefits of cogeneration * Cogeneration technologies * Electrical engineering aspects * Applications of cogeneration * Fuels for cogeneration systems * Thermodynamic analysis * Environmental impacts of cogeneration * Reliability and availability * Economic analysis of cogeneration systems * Regulatory and legal frameworks * Selection, integration and operation of cogeneration systems * Simulation and optimisation * Synthesis, design and operation * Examples of cogeneration projects * Research and development of cogeneration * Summary and conclusions
