Book Intimate Investments in Drag King Cultures

Download or read book Intimate Investments in Drag King Cultures written by Kerryn Drysdale and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the globally recognised phenomenon of drag king performances as an opportunity for critical inquiry into the rise and fall of an urban scene for lesbian and queer women in Sydney, Australia (circa 1999-2012). Exploring how a series of weekly events provided the site for intimate encounters, Drysdale reveals the investments made by participants that worked to sustain the sense of a small world and anchor the expansive imaginary of lesbian cultural life. But what happens when scenes fade, as they invariably do? Intimate Investments in Drag King Cultures is unique in capturing the perspective of a scene at the moment of its decline, revealing the process by which a contemporary movement becomes layered with historical significance. Bringing together the theoretical tradition of scene studies with recent work on the affective potentialities of the everyday and the mobile urban spaces they inhabit, this book has appeal to scholars working across gender, sexuality and culture.

Download or read book King of Hearts written by Baker A. Rogers and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While drag subcultures have gained mainstream media attention in recent years, the main focus has been on female impersonators. Equally lively, however, is the community of drag kings: cis women, trans men, and non-binary people who perform exaggerated masculine personas onstage under such names as Adonis Black, Papi Chulo, and Oliver Clothesoff. King of Hearts shows how drag king performers are thriving in an unlikely location: Southern Bible Belt states like Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. Based on observations and interviews with sixty Southern drag kings, this study reveals how they are challenging the region’s gender norms while creating a unique community with its own distinctive Southern flair. Reflecting the region’s racial diversity, it profiles not only white drag kings, but also those who are African American, multiracial, and Hispanic. Queer scholar Baker A. Rogers—who has also performed as drag king Macon Love—takes you on an insider’s tour of Southern drag king culture, exploring its history, the communal bonds that unite it, and the controversies that have divided it. King of Hearts offers a groundbreaking look at a subculture that presents a subversion of gender norms while also providing a vital lifeline for non-gender-conforming Southerners.

Book In a Queer Time and Place

Download or read book In a Queer Time and Place written by Judith Halberstam and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length study of transgender representations in art, fiction, film, video, and music In her first book since the critically acclaimed Female Masculinity, Judith Halberstam examines the significance of the transgender body in a provocative collection of essays on queer time and space. She presents a series of case studies focused on the meanings of masculinity in its dominant and alternative forms’ especially female and trans-masculinities as they exist within subcultures, and are appropriated within mainstream culture. In a Queer Time and Place opens with a probing analysis of the life and death of Brandon Teena, a young transgender man who was brutally murdered in small-town Nebraska. After looking at mainstream representations of the transgender body as exhibited in the media frenzy surrounding this highly visible case and the Oscar-winning film based on Brandon's story, Boys Don’t Cry, Halberstam turns her attention to the cultural and artistic production of queers themselves. She examines the “transgender gaze,” as rendered in small art-house films like By Hook or By Crook, as well as figurations of ambiguous embodiment in the art of Del LaGrace Volcano, Jenny Saville, Eva Hesse, Shirin Neshat, and others. She then exposes the influence of lesbian drag king cultures upon hetero-male comic films, such as Austin Powers and The Full Monty, and, finally, points to dyke subcultures as one site for the development of queer counterpublics and queer temporalities. Considering the sudden visibility of the transgender body in the early twenty-first century against the backdrop of changing conceptions of space and time, In a Queer Time and Place is the first full-length study of transgender representations in art, fiction, film, video, and music. This pioneering book offers both a jumping off point for future analysis of transgenderism and an important new way to understand cultural constructions of time and place.

Book Queering Drag

Download or read book Queering Drag written by Meredith Heller and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatrical gender-bending, also called drag, is a popular form of entertainment and a subject of scholarly study. However, most drag studies do not question the standard words and ideas used to convey this performance genre. Drawing on a rich body of archival and ethnographic research, Meredith Heller illuminates diverse examples of theatrical gender-bending: male impersonation in variety and vaudeville (1860-1920); the "sexless" gender-bending of El Teatro Campesino (1960-1980); queer butch acts performed by black nightclub singers, such as Stormé DeLarverie, instigator of the Stonewall riots (1910-1970); and the range of acts that compose contemporary drag king shows. Heller highlights how, in each case, standard drag discourses do not sufficiently capture the complexity of performers' intents and methods, nor do they provide a strong enough foundation for holistically evaluating the impact of this work. Queering Drag offers redefinition of the genre centralized in the performer's construction and presentation of a "queer" version of hegemonic identity, and it models a new set of tools for analyzing drag as a process of intents and methods enacted to effect specific goals. This new drag discourse not only allows for more complete and accurate descriptions of drag acts, but it also facilitates more ethical discussions about the bodies, identities, and products of drag performers.

Are you ready to color away all your anxiety, depression, stress and woes? Are you ready to bring your favourite Drag Kings to life through coloring? Are you tired of boring colour therapy books about cats, mandalas, flowers and swearing? Are you ready for a new King to rule the kingdom of color therapy and coloring books? Well darling if you're ready give me a butch "Yes Sir" or a confidently masculine "Hell yeah Dude." A Drag performer is a person, most commonly male, who dresses in clothing of the opposite sex and will often exaggerate features, mannerisms and stereotypes that society holds about that sex. When most people think about Drag they picture Drag Queens, with their fabulously over the top make up and attitudes, however Drag Kings are becoming increasingly more popular within recent years. A Drag King will often be the epitome of heterosexual masculinity. The exaggeration is normally achieved through the application of synthetic facial hair, make up that masks femininity, stereotypically butch/ hunky outfits, comedy and endless jokes about sex, sports and other stereotypically male dominated spheres. While Drag is often associated with the LGBT community, especially gay men, there are Drag Kings of all sexualities, genders and identities. Drag has become a pop cultural phenomenon since the release of 'Ru Paul's Drag Race.' This coloring book contains hand drawn portraits of the following fabulous, hunky and butch Kings: Adam All, Hetty King, Ivory Onyx, Vesta Tilley, Landon Cider ad Mo B. DIck. The beauty, confidence, colorful aesthetic and exaggerated comedy of Drag Kings make them the perfect subject for a anti stress, anti depression and anti anxiety color therapy book. This book contains 15 professional designed illustrations of some of the world's most popular Drag Kings.

Download or read book Long Live the King written by Maite Escudero-Alías and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masculinity is no longer a monolithic category, if ever it was. Long Live the King is a solid piece of scholarship that explores in depth the drag king phenomenon as well as key theoretical texts by feminist, postcolonial and cultural thinkers. Maite Escudero-Alías delves into drag king culture and highlights its relevance for the study of the relationship between gender, sex, race and sexuality. Introduced by a well-informed theoretical chapter that traces the roots of queer theory, Long Live the King provides the reader with a rigorous textual and cultural examination of drag kings’ most innovative performances of masculinity in the USA and the UK. These chapters prove groundbreaking in their acute analyses of drag kings’ acts in different media, ranging from still images to live performances, documentaries, mainstream television series and literature. Theory and analysis blend perfectly and Escudero-Alías’s main contention in this research – the ambivalent nature of drag kings’ performances of masculinity – is conducted convincingly. This book constitutes an invaluable contribution to the field of gender studies and a fair assessment of the political impact of minority artistic practices in contemporary culture.
