Book The Dynamics of Non spherical Particles 1 Controlled Generation of Non spherical Aerosols and Methods for Their Size Concentration and Electric Charge Measurement

Download or read book The Dynamics of Non spherical Particles 1 Controlled Generation of Non spherical Aerosols and Methods for Their Size Concentration and Electric Charge Measurement written by Isaiah Gallily and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The typical features of the motion of a nonspherical aerosol particle are discussed, an overall aim concerning its behavior in systems of importance for human environment is stated and a preliminary objective of studying methods for generation, size measurement, determination of concentration and assessment of electric charge is set. Previous investigations in these lines are reviewed. Starting with model shapes, there were produced by solution spray-drying almost perfect cubes or parallelpipeds and, by suspension gas atomization, cylindrical particles of glass fibers. Dispersion of powders by air turbulence was treated theoretically and a computational investigation of the adhesional energy between two parallelpipeds at various mutual orientations begun. The size parameters of the produced particles were determined. A way of assessing the electric charge of a nonspherical particle is analyzed in view of the specificity of its motion and the relation to the principal translational resistances brought out. The effect of Brownian rotation on the translation of an aerosol particle was discussed. An apparatus for the determination of the principal resistances of a nonspherical particle at various Knudsen numbers has been constructed and a mathematical procedure for the elucidation of results developed.

Book The Dynamics of Non Spherical Particles

Download or read book The Dynamics of Non Spherical Particles written by Isaiah Gallily and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the aerodynamic translational mobility of nonsphericals was experimentally determined for Knudsen numbers of up to 0.2. The particles were glass cylinders, which represent asbestos fibers and ice needles, and cubes, which represent the primary constituents of metal oxide aggregates. The method of determination and the apparatus used were based on a stereophotography of the trajectories of the particles in still air and a photogrammetric measurement of the (three) dimensions of the particles in a scanning electron microscope. The results for cylinders, compared with continuous fluid theoretical values of the coefficients, show a reasonable correspondence with expectation which even improved when the blunt edge effect of the particles was taken into consideration. However, in the case of cylinders having diameters above 1 micrometers, the experimentally determined coefficients were higher by about 50% than the continuous fluid calculated ones, whereas in the case of cylinders of diameters less than 0.5 micrometers, the determined coefficients were smaller than the calculated values. The resistance coefficients of cubes showed similar tendencies. The deposition of cylindrical particles in still air was studied in a specially constructed sedimentation cell; in this cell, a method for the size distribution analysis of these particles was tried.

Book The Dynamics of Non Spherical Particles Part II Mobility in Non Orienting Fields

Download or read book The Dynamics of Non Spherical Particles Part II Mobility in Non Orienting Fields written by Isaiah Gallily and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the stochastic nature of the mobility of aerosol particles in non-orienting fields of force. A dynamic model for the interaction between particles' translation and Brownian rotation was assumed and a Monte Carlo method applied to compute the distribution of particles' (verticle) trajectories. The distribution was calculated for several particle shapes, various geometric dimensions, various total times of motion, and various initial orientations. From the calculations it was seen that the aerodynamic diameter is actually a statistical parameter, which should be taken into account. On the experimental side, the principal translational coefficients of cylindrical glass fibers was determined with the aid of a special apparatus and technique. Fibers' dimensions were found according to a previously developed photogrammetric method, employing a scanning electron microscope.

Book excerpt: AEROSOL SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS Aerosols influence many areas of our daily life. They are at the core of environmental problems such as global warming, photochemical smog and poor air quality. They can also have diverse effects on human health, where exposure occurs in both outdoor and indoor environments. However, aerosols can have beneficial effects too; the delivery of drugs to the lungs, the delivery of fuels for combustion and the production of nanomaterials all rely on aerosols. Advances in particle measurement technologies have made it possible to take advantage of rapid changes in both particle size and concentration. Likewise, aerosols can now be produced in a controlled fashion. Reviewing many technological applications together with the current scientific status of aerosol modelling and measurements, this book includes: Satellite aerosol remote sensing The effects of aerosols on climate change Air pollution and health Pharmaceutical aerosols and pulmonary drug delivery Bioaerosols and hospital infections Particle emissions from vehicles The safety of emerging nanomaterials Radioactive aerosols: tracers of atmospheric processes With the importance of this topic brought to the public's attention after the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull, this book provides a timely, concise and accessible overview of the many facets of aerosol science.

Book Real time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms

Download or read book Real time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms written by Babin, Marcel and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.
