Download or read book The Empidoidea Diptera of Fennoscandia and Denmark Part IV written by M. Chvála and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth ‘empidid’ volume of the series ‘Fauna entomologica scandinavica’, covering the Scandinavian species of what is undoubtedly the most difficult Palaearctic genus of the family Empididae, the genus Hilara Meigen, 1822. The format of the present volume is the same as in the preceding three volumes. The General part refers only briefly to the morphology of the adults, and is followed by sections on the Classification, Life history (covering feeding habits, epigamic behaviour, phenology), and a section on Zoogeography. All these sections are arranged as in the preceding empidid volumes, including the zoogeography section in which the Scandinavian species are classified into the usual six distributional groups. The main part is the systematic treatment, which also follows the arrangement of the preceding empidid volumes. The ‘Key to Fennoscandian species’ includes several additional species which do not receive a separate treatment in the following systematic part, but they are all given a clear diagnosis in the discussion of the most closely related Scandinavian species. In all, 90 species of Hilara are treated in the present volume, of which 72 have been found to occur in Denmark and Fennoscandia. These further 18 species are included, as they may well occur within the area covered by this series although they have not yet been found there.

Download or read book Parasitoid Wasps of South East Asia written by Buntika A. Butcher and published by CABI. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parasitoid wasps are cosmopolitan, numerous and enormously diverse with probably one million or more species worldwide, most of which occur in the moist tropics. Their ecological importance is enormous although perhaps most evident in their major roles in the control of insect pest populations. In natural ecosystems they are integral in regulating populations of a vast number of insects, and therefore are key players in terrestrial food webs. Knowledge of their biology is still very poor because the current state of taxonomy is still in its infancy in most parts of the world. In this book, we provide an overview of the more than 30 families of parasitoid wasps that occur in the 11 countries in South East Asia. Particular emphasis is given to those most commonly encountered and reared, as well as to those used in biological control programmes. Outlines of the morphology, biology, ecology and behaviour of each family, as well as of various important subfamilies are presented. The current state of taxonomy in the region is summarised. Other chapters cover basic biology, behaviour, morphological terminology, phylogeny and methods of specimen collecting, preparation and rearing with particular relevance to the tropics. Modern molecular approaches to speeding taxonomic description of hyperdiverse taxa are considered in depth. All groups are illustrated with colour photographs. This book will be of value to professional entomologists, academics, entomology students and the growing body of amateur entomologists and insect photographers.
Download or read book The Flat Footed Flies written by Peter J. Chandler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Flat-footed Flies (Diptera: Opetiidae and Platypezidae) of Europe" presents a detailed account of the taxonomy, biology and distribution of the 44 European species of Opetiidae and Platypezidae. Two of these are here described as new to science. Known larvae develop in the larger fungi; adults are honey-dew feeders on broad leaves. Both families are characterised and proposals on their relationships and phylogeny are discussed. All European species are keyed and described in detail. Adult and larval biology are reviewed. The provincial distribution of 35 species occurring in Fennoscandia and Denmark is listed in a detailed catalogue. The work presents identification keys to genera and species and for each species descriptions and accounts of its nomenclature, biology and distribution. Known early stages are keyed to genera and described under each species. Altogether 427 line drawings and 6 beautiful colour illustrations accompany the text.
Download or read book The Siphonini Diptera Tachinidae of Europe written by Stig Andersen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume presents a detailed account of the taxonomy, biology and distribution of the European species of Siphonini. This group of tachinid Diptera totals 58 species in Europe of which 6 are here described as new to science. In most species, the immatures live as endoparasitolds of lepidopterous larvae, but a few species even attack tipulid larvae. Several species of Siphonini are of great economic interest as agents for the control of lepidopterous and tipulid pests in agriculture and forestry. An analysis and proposal on the systematic position of the Siphonini is given together with a key to larger taxonomic entities of Tachinidae. The generic classification is also critically emphasized. A separate chapter summarizes aspects of the group's natural history: life-cycles, mating behaviour, oviposition strategies, etc. The taxonomic part contains identification keys to genera and species, and for each species a diagnosis, a description and accounts on the nomenclature, biology and distribution is given. A separate catalogue details the provincial distribution of the 47 species occurring in Fennoscandia and Danmark. No less than 275 line drawings and 15 colour illustrations accompany the text.
Download or read book Theoretical Approaches to Biological Control written by Bradford A. Hawkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological control is the suppression of pest populations using predators, parasitoids and pathogens. Historically, biological control has largely been on a trial-and-error basis, and has failed more often than it has succeeded. However by developing theories based upon fundamental population principles and the biological characteristics of the pest and agent, we can gain a much better understanding of when and how to use biological control. This book gathers together recent theoretical developments and provides a balanced guide to the important issues that need to be considered in applying ecological theory to biological control. It will be a source of productive and stimulating thought for all those interested in pest management, theoretical ecology and population biology.
