Book The Durable Use of Consumer Products

Download or read book The Durable Use of Consumer Products written by Michel Kostecki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we need a new car or a new refrigerator every ten years? What happens to our PC which is exchanged for a new model every three years? Why do our shoes last only a year or so, while those of our great grandfather served for a genera tion? Are businesses deliberately marketing products in a way which encourages sub-optimal use and induces consumers to buy new products? More and more consumers respond ''yes'' objecting to the business practices which reduce the life span of a product or pay no attention to efficiency in con sumption. The growing concem with sub-optimal use of consumer durables arises as a response to the volume of waste, as wen as to the growing conviction that over-consumption is encouraged by marketing techniques and approaches that favor lesser durability and sub-optimal use. There are signs that those things will have to change. Firstly, client orientation - a condition sine qua non of marketing success in the saturated markets of rich countries - is gaining popularity. Consumers are better informed and more influential and "intelligent consumption" is on the rise. Buyers are becoming more and more hostile towards marketing manipulation, inducing them to consume faster, more and at higher prices. The public increas ingly resists messages in advertisements (preventive resistance) which are pre dominantly persuasive (rather than educational or informative) and conceived to stimulate demand for the "new", the superficial and the fashionable.

Book The Measurement of Durable Goods Prices

Download or read book The Measurement of Durable Goods Prices written by Robert J. Gordon and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American business has recently been under fire, charged with inflated pricing and an inability to compete in the international marketplace. However, the evidence presented in this volume shows that the business community has been unfairly maligned—official measures of inflation and the standard of living have failed to account for progress in the quality of business equipment and consumer goods. Businesses have actually achieved higher productivity at lower prices, and new goods are lighter, faster, more energy efficient, and more reliable than their predecessors. Robert J. Gordon has written the first full-scale work to treat the extent of quality changes over the entire range of durable goods, from autos to aircraft, computers to compressors, from televisions to tractors. He combines and extends existing methods of measurement, drawing data from industry sources, Consumer Reports, and the venerable Sears catalog. Beyond his important finding that the American economy is more sound than officially recognized, Gordon provides a wealth of anecdotes tracing the postwar history of technological progress. Bolstering his argument that improved quality must be accurately measured, Gordon notes, for example, that today's mid-range personal computers outperform the multimillion-dollar mainframes of the 1970s. This remarkable book will be essential reading for economists and those in the business community.

Book Environmental Information in Instructions for Use of Consumer Products

Download or read book Environmental Information in Instructions for Use of Consumer Products written by Ari Nissinen and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2005-03-11 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union has highlighted the issue of environmentally sound use of products in the context of Integrated Product Policy, IPP. Accordingly, consumers should have easy access to understandable, relevant and credible environmental information. Information about product characteristics is available in different forms and sources, but in many cases, relevant environmental information is not available on the product itself. The study described in this report was initiated in order to produce information on the state of user instructions regarding environmental information. User manuals of passenger cars and refrigerators were focused on, examining the advice which could diminish the harmful environmental effects of the use of these products. Other studied products included such durable products as textiles and furniture as well as such consumables as cleaning chemicals and recyclable paper products. The study raised many ideas about actions that could promote the status and 'eco-development' of instructions for use.

Book Longer Lasting Products

Download or read book Longer Lasting Products written by Dr Tim Cooper and published by Gower Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present economic system requires us to consume and throw away more and more goods. Yet often it's our desire, and the best interests of the environment, for these goods to last. The contributors to this book, who comprise many of the most significant international thinkers in the field, explore how longer lasting products could offer enhanced value while reducing environmental impacts. If we created fewer but better quality products, looked after them carefully and invested more in repair, renovation and upgrading, would this direct our economy onto a more sustainable course? The solution sounds simple, yet it requires a seismic shift in how we think, whether as producers or consumers, and our voracious appetite for novelty. The complex range of issues associated with product life-spans demands a multidisciplinary approach. The book covers historical context, design, engineering, marketing, law, government policy, consumer behaviour and systems of provision. It addresses the whole range of consumer durables – vehicles, kitchen appliances, audio-visual equipment and other domestic products, furniture and floor coverings, hardware, garden tools, clothing, household textiles, recreational goods and DIY goods – as well as the re-use of packaging. Longer Lasting Products provides policy makers, those involved in product design, manufacturing and marketing, and all of us as consumers, with clear and compelling guidance as to how we can move away from a throwaway culture towards an economy sustained by more durable goods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaking water infrastructures, heritage tourism, investments in artworks, failing electronics: Durability lies at the heart of a wide range of seemingly unrelated phenomena. In today's economies, which rest on ever-larger stocks of infrastructures, buildings, machinery and household goods, durable things are both a hugely significant source of wealth and a constant source of struggle. The contributors argue that a deeper engagement with durability is essential for reaching an understanding of how economies work; and for envisaging alternative economies built on principles of environmental stewardship and social justice. Placing durability at the core of economic analysis, this volume explores the work and tensions involved in the production and valuation of durability to outline a new agenda for more sustainable economies.

Download or read book Consumer Durables written by Chanduji Thakor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumer goods like washing machines, motorcars, TV sets, audio-video systems etc, which yield services or utility over time rather than being completely used up at the moment of consumption can be termed as the consumer durables. Most consumer goods are durables to some degree, and the term is often used in a more restricted sense to denote relatively expensive, technologically sophisticated goods 'consumer durables' such as the examples given above which implies high involvement at the time of purchase. In the future, earnings will be driven by rising demand for consumer durables in general. As per the National Sample Survey Organization report of "Use of durable goods by Indian households," the per capita total expenditure on durable goods increased from Rs112.89 in 1987-88 to Rs148.02 in 1993-94. Similarly, NCAER estimates point to the fact that the number of households with monthly incomes above Rs 10,000 in metros and Rs 5,000 in non-metros is expected to rise from 22.7 million in 1995-96 to a huge 57.2 million in 2005-06. This will mean that firstly, there will be a perceptible shift towards branded products and secondly, the level of aspiration buying will increase.
