While organizations play a major role in causing and potentially controlling ecological problems, they could also obtain various benefits. Environmental management accounting (EMA) helps firms to work to attain those potential benefits and to face their environmental responsibilities. As part of EMA, eco-control is the application of financial and strategic control methods to environmental management. In this study, we examine specifically the influence of three eco-control systems within manufacturing firms, namely performance measurement systems (PMS), budgeting and incentives. More specifically, we investigate to what extent those eco-control systems influence environmental and organizational performance? This study is motivated by two main purposes: (i) the lack of attention devoted to eco-control in the accounting literature, and (ii) the lack of empirical studies examining the relationship among EMA, environmental and organizational performance. Using survey-data from a sample of Canadian manufacturing firms, the results suggest that the three eco-control systems influence positively environmental performance which in turn influences positively organizational performance. This study contributes to the management accounting literature by providing insight into the roles and contributions of management accounting in a context of sustainable development.
