This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Story of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Victoria This volume is a contribution to the history of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Victoria. The authors, years ago, saw the importance of preserving documents and records, which would give authentic data concerning the early times of this Church. In the year 1881, the Victoria and Tasmania Conference directed them to collect such materials, and this request was repeated by the General Conference of the Australasian Wesleyan Methodist Church. That trust has been considered a positive and sacred duty by them, and they have fulfilled it with some success, having been largely aided by numerous friends and Circuit authorities, who possessed such records. They sought also to obtain oral or written statements from such of the early pioneers who survive to the present time, and they are greatly indebted for such information kindly given by the Revs. W. Butters, J. Harcourt, J. C. Symons, M. Dyson, and Messrs. Witton, Beaver, Stone, the Tuckfield family, Mrs. Caldwell (formerly Mrs. Hurst), and many others. Their obligation is greatest of all to the representatives of the late Rev. Joseph Orton, for the loan of his manuscript journals, which are full of important materials relating to the founding of Methodism in South Australia and Victoria. Book The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society Vol 1 of 5 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Vol. 1 of 5 The Centenary History of the Wesleyan Missionary Society was projected as an integral part of the celebrations of 1913, and the work of abstracting reports and manuscripts was entrusted to the Rev. W. C. Bourne. A considerable amount of preparatory work was thus accomplished. The work then passed into the hands of the Rev. G. G. Findlay, D.D., at that time the Professor of New Testament Language and Literature in the Headingley College. This appointment at once met with hearty and universal approval. Dr. Findlay brought to the work not only the trained mind and finished style of the scholar, but also a sympathy with foreign missionary work, and a comprehensive outlook upon the whole range of Church activities, such as commanded the reverent admiration of all. His capacity for research, his appreciation of the value of detail, and his grasp of the whole, indicated an ideal historian, and the depth of his personal devotion ensured that the work of recording the sacrifice and service of faith would be worthily accomplished. He gave himself up to the work with whole-hearted enthusiasm, assisted by his talented daughter, who had herself served as a Missionary in India. The work of examining and collating the manuscript records which contained the earliest history of the Missionary Society was enough to baffle most men, but Dr. Findlay's industry and skill were equal to the task, and his work in this particular alone will remain not the least of many monuments by which he will be remembered. But the thoroughness and completeness of his method became a difficulty, and it soon became apparent that the History would not be ready for publication in the Centenary year. At the same time it was felt - and by none more strongly than by Dr. Findlay - that the Wesleyan Church possessed in these records a wealth of which it was scarcely aware. Book History of the Wesleyan Academy

Download or read book History of the Wesleyan Academy written by David Sherman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Wesleyan Academy: At Wilbraham, Mass;; 1817-1890 To those interested in the work of education, this volume will prove valuable, as containing the record of early struggles in building a literary institution. The founding was a work of faith. The preachers of the New England Conference made a great venture. Like the patriarch, they marched into a strange land they were to possess only after many days of toil and trial. The history shows the ultimate realization of their highest expectations. As the first successful experiment of the Methodists in American education, the enterprise has an interest for all the disciples of Wesley. At Wilbraham, after many defeats and hindrances, the leaders made a stand and turned the tide of battle in favor of higher education by the church. From the day Fisk planted his foot on the soil, the work prospered and progressed. A new spirit entered the denomination, and Christian schools began to spring up, under Methodist auspices, in every part of the land. Let none of the later schools forget how much they owe to this earliest and honored institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society Vol 2 of 5 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Vol. 2 of 5 The second volume of this History is wholly devoted to missionary service in the West India Islands. It contains the record of a work as full of courage and devotion, as instinct with true romance, as any that we Shall find in the several fields in which the people called Methodists have given their contribution to the message of the Christian Church. If in these latter days this field has seemed to lack the attractiveness of its earlier days, and the joy of abundant harvest which once it knew, there is all the more need that the fascinating story of its past should be fully set forth. It is well known that the gifted scholar whose work is here given to the world so felt the charm of this field that he said that if he were beginning his ministry, and were called to Choose a field of service, he would offer to serve in the West Indies. That charm remains and though dark and cloudy skies have gathered over this Mission Field, we cannot doubt that the seed sown with such unstinting hands and with hearts so lavish of their love will yet appear in a Church worthy of its history to the praise and glory of God. Book The Constitution and Polity of the Wesleyan Methodist Church

Download or read book The Constitution and Polity of the Wesleyan Methodist Church written by David J. Waller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitution and Polity of the Wesleyan Methodist Church: On the Plan of the Work by the Late Henry W. Williams, D. D. A New and Enlarged Edition, Brought Down to the Conference of 1898 At the request of the Wesleyan Methodist Book Committee, the responsible duty was undertaken by me of preparing a new edition of the Constitution and Polity of Wesleyan Methodism. The original design of the work was to present a clear, concise, and complete statement of the Economy of Wesleyan Methodism in the stage of development which it had then reached. The task was executed with distinguished ability by the late Rev. Henry W. Williams, D.D. The volume proved of great service, not only to Ministers and Office-bearers, but also to private Members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. It passed through several editions, the last being published in the year 1882. The book - now out of print - is still in demand, but it was essential that any future edition should include the legislation of succeeding Conferences. Since 1882 a great deal of new and important legislation has been enacted, and the Resolutions of the Conference adopted in successive years have modified, and in some instances superseded, the preceding Regulations. The present volume has been prepared on the excellent plan adopted by Dr. Williams, but it has been almost entirely rewritten, and consists of nearly twice the number of pages.
