Download or read book Plays by David Garrick and George Colman the Elder written by E. R. Wood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-06-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As playwrights David Garrick and George Colman the Elder showed themselves to be practical men of the theatre, providing excellent acting parts and well-constructed scenes capable of provoking laughter in any age. At one time they were rival managers of the two main London theatres, Drury Lane and Covent Garden, but their friendship was greater than their rivalry and survived until Garrick's death. This volume includes five plays: three short farces by Garrick, a full-length play by Colman and the famous collaborative work The Clandestine Marriage. The playwrights' abilities complemented each other and their eventual parting illustrates the divergence of comic styles that were popular at the time - the satirical and the sentimental. In his introduction Mr Wood describes the composition and expectations of the contemporary London audiences and the theatrical careers of the two playwright-managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally composed and published in 1981, this second book makes up two volumes of the plays of George Colman the Younger. Versatile, industrious, talented, Goerge Colman the Younger (1762-1836) followed Sheridan as England's most popular playwright. He wrote not only monologues, farces, pantomimes, comic operas, and straight comedies, but also hybrid three-act anticipations of melodrama.
Download or read book Plays by George Colman the Younger and Thomas Morton written by Barry Sutcliffe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-09-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains edited texts of five plays by two late eighteenth-century dramatists. The plays have been chosen to represent the range of the two playwrights and the variety of dramatic material on offer during the period. The full-length plays and afterpieces by George Colman the Younger and Thomas Morton were as popular as Sheridan's works in their time, but today are seldom performed or read. This discrepancy lies at the heart of Barry Sutcliffe's extensive introduction, which explores the critical and social background to the dramatic activity of the period and relates the dramas to the shifting demands of the theatre audiences for whom these plays were written.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetic Plays Of Wordsworth, Coleridge And Southey Convey Both Assurance And Anxiety - Balancing And Counterpointing Each Other And The Object Of The Present Study Is To Show How This Balancing And Counter-Pointing Enrich The Texture Of Their Plays. Truly, Their Creative Energy Was Considerably Cramped By The Condi¬Tions Prevailing In The Contemporary Theatre, And It Is Also True That They Show An Inadequate Grasp Of Dramatic Art And Dramatic Dialogue; But What Is Remarkable In Their Dramatic Works Is Their Capacity To Seize And Analyse The Spiritual Dilemma Of The Age; Their Persistent Moral Ardour Exposes The Ailments And Iniquities Afflicting The Social Order And Also Questions And Scrutinizes The Possible Modes Of Freedom. In Fact, This Is Mainly A Study Of The Moral Concerns In The Plays Of The Three Elder English Romantic Poets Their Anxiety About The Mystery And Potency Of Evil And How To Com¬Bat It, The Issues Of Ends And Means That Have Disturbed The Sensitive Rebels Throughout Ages. The Embivalent Poetical Characters, Their Gravitation Towards Drama, Struggle For Stage Success, The Contem¬Porary Theatrical Condition, The Un-Realized Projects, The Dramatic And Stylistic Qualities, Literary Issues, Etc. Have Also Been Discussed Incidentally.
