Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of Honore De Balzac, Vol. 2 According to the respective dates of their production, the drama and the comedy included in this volume are the last ones that came from the pen of the indefatigable novelist. In fact, Balzac never witnessed the "first night" of Mercadet, which was presented at the Theatre du Gymnase Dramatique, on August 24, 1851, i. e., just one year and six days after the death of the great Frenchman. The reader will agree with the professional critics in recognizing, in both these plays, qualities that are lacking, to a certain degree, in the three dramatic efforts contained in Volume I. The action is more compact, the dialogue quicker and livelier, and the climaxes a great deal more satisfactory than in Quinola's Resources, for example. It seems as if the master had realized, to some extent, his deficiencies as a playwright and had forced himself, with his usual energy, to obey more closely the stem requirements of the stage. In our time of "theatre populaire" and "theatre naturaliste" he would have met with a very different welcome. The influence of Scribe and his imitators, all-powerful in those days, has so completely vanished from French literary circles that it seems to have never existed. Certainly none of the collections of the famous Frenchman's magnum opus, issued in England or America, and so justly popular on both sides of the Ocean, include these two volumes which are invariably comprised in the French sets of the same works. This singular omission needs perhaps a few words of explanation, as a kind of preface to this translation. To begin with, it is well known that publishers are often overcautious in their acceptance of translated works of fiction.
