Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running from a mutinous crew, sucked through a wormhole like in a bad sci-fi movie and slowly running out of booze . . . and that’s just the beginning of this non-traditional story that starts off as a simple captain’s log book and evolves into something more like a really warped and twisted TV show in text. Follow the Captain and crew on a series of seemingly random adventures, where it’s obvious it’s not just the Captain who’s been drinking. At some point you may ask yourself, is all this just coincidence or is there something dark and annoying on the horizon? The Captain seems to have a drinking problem, the problem being he never has enough to drink and people from his past keep showing up and ruining his buzz / Akki a corrupted artificial intelligence who occasionally takes over the Captain’s log has his own plans, mostly self-serving ones because he has nothing better to do. The rest of the crew, pirates, hot chicks, robots and a foul beaked little space penguin round out the Drunken Space Pirates and with all the wise cracks and shots aimed at everyone and everything its clear the alcohol flows rather freely within the D.S.P. Many of the off the wall characters of the D.S.P. are walking guilty pleasures who say what they feel, do what they want and just generally give it to life, pop culture and the universe in general with both barrels . . . and occasionally fish...

Book excerpt: Fish Wielder is kind of like Lord of the Rings, set in Narnia, if it was written by the guys who made Monty Python and the Holy Grail while they were listening to the music of They Might Be Giants. In ancient times, the Dark Lord Mauron cooked the most powerful magic chocolate dessert ever made, the Pudding of Power. One thousand and two years later, the evil leader of the Bad Religion, the Heartless One, is trying to recover the lost pudding in order to enslave the peoples of Grome. Only the depressed barbarian warrior Thoral Might Fist and his best friend, Brad the talking Koi fish, have a chance to save the world of Grome from destruction, but that's going to take a ridiculous amount of magic and mayhem. Thus begins the epically silly epic fantasy of epic proportions, Fish Wielder-book one of the Emperor of the Bracelet Trilogy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Tess Turner--at least, that's what I've always been told. I have a voice but it isn't mine. It used to say things so I'd fit in, to please my parents, to please my teachers. It used to tell the universe I was something I wasn't. It lied. It never occurred to me that everyone else was lying too. Fifteen-year-old Tess doesn't mean to become mute. At first, she's just too shocked to speak. And who wouldn't be? Discovering your whole life has been a lie because your dad isn't your real father is a pretty big deal. Terrified of the truth, Tess retreats into silence. Reeling from her family's betrayal, Tess sets out to discover the identity of her real father. He could be anyone--even the familiar-looking teacher at her school. Tess continues to investigate, uncovering a secret that could ruin multiple lives. It all may be too much for Tess to handle, but how can she ask for help when she's forgotten how to use her voice? In a brilliant study of identity, betrayal, and complex family dynamics, award-winning author Annabel Pitcher explores the importance of communication, even when we're faced with unspeakable truths.

Book The Theatre of Tom Murphy

Download or read book The Theatre of Tom Murphy written by Nicholas Grene and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Murphy shot to fame with the London production of A Whistle in the Dark in 1961, establishing him as the outstanding Irish playwright of his generation. The international success of DruidMurphy, the 2012-13 staging of three of his major plays by the Druid Theatre Company, served to underline his continuing appeal and importance. This is the first full scale academic study devoted to his theatre, providing an overview of all his work, with a detailed reading of his most significant texts. His powerful and searchingly honest engagement with Irish history and society is reflected in the violent Whistle in the Dark, the epic Famine (1968), the often hilarious Conversations on a Homecoming (1985) and the darkly Chekhovian The House (2000). Folklore and myth figure more prominently in the spiritual drama of The Sanctuary Lamp (1975), the Faustian Gigli Concert (1983) and the women's stories of Bailegangaire (1985). The range and reach of Murphy's theatre is demonstrated in this informed reading, supported by key interviews with the playwright himself and his most important theatrical and critical interpreters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first mainstream history of humour. Hilarious and well-researched, this book from household name William Hartston, a presenter, author and journalist, makes a perfect gift. Of all human qualities, humour is perhaps the most puzzling. In this very first history of humour, author and humourist William Hartston looks at every aspect of the evolution of humour and our attitudes towards it with a view to developing a proper Theory Of Everything Humorous. From comedy in ancient Greece and jokes in ancient Rome, to laughter in the Bible and the secret of comic delivery; from how humour changed following the American civil war, to how Mark Twain changed written comedy in the English-speaking world, William leaves no stone unturned in his quest to understand what makes us chuckle. Besides being academically well-founded, A History of Humour will, unlike almost everything else written on the subject, be both seriously humorous and humorously serious.

Book excerpt: Rather than paying tribute to the great discoveries and discoverers, the BOOK OF SCIENCE STUFF takes a fun look at the silly, hilarious, horrible underbelly of science. In a series of enjoyable short accounts, it focuses on the failures, reveals the petty squabbles, and introduces the "nerds" who labored in labs around the world. Check out the blunders--like scary Cold War experiments, idiotic research grants, and space study stupidity; meet the "Sigmund Frauds" and the real Frankensteins; and peek into the secret lives of scientists (if you dare). See how science makes the world go round--and directly affects everyone's daily lives. Scrutinize Hollywood's presentation of science on film and TV. And ponder the ways science sometimes pulls the wool over our eyes.
