Download or read book The Dramatic Art of Lope De Vega written by Rudolph Schevill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Art of Lope De Vega: Together With La Dama Boba As regards a careful selection of his best plays, this is feasible and highly desirable since it clears away much dead weight. After reading available plays and forming an opinion of Lope 's art, no new play which I have been able to find and read, has modified my conclusion. This must also be the experience of others, and means that the large number of Lope 's plays is no drawback to printing an edition of his best comedies. Perhaps the suggestions of those who know Lope may aid in making out an admirable list of plays. At all events, would not thirty or forty small volumes, each containing at the most three plays, care fully reprinted, and, if need be, without notes or introduction, be a greater monument to Lope than any other that critics could devise? In connection with the manner Of reprinting his works, it must be remembered that no arbitrary procedure can ever again make Lope a modern, that the body of readers who will study him intelligently and sympathetically must ever remain small - no unusual fate for the greatest of our writers - and that a depend able reprint of the best available texts, not modernized, is all that can be asked. Finally, the format of the edition may be easily determined, if its main purpose be never lost from view, namely, to place a scholarly selection within reach of any student of Spanish letters the world over. Book The Golden Age Comedia

Download or read book The Golden Age Comedia written by Charles Ganelin and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the groundbreaking Spanish scholarship and editions of earlier generations and relying on research conducted in Spanish archives, this pioneering group of English-speaking scholars offers a new treatment of familiar material. The editors yoke together widely varying critical practices, including incisive New Critical readings and far-reaching explorations that draw on the most current European critical thought. In addition to these more strictly literary studies, there are interdisciplinary essays focusing on seventeenth- and twentieth-century reception and the social makeup of the comedia audience. The whole thus presents a balanced picture of the many ways in which the comedia can be viewed, and the contributors complement each other's work in often surprising ways, illuminating the same corpus from a number of perspectives.

Book What is Authorial Philology

Download or read book What is Authorial Philology written by Paola Italia and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stark departure from traditional philology, What is Authorial Philology? is the first comprehensive treatment of authorial philology as a discipline in its own right. It provides readers with an excellent introduction to the theory and practice of editing ‘authorial texts’ alongside an exploration of authorial philology in its cultural and conceptual architecture. The originality and distinction of this work lies in its clear systematization of a discipline whose autonomous status has only recently been recognised (at least in Italy), though its roots may extend back as far as Giorgio Pasquali. This pioneering volume offers both a methodical set of instructions on how to read critical editions, and a wide range of practical examples, expanding upon the conceptual and methodological apparatus laid out in the first two chapters. By presenting a thorough account of the historical and theoretical framework through which authorial philology developed, Paola Italia and Giulia Raboni successfully reconceptualize the authorial text as an ever-changing organism, subject to alteration and modification. What is Authorial Philology? will be of great didactic value to students and researchers alike, providing readers with a fuller understanding of the rationale behind different editing practices, and addressing both traditional and newer methods such as the use of the digital medium and its implications. Spanning the whole Italian tradition from Petrarch to Carlo Emilio Gadda, this ground-breaking volume provokes us to consider important questions concerning a text’s dynamism, the extent to which an author is ‘agentive’, and, most crucially, about the very nature of what we read.

Book excerpt: * Provides a deeper, long-term understanding of the nation and its people * Designed to supplement the "usual suspect" guide books A guidebook can show you where to go, a phrasebook what to say when you get there. Only Speak the Culture: Spain will lead you to the nation's soul. Spain boasts a rich and sometimes misunderstood culture, itself infused with the influences of other great and distant civilizations. Spanish life, language and culture in its widest sense is a major force of growing influence. How many outside it understand its origins and significance? Through exploring the people, the movements and the lifestyles that have shaped the Spanish experience, you will come to an intimate understanding of Spain and the Spanish. There are many travel guides and manuals on living in Spain. Speak the Culture: Spain is different: a superbly designed, informed and entertaining insight into Spanish life and culture and who the Spanish really are. For new residents, business travelers, holidaymakers, students and lovers of Spain everywhere, Speak the Culture: Spain is an engaging companion and guide to an enviably rich civilization at the heart of Europe. Excerpt "As you might expect Spain's traditional vernacular architecture isn't easily pigeonholed; regionalism generates marked variation. Available building materials and, more significantly, climate have always dictated how people build their houses or outbuildings. The Spaniards' approach to living arrangements is more easily summed up. They're nothing if not sociable; while northern Europeans anxiously section off their own plot of terra firma, in Spain they seem to enjoy living on top of each other, clustered in apartments and houses around the plaza mayor. It's not like they're short of space either--a population density of around 85 per sq km is one of the lowest in Europe."
