Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost certainly the content of the following specification is something already well known, therefore it may seem superfluous here, nevertheless we prefer to propose it just the same.During the length of this story, we will neglect the obvious definition regarding what is commonly considered as an “act of conscious will”.We’d rather observe that by “act of unconscious will” we mean an act performed according to the will of which the person who acts is not conscious; therefore, that act is the result of an unconscious will/pulsion.Instead, by “involuntary act” we mean an act performed without any conscious or unconscious will by the person who acts; for example, it’s the case of those acts belonging to circumstances such as unexpectedly meeting someone/something while you’re walking: that meeting does not depend on the conscious or unconscious will of the person. About all that, this is not the adequate place to deal with either supernal will or coincidence, the latter not to be interpreted as a casualness but literary as the event of “co-inciding”, as synchronicity, according to the undersigned. The dream and the acts it contains, here represent a matter on their own.You can conceptualize as you please the distinction among a nihilist, a dissident, a dissentient and a subversive: according to the power system described in this story, the latter two could be considered as interconnected, for precautionary measures. You can imagine as you please the complexions and the jobs of the characters in this story. The Author

Entirely new material has also been developed based on examples of specific strategies supplied by actual learners, mostly drawn from a website featuring these strategies in the learning of Spanish grammar.Strategies in Learning and Using a Second language will be an invaluable resource for language teachers and researchers, as well as for administrators of second language programmes and for students of applied linguistics.

Download or read book The Language of Sexual Misconduct Cases written by Roger Shuy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Language of Sexual Misconduct Cases analyzes the many ways in which language plays a crucial role in sexual misconduct cases. Roger W. Shuy describes eleven court cases for which he served as an expert witness or consultant, and explains the issues at stake in each case for both lawyers and linguists. The book focuses on aspects of sexual misconduct that have not previously received the attention they deserve, such as: the language evidence of sexual misconduct in the workplace; cases of adult-to-child sexual misconduct with the family; and adult-adult sexual misconduct cases. Shuy explores the often-used linguistic analytical tools that are available to both the prosecution and the defense, including speech events, schemas, conversational strategies, and the resolution of strategic ambiguity. His work stresses the advantage of examining the larger contexts before making conclusions about the smaller linguistic units that are often called 'smoking guns.' The Language of Sexual Misconduct Cases will appeal to students and scholars of applied linguistics and forensic linguistics, and to lawyers working on sexual misconduct cases.
Download or read book The Cop and the Anthem written by O. Henry and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While some try to get out of prison, Soapy, the only character in O. Henry’s short story, tries to get into it. Soapy is a homeless guy who prefers the warm cell to the cold night under the New York sky. He does everything he can think of in order to draw the attention of the police. However without any success. Until he hears a magical organ anthem. How will this story develop? Will Soapy manage to get into jail or he will find another way to sort out his life? "The Cop and the Anthem" is a comical short story with a touch of irony which emphatically presents the lower class and the obstacles man has to face. William Sidney Porter (1862-1919), known simply as O. Henry, was a prolific American author of humorous literary pieces. His fame came exceptionally quickly and he became a bestselling author of short story collections, among the most famous being "Cabbages and Kings", "The Voice of the City", and "Strictly Business." As a result of the outstanding literature legacy that O. Henry left behind, there is an American annual award after his name, given to exceptional short stories.
Download or read book Recent Trends in Theoretical Psychology written by Henderikus J. Stam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was asked and, alas, with little reflection on the magnitude of the task, thoughtlessly consented, to take on the 'simple' job of writing a preface to the collection of essays comprising this volume. That I was asked to carry out this simple task was probably due to one consideration: I was the main representative of the host institution (Clark University) for the 1991 ISTP Conference, at which the talks, foreshadowing and outlining the 'extended remarks' here printed, were originally presented, and hence, as a token of gratitude, I was vouchsafed the honor of setting the stage. It did not dawn on me, until I began piecemeal to receive and accumulate, over a period of months, the remarkably diverse and heterogeneous essays precipitated by the conference, how mind-boggling it would be to pen a preface pertinent to such an aggregate of prima/acie unrelated articles. Typically, prefaces to collections of essays from different hands are attempts by the prefator or a pride of prefators to provide an overview, a concise map, of the complex terrain which readers are invited to enter; or to direct the attention of potential readers to what the editors take to be the essential or central themes of each of the variegated articles: a practice which, not infrequently and often not unjustifiably, irritates and even enrages individual authors, who object to the complexity, profundity, and nuanced character of their thought being reduced to clicMs and editorial equivalents of sound bites.
