Book excerpt: The important Early Bronze Age site of Bab edh-Dhra, on the lisan near the Dead Sea in Jordan, was first excavated by Paul W. Lapp in the 1960s. The first volume of the Reports of the Expedition described the burial practices and artifacts revealed in the 1965-67 Bab edh-Dhra excavations directed by Lapp. This second volume reports on the four seasons of excavation, from 1975 to 1981, at the town site, directed by Walter E. Rast and R. Thomas Schaub. The stratigraphy and changing architectural practices of five major phases are fully documented and interpreted, with extensive plans and sections.

Book The Dawn of the Bronze Age

Download or read book The Dawn of the Bronze Age written by Shay Bar and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Dawn of the Bronze Age Shay Bar presents a detailed account of the pattern of settlement during the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age I periods (mid-Fifth to late Fourth Millennia BCE), in one of the least explored areas of the southern Levant – the lower Jordan valley and the desert fringes of the Samaria mountains. More than 120 surveyed sites and five excavation reports form an essential database for every scholar interested in the archaeology of the Near East in these periods. "Bar has accomplished an impressive task and has provided valuable new information on this important region that forms the transition between the central hill country and the eastern side of the Jordan River." Eva Kaptijn, Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Bibliotheca Orientalis LXXIV n° 1-2 (2017)

Book Social Inequality in the Early Bronze Age at Bab Edh Dhra Jordan

Download or read book Social Inequality in the Early Bronze Age at Bab Edh Dhra Jordan written by Natalie Patience and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bab edh-Dhra is the most extensively excavated cemetery from Early Bronze Age, Jordan. Despite thorough study, the social structure and existence of social inequality remain unclear. This was addressed using osteological evidence of physiological stress to compare between family tombs. In societies exhibiting social inequality, individuals of lower status experience higher levels of stress. Evidence of physiological stress (femoral length, LEH, metabolic disorders, periosteal reactions, cribra orbitalia, and porotic hyperostosis) was recorded using standard methods for 250 adults. The artifact counts in this study have been previously published. Differences in the frequency of stress indicators were compared using chi-square tests. The results show no difference in the frequency of stress indicators between tombs and no correlation between artifacts and frequency of stress indicators. This indicates that families at Bab edh-Dhra experienced similar stress levels and low inequality. This may be due to cultural practices, subsistence methods or lack of data.

Book excerpt: This volume presents Paul W. Lapp's excavations at Bab edh-Dhra between 1965-1967, which concentrated on the cemetery of the site. This focus on the cemetery material has had the result that many came to associate Bab edh-Dhra with its tombs. Yet it is important in this volume on tomb material to stress that the latter is only one set of evidence at the site and that the cemetery remains need to be considered in relation to the data from the town site. The Bab edh-Dhra town site excavations are covered in volume 2 of this series "Reports of the Expedition to the Dead Sea Plain, Jordan."

Book The Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Ages of Central Transjordan

Download or read book The Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Ages of Central Transjordan written by Patrick E. McGovern and published by UPenn Museum of Archaeology. This book was released on 1986 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical transition period in the archaeology and history of Palestine—the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age—is described in detail from the perspective of a group of sites in the Baq'ah Valley. A major emphasis is on how scientific techniques, including magnetic location of undisturbed burial deposits and analytical reconstruction of very early industries, can be effectively integrated into an archaeological project. Contrary to traditional views, the evidence supports a relatively peaceful development within a single cultural tradition rather than the intrusion of a new people or segment of the existing population, by invasion, migration, or revolt. Book B b Edh Dhr Text

Download or read book B b Edh Dhr Text written by Walter E. Rast and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This final report on excavations at the town site at Bab edh-Dhra contains the results of the expedition to the Dead Sea between 1975 and 1981. The central objective of the expedition was to bring the Early Bronze Age occupation of the southeast Dead Sea Plain in Jordan to life by excavation, survey, and multidisciplinary exploration. As the largest Early Bronze Age site in the southern Ghor, Bab edh-Dhra was the focus because the site's size and much longer history attest to the fact that the peoples at this particular location spearheaded the occupation of the region from the latter part of the fourth to the end of the third millennium B.C."--Preface.

Book A Late Bronze to Early Iron Age Tomb at Sa em Jordan

Download or read book A Late Bronze to Early Iron Age Tomb at Sa em Jordan written by Peter M. Fischer and published by Otto Harrassowitz. This book was released on 1997 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992 a rich tomb dating from the Late Bronze to the Early Iron Age period was discovered in the village of Sahem in the north-west of Jordan. The burial gifts contain more than 200 items of fired clay, stone and metal including objects of bronze, silver and gold. Clay vessels, figurines of clay and stone, scarabs of composite, carnelian and rock crystal, daggers and other bronze tools, jewellery and toggle pins are amongst the objects. The objects are both locally made, including imitations of clay objects of foreign origin, and imports. The aims of this study include attempts to date the burial gifts, to group obviously contemporaneous items in order to establish a phasing, and to draw some conclusions about the society to which the tombbelongs. The goods reflect the life of a prosperous society, whose wealth was based on agriculture. The evidence of trade with Egypt, the Mycenaean world and Syria is indicated. Religious activities and burial customs are mirrored by figurines depicting areligious amalgamation of the Egyptian goddess, Hathor, and the Canaanite goddesses Ashera / Astarte / Anat.

Book Life and Death in the Bronze Age

Download or read book Life and Death in the Bronze Age written by Cyril Fox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a great work by one of the pioneers of modern archaeology. The period covered is from 1700 to 700 B.C. and is mainly concerned with the author’s field work in western Britain. It deals with burial ritual – dances, processions, "houses of the dead", the objects deposited, the building of the barrow; and it shows by line drawings and photographs how scientific excavation nowadays is planned and executed. The book gathers together an immense amount of research completed over a long span of years on burials and the ceremonial which attended them. Originally published in 1959.

Book The Middle Bronze Age IIA Cemetery at Gesher

Download or read book The Middle Bronze Age IIA Cemetery at Gesher written by Yosef Garfinkel and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 164 b/w figures and 18 tables. Gesher is a small Middle Bronze Age IIA cemetery site located in the central Jordan Valley in Israel. Initial excavations in 1986-1987 indicated the site's importance for examining population and settlement in the interior of Canaan in the early second millennium BCE. In particular, the nature of the interments and the early date of the site's material culture highlighted the importance of Gesher for studies of MB IIA development. Three additional seasons of excavations were conducted from 2002-2004, which were designed to gain further data regarding the mortuary customs, material culture, and social and economic developments of this population in MB IIA Canaan. During the five seasons of excavation, a total of 23 interments were excavated in the cemetery, together with their associated grave goods, consisting of ceramic vessels, bronze weapons, and one bronze toggle pin. This final report presents the burials and material culture from the cemetery and compares the data with other Middle Bronze Age sites in Canaan. It contributes valuable information regarding Canaanite mortuary customs and increases the corpus of material culture dating to early MB IIA. The burials and material culture from the Gesher cemetery date to the earliest phases of the MB IIA, while also preserving traditions and forms of the preceding EB IV/MB I period in Palestine. As such, Gesher provides a window into the transitional period between EB IV/MB I and MB IIA which is rarely attested at other sites, to date, and thus has significant implications for knowledge concerning this cultural era in Canaan.
