Download or read book Children and the Internet written by Sonia Livingstone and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the internet really transforming children and young people’s lives? Is the so-called ‘digital generation’ genuinely benefiting from exciting new opportunities? And, worryingly, facing new risks? This major new book by a leading researcher addresses these pressing questions. It deliberately avoids a techno-celebratory approach and, instead, interprets children’s everyday practices of internet use in relation to the complex and changing historical and cultural conditions of childhood in late modernity. Uniquely, Children and the Internet reveals the complex dynamic between online opportunities and online risks, exploring this in relation to much debated issues such as: Digital in/exclusion Learning and literacy Peer networking and privacy Civic participation Risk and harm Drawing on current theories of identity, development, education and participation, this book includes a refreshingly critical account of the challenging realities undermining the great expectations held out for the internet - from governments, teachers, parents and children themselves. It concludes with a forward-looking framework for policy and regulation designed to advance children’s rights to expression, connection and play online as well as offline.

Download or read book Youth Pornography and the Internet written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-31 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet has changed the way we access the world. This is especially true for kids, who soak up new technologies like eager little sponges. They have access to an enormous array of material, including educational links, sports info, chat roomsâ€"and, unfortunately, pornography. But we must approach our need to protect children with care to avoid placing unnecessary restrictions on the many positive features of the Internet. Youth, Pornography, and the Internet examines approaches to protecting children and teens from Internet pornography, threats from sexual predators operating on-line, and other inappropriate material on the Internet. The National Research Council's Computer Science and Telecommunications Board explores a number of fundamental questions: Who defines what is inappropriate material? Do we control Internet access by a 17-year-old in the same manner as for a 7-year-old? What is the role of technology and policy in solving such a problem in the context of family, community, and society? The book discusses social and educational strategies, technological tools, and policy options for how to teach children to make safe and appropriate decisions about what they see and experience on the Internet. It includes lessons learned from case studies of community efforts to intervene in kids' exposure to Internet porn. Providing a foundation for informed debate, this very timely and relevant book will be a must-read for a variety of audiences.

Download or read book Redesigning the Internet for Content Regulation written by Lawrence J. Appleman and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-09-19 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet was designed for effective movement of data -accurate and complete- from any point to any other point. The communication protocols, technological foundation, and original governance of the Internet all worked toward this goal. In contrast, legal constraints on transmission of information often have the obverse objectives of limiting, controlling, or preventing this movement of content. This dissertation proposes that the fundamental architecture of the Internet must change in order to allow effective regulation and legal control of content on the Internet.

Download or read book Saving Our Children from the First Amendment written by Kevin W. Saunders and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Amendment is vital to our political system, our cultural institutions, and our routine social interactions with others. In this provocative book, Kevin Saunders asserts that freedom of expression can be very harmful to our children, making it more likely that they will be the perpetrators or victims of violence, will grow up as racists, or will use alcohol or tobacco. Saving Our Children from the First Amendment examines both the value and cost of free expression in America, demonstrating how an unregulated flow of information can be detrimental to youth. While the great value of the First Amendment is found in its protection of our most important political freedoms, this is far more significant for adults, who can fully grasp and benefit from the freedom of expression, than for children. Constitutional prohibitions on distributing sexual materials to children, Saunders proposes, should be expanded to include violent, vulgar, or profane materials, as well as music that contains hate speech. Saunders offers an insightful meditation on the problem of protecting our children from the negative effects of freedom of expression without curtailing First Amendment rights for adults.
