Book Build Like An Ant How My Mom Helped Me Become Valedictorian

Download or read book Build Like An Ant How My Mom Helped Me Become Valedictorian written by DJ Chung and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DJ Chung gives you his mother's stories and lessons that helped him become valedictorian of a large, competitive public high school and gain entry into Duke University. These lessons will provide you with a roadmap on how to gain the essential skills necessary to realize the ultimate goal of becoming valedictorian. Build Like an Ant will show you how a devoted mother's wisdom can help you reach high goals during the ever increasingly competitive, stressful and pressure-filled time called, high school. To Anyone With A Dream, Becoming valedictorian was about more than just being the head of my class. It was about setting a huge goal for myself and committing to achieving it. Without my mother, I don't know that I would have had the ambition to dream so big or the confidence to go for it. Thanks to Mama Chung, I have learned that any goal is achievable as long as you know how to approach it and have the right attitude. I've realized how lucky I am to have a mother who supports and encourages me. I've realized too that her stories are relevant to many people and the lessons can be applied to any goal. That's why I wrote this book. Mama Chung's sayings are just too good to go unrecorded! From "build like an ant" to "keep adding tools to your toolbox" to "don't just stand in the kitchen," my mother always knows the right thing to say to get me thinking and to get me moving. I hope that reading my book inspires you to achieve your goals and gives you the tools you need to succeed. Best of luck to you ... and don't forget to tell your mom "thanks!" -DJ Chung

Book excerpt: Armed with speakers, turntables, light systems, and records, Filipino American mobile DJ crews, such as Ultimate Creations, Spintronix, and Images, Inc., rocked dance floors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. In Legions of Boom noted music and pop culture writer and scholar Oliver Wang chronicles this remarkable scene that eventually became the cradle for turntablism. These crews, which were instrumental in helping to create and unify the Bay Area's Filipino American community, gave young men opportunities to assert their masculinity and gain social status. While crews regularly spun records for school dances, weddings, birthdays, or garage parties, the scene's centerpieces were showcases—or multi-crew performances—which drew crowds of hundreds, or even thousands. By the mid-1990s the scene was in decline, as single DJs became popular, recruitment to crews fell off, and aspiring scratch DJs branched off into their own scene. As the training ground for a generation of DJs, including DJ Q-Bert, Shortkut, and Mix Master Mike, the mobile scene left an indelible mark on its community that eventually grew to have a global impact.

Book excerpt: No Sleepis a visual history of the halcyon days of New York City club life as told through flyer art. Spanning the late 80s through the late 90s, when nightlife buzz travelled via flyers and word of mouth,No Sleepfeatures a collection of artwork from the personal archives of NYC DJs, promoters, club kids, nightlife impresarios, and the artists themselves. Club flyers, by design, were ephemeral objects distributed on street corners, outside of nightclubs and concert halls, in barbershops and retail shops, and were not intended to be preserved for posterity. Through the 90s, they became both increasingly prevalent and more sophisticated as printing technology evolved. Overnight, however, with the advent of the internet, theflyer essentially disappeared, despite it being common at one time for promoters to print thousands of flyers for any given event. Recently, these flyers have become sought-after collector's items.

Book User Interfaces for All

Download or read book User Interfaces for All written by Constantine Stephanidis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-30 with total page 863 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: User Interfaces for All is the first book dedicated to the issues of Universal Design and Universal Access in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Universal Design (or Design for All) is an inclusive and proactive approach seeking to accommodate diversity in the users and usage contexts of interactive products, applications, and services, starting from the design phase of the development life cycle. The ongoing paradigm shift toward a knowledge-intensive information society is already bringing about radical changes in the way people work and interact with each other and with information. The requirement for Universal Design stems from the growing impact of the fusion of the emerging technologies, and from the different dimensions of diversity, which are intrinsic to the information society. This book unfolds the various aspects of this ongoing evolution from a variety of viewpoints. It's a collection of 30 chapters written by leading international authorities, affiliated with academic, research, and industrial organizations, and non-market institutions. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the field, and includes contributions from a variety of theoretical and applied disciplines and research themes. This book can also be used for teaching purposes in HCI courses at the undergraduate as well as graduate level. Students will be introduced to the human-, organizational-, and technology-oriented dimensions that call for a departure from traditional approaches to user interface development. Students will also get an overview of novel methods, techniques, tools, and frameworks for the design, implementation, and evaluation of user interfaces that are universally accessible and usable by the broadest possible end-user population. This comprehensive book is targeted to a broad readership, including HCI researchers, user interface designers, computer scientists, software engineers, ergonomists and usability engineers, Human Factors researchers and practitioners, organizational psychologists, system/product designers, sociologists, policy- and decision makers, scientists in government, industry and education, as well as assistive technology and rehabilitation experts.
