This book was released on 2002 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scott, James Brown. Judicial Settlement of Controversies between States of the American Union: An Analysis of Cases Decided in the Supreme Court of the United States. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1919. xiii, 548 pp. Reprinted 2002 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 00-066333. ISBN 1-58477-172-0. Cloth. $120. * This volume offers the texts of eighty Supreme Court decisions written between 1799 and 1918 concerning controversies between states, along with extensive analyses and commentaries. These are preceded by three general chapters that examine the rise of judicial procedure between the states, the ability of states to be sued by citizens of other states, and attempts by citizens of states to bring action against other states by methods of indirection. As indicated by the final chapter, "A Lesson For the World at Large," the author has a larger goal in mind. Deeply influenced by the devastation of the First World War, Scott [1866-1943], a participant in the Versailles Conference, aimed to demonstrate that the American legal system that maintains peace between the individual states could serve as a model for the rest of the world.

Book excerpt: "The last great work of the age of reason, the final instance when all human knowledge could be presented with a single point of view ... Unabashed optimism, and unabashed racism, pervades many entries in the 11th, and provide its defining characteristics ... Despite its occasional ugliness, the reputation of the 11th persists today because of the staggering depth of knowledge contained with its volumes. It is especially strong in its biographical entries. These delve deeply into the history of men and women prominent in their eras who have since been largely forgotten - except by the historians, scholars"-- The Guardian, https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2012/apr/10/encyclopedia-britannica-11th-edition.

Download or read book The 1947 Partition in The East written by Subhasri Ghosh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the experiences of people affected by the Partition of British India and princely states in 1947 through first-person accounts, memoirs, archival material, literature, and cinema. It focuses on the displacement, violence and trauma of the people affected and interrogates the interrelationships between nationalism, temporality, religion, and citizenship. The authors examine the mass migrations triggered by the 1947 Partition, amidst nationalist posturing, religious violence, and debates on crucial issues of refugee rehabilitation and redistribution of land and resources. It focuses on the drawing of the borders and the ruptures in the socio-cultural bonds within regions and communities brought on by demographic changes, violence, and displacement. The volume reflects on the significant mark left by the event on the socio-political sensibilities of various communities, and the questions of identity and citizenship. It also studies the effects of Partition on the politics of Bangladesh and India’s east and northeast states, specifically Bengal, Assam and Tripura. A significant addition to the existing corpus on Partition historiography, this book will be of interest to modern Indian history, partition studies, border studies, sociology, refugee and migration studies, cultural studies, literature, post-colonial studies and South Asian studies, particularly those concerned with Bengal, Northeast India and Bangladesh.

Download or read book Contested Waters written by Amit Ranjan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines India’s transboundary river water disputes with its South Asian riparian neighbours — Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. It explores the history of disputes and cooperation over the transboundary river water in this region as well as discusses current disputes and future concerns. It analyses how and why existing transboundary river water sharing treaties between India and its South Asian riparian neighbours are confronted with challenges. The book indicates that India’s transboundary river water disputes with its South Asian riparian neighbours are likely to escalate in coming years due to the widening of the demand¬–supply gap in the respective countries. It further shows the impact of bilateral relations on the resolution of transboundary river water disputes, even as cordial relationships do not always guarantee the absence of river water disputes between riparian states. The book looks at some key questions: How political are India’s transboundary rivers water disputes in South Asia? Why do the roots of India’s river water disputes with Bangladesh and Pakistan lie in the partition of the British India in 1947? Why are there reservations against India’s hydroelectricity projects or allegations of water theft? Is it possible to resolve transboundary river water disputes among these South Asian countries? This book will greatly interest scholars and researchers working in the areas of river management, environmental politics, transnationalism, water resources, politics and international relations, security studies, peace and conflict studies, geopolitics, development studies, governance and public administration, and South Asian studies in addition to policymakers and journalists.
