Book excerpt: A passage from the book... It is not often that you see a man tear his hair, but this is exactly what Rashleigh Allerton did. He tore it, first, because of being under the stress of great agitation, and second, because he had it to tear-a thick, black shock with a tendency to part in the middle, but brushed carefully to one side. Seated on the extreme edge of one of Miss Walbrook's strong, slender armchairs, his elbows on his knees, he dug his fingers into the dark mass with every fresh taunt from his fiancée.She was standing over him, high-tempered, imperious. "So it's come to this," she said, with decision; "you've got to choose between a stupid, vulgar lot of men, and me."He gritted his teeth. "Do you expect me to give up all my friends?""All your friends! That's another matter. I'm speaking of half a dozen profligates, of whom you seem determined-I must say it, Rash; you force me to it-of whom you seem determined to be one."He jumped to his feet, a slim, good-looking, well-dressed figure in spite of the tumbled effect imparted by excitement. "But, good heavens, Barbara, what have I been doing?"4"I don't pretend to follow you there. I only know the condition in which you came here from the club last night."He was honestly bewildered. "Came here from the club last night? Why-why, I wasn't so bad."

Chola is a young and innocent woman, born and raised in ultra-conservative, Catholic South America. Hans is a recent immigrant, the handsome son of a wealthy Jewish family from Berlin. Chola doesn't speak a word of German and Hans doesn't speak a word of Spanish. Yet there is a strong attraction that quickly brings them together in marriage. Chola's dreams of happiness are quickly shattered as she finds herself the timid servant to a man she hardly knows and shares neither a common culture or language. Also, Hans refuses to shed the playboy lifestyle he had in the free-spirited Berlin, even for his new bride. Just as young Chola grapples with this dramatic and disappointing change in her life, she faces a new challenge, as Hans' family flees Nazi Germany and heads to South America to live with them. Hans' infidelities and obsession with gambling force Chola to take measures into her own hands as she continues to raise her daughters not to repeat her own mistakes. Even in the face of the ultimate betrayal, she digs in and finds another reason to keep fighting for a better life.

Book excerpt: William Benjamin Basil King (1859-1928) was a Canadian-born clergyman. His novels and non-fiction were spiritually oriented. King graduated from the University of King's College in Nova Scotia, and served as an Episcopal rector at St. Luke's Pro- Cathedral in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and later at Christ Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He retired from the clergy in 1900 due to illness, and began writing. His anonymously published novel The Inner Shrine, about a French Irish girl whose husband is killed in a duel, became very popular when published in 1909. The Conquest of Fear (1921) portrayed his own struggle with ill health and eventual spiritual growth, and lays out his somewhat mystical approach to religious understanding. Among his other works are: Wild Olive (1910), The Street Called Straight (1912), and The Letter of the Contract (1914).
