Book Macroeconomic Imbalances Belgium

Download or read book Macroeconomic Imbalances Belgium written by European Commission. Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 14 February 2012, the European Commission presented its first Alert Mechanism Report (AMR) in accordance with the Regulation (EU) No. 1176/2011 on the prevention and correction of macroeconomic imbalances. The AMR serves as an initial screening device to identify Member States that warrant further in depth analysis into whether imbalances exist or risk emerging. According to Article 5 of Regulation No. 1176/2011, these country-specific ?in-depth reviews? should examine the nature, origin and severity of macroeconomic developments in the Member State concerned, which constitute, or could lead to, imbalances. On the basis of this analysis, the Commission concludes whether it considers that an imbalance exists or not, and if so whether it is excessive or not, and what type of follow-up it will recommend to the Council to address to the Member State. This in-depth review concludes that Belgium is experiencing macroeconomic imbalances, which are not excessive but need to be addressed. In particular, macroeconomic developments in the areas of external competitiveness of goods and indebtedness, especially concerning the high level of public debt, deserve further attention so as to reduce the risk of adverse effects on the functioning of the economy.

Book The Belgian Economy in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Belgian Economy in the Twentieth Century written by André Mommen and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the nineteenth century Belgium was enjoying considerable economic success. However, the economic experience has proved significantly less stable in the twentieth century. The Belgian Economy in the Twentieth Century offers a detailed study of one of the small economies constituting the Benelux group. Professor Andre Mommen describes and analyses the changing fortunes of the Belgian economy throughout this century. He traces the Belgian experience from the state regulation of the interwar period to its current difficulties. Central to the discussion is the innate problem of Belgian dependence on international trade due to the country's small domestic market. Professor Mommen places this examination within its political context by confronting the problems which have arisen since the first oil crisis and the effect they have had on Belgian politics and society. This volume explains how a small but industrialized European nation succeeded in preserving its competitiveness only to succumb to a devastating debt crisis in the last decade. The Belgian experience as discussed in The Belgian Economy in the Twentieth Century perfectly illustrates the volatility of European economic trends this century.

Book Economic Growth in Europe Since 1945

Download or read book Economic Growth in Europe Since 1945 written by N. F. R. Crafts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-04-18 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling volume re-examines the topic of economic growth in Europe after the Second World War. The contributors approach the subject armed not only with new theoretical ideas, but also with the experience of the 1980s on which to draw. The analysis is based on both applied economics and on economic history. Thus, while the volume is greatly informed by insights from growth theory, emphasis is given to the presentation of chronological and institutional detail. The case study approach and the adoption of a longer-run perspective than is normal for economists allow new insights to be obtained. As well as including chapters that consider the experience of individual European countries, the book explores general European institutional arrangements and historical circumstances. The result is a genuinely comparative picture of post-war growth, with insights that do not emerge from standard cross-section regressions based on the post-1960 period.

The moderate recovery experienced by Belgium in 1994 slowed in the course of 1995 as foreign demand faltered, and GDP growth for 1995 as a whole is now estimated at 2 percent. Domestic demand was supported by increased investment, but private consumption growth remained anemic as real disposable household income grew little. Since early 1994, the Belgian franc has generally been slightly appreciated relative to its central parity against the deutsche mark.

This book offers a closer look at the evolution of public finance in Belgium over the decade 2000-2010. It covers Belgium's macro-economic environment, its budgetary policy, changes to the tax system and social security, the evolution of public expenditure, debt management, and fiscal federalism.
