Book excerpt: Ecoltomic and political background When after five years of war and occupation (May 194o-May 1945) The Netherlands started on the road to recovery, the economy was in a catastrophic condition. As a result of destruction, requisitioning and looting, and of unavoidable expenditures by the Government in exile, the national wealth in terms of real and financial assets had been reduced by about 30 per cent. The productive capacity in industry, agriculture, transportation and infrastructure was heavily damaged, stocks were exhausted and labor productivity was serious ly underminded (the daily food ration had reached the near starvation level of barely 600 calories per person).1 Monetary reserves and foreign investments had suffered heavy losses. The economic and social strategy on which the new post-war Government embarked was directed towards three major objec tives: a) rapid reconstruction of the productive potential; b) equit able distribution of the national income; c) rational utilization of the available economic resources. It was realized that the achieve ment of these objectives was conditioned by austerity with respect to consumption, after a reasonable subsistence level had been restored; by a maximum investment effort; by the re-establish- 1 During the war period, the population had increased by more than 400,000 reaching 9.3 million end-I94S.

Book excerpt: There is relatively little information on The Netherlands written in the English language which is easily accessible to social science students and even less which is systematically assembled between the covers of a single book. This is unfortunate not only because The Netherlands is an important part of Western Europe but because the experience of The Netherlands in the way in which it has attempted to resolve the economic and political problems confronting it may help to shed valuable light on similar issues facing other European countries. The contributions for this volume were chosen with these considerations in mind. On the one hand the selection of topics was intended to provide an overall impression of the political and economic development of The Netherlands since the Second World War. Thus separate chapters are devoted to an examination of economic develop ment; counter-inflation, energy, regional and planning policies; pressure groups, electoral performance, cabinet formation and colonial and Euro pean policies. On the other hand, these areas for investigation were chosen to invite specific contrast with the experience of other European nations or to illustrate certain problems of political or economic theory. It is my pleasure to thank, first of all, the contributors themselves for the conscientious way in which they prepared their drafts which made my task as editor so much easier. Secondly, it will be apparent to even the most casual observer that I have contributed two chapters.

However the development of the Netherlands differed from most European countries. This essay intends to describe the Dutch economy during the 1990 to the millennium. What production of goods is it specialised on and how is this production process organised? Is this economy able to address the needs of the Dutch population or is there even a lack of some goods? The following report tries to find answers to these questions by highlighting specific attributes of the Dutch economy. By describing the development of the past decade it might be possible to give a brief forecast on the Netherlands’ level of prosperity for the forthcoming five years in the end of this essay. The Netherlands are located in the West of Europe. Compared to the rest of the world, the area of the Netherlands is relatively small with only 41 526 km2 , which means it takes ranks no. 132 in the world scale. Nevertheless the inhabitants are relatively numerous with 16.1 million people in 2002. This creates a high population density of 386 inhabitants per km2. As pointed out in the essay this fact creates a good market for the Dutch economy. The neighbours are Belgium in the South and Germany in the East. The North Sea is located on the Northwest coast of the country. The Dutch capital is the Amsterdam, while the seat of the government is located in the city of Den Haag. [...]

The economy is forecast to grow by 4.0 percent in 2021 and 3.3 percent in 2022, on the back of strong consumption and investment, supported by increasing coverage of vaccines. Near-term risks to the outlook are roughly balanced, driven by the uncertain trajectory of the pandemic on the downside, while a fuller than expected drawdown of savings accumulated in the pandemic would further support domestic demand and growth. Supervisory colleges are an important innovation to reinforce home-host coordination for supervisors of large complex financial institutions (LCFIs).

Uncommonly large gross financial assets and liabilities are found in the financial sector, whereas households own significant net financial wealth. The large gross financial assets and liabilities reflect a dominant role of multinational corporations (MNCs). Despite their size, these financial positions have not brought significant financial stability risks to the country. On the other hand, Dutch households’ long balance sheets have been associated with depressed consumption and volatile real estate investment, which has probably exacerbated the cyclicality of the economy. The expected reform of the pension system is likely to change the way household balance sheets interact with private consumption.
