The first article, upon The Early Reniaissance, was originally delivered as an introductory address before the Yale School of Fine Arts; and the occasional nature of all these essays, not being academic class-lectures or having a strictly technical, and therefore perhaps more popular character, have led me to put them in book form. There has been a marked awakening of interest in things pertaining to art and its literature, not only among the more highly cultivated class but among professional and practical men; and the hope of meeting this demand in some slight way, has also influenced me.
