Book Regulatory Control of Radioactive Discharges to the Environment

Download or read book Regulatory Control of Radioactive Discharges to the Environment written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Guide makes recommendations concerning the regulatory process for controlling the discharge of liquid and gaseous effluents to the environment from normal controlled operations of practices in which radioactive material is used. It provides guidance on how to meet the requirements established in the Safety Requirements publication, Safety Standards Series No. WS-R-2, Predisposal Management of Radioactive Waste, Including Decommissioning (2000). It expands on and interprets the principles stated in the Safety Fundamentals publications: Safety Series No. 111-F, The Principles of Radioactive Waste Management (1995) and Safety Series No. 120, Radiation Protection and the Safety of Radiation Sources (1996). It also elaborates on how to fulfil the requirements established in Safety Series No. 115, International Basic Safety Standards for Protection against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources (1996), and Safety Standards No. GS-R-1, Legal and Governmental Infrastructure for Nuclear, Radiation, Radioactive Waste and Transport Safety (2000).

Book Evaluation of Guidelines for Exposures to Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials

Download or read book Evaluation of Guidelines for Exposures to Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naturally occurring radionuclides are found throughout the earth's crust, and they form part of the natural background of radiation to which all humans are exposed. Many human activities-such as mining and milling of ores, extraction of petroleum products, use of groundwater for domestic purposes, and living in houses-alter the natural background of radiation either by moving naturally occurring radionuclides from inaccessible locations to locations where humans are present or by concentrating the radionuclides in the exposure environment. Such alterations of the natural environment can increase, sometimes substantially, radiation exposures of the public. Exposures of the public to naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) that result from human activities that alter the natural environment can be subjected to regulatory control, at least to some degree. The regulation of public exposures to such technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory and advisory organizations is the subject of this study by the National Research Council's Committee on the Evaluation of EPA Guidelines for Exposures to Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials.

Book Radiation Protection Programmes for the Transport of Radioactive Material

Download or read book Radiation Protection Programmes for the Transport of Radioactive Material written by IAEA and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations on meeting the requirements established in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev. 1), Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, 2018 Edition, for a radiation protection programme for the transport of radioactive material. The objectives of a radiation protection programme for the transport of radioactive material are to provide for adequate consideration of radiation protection measures in transport; to ensure that the system of radiological protection is adequately applied; to enhance a safety culture in the transport of radioactive material; and to provide practical measures to meet these objectives. The recommendations provided in this Safety Guide are applicable to the transport of radioactive material by all modes on land, water, or in the air, including transport that is incidental to the use of the radioactive material. The intended audience for this Safety Guide includes competent authorities, consignors, carriers, consignees, and operators of ports (e.g. harbours, seaports and airports). It will also be of interest to the employees of public authorities (customs authorities, harbour authorities, port authorities) concerning activities associated with the transport of radioactive material that involve radiation exposure.

Book Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities

Download or read book Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, the National Cancer Institute initiated an investigation of cancer risks in populations near 52 commercial nuclear power plants and 10 Department of Energy nuclear facilities (including research and nuclear weapons production facilities and one reprocessing plant) in the United States. The results of the NCI investigation were used a primary resource for communicating with the public about the cancer risks near the nuclear facilities. However, this study is now over 20 years old. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested that the National Academy of Sciences provide an updated assessment of cancer risks in populations near USNRC-licensed nuclear facilities that utilize or process uranium for the production of electricity. Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations near Nuclear Facilities: Phase 1 focuses on identifying scientifically sound approaches for carrying out an assessment of cancer risks associated with living near a nuclear facility, judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of various statistical power, ability to assess potential confounding factors, possible biases, and required effort. The results from this Phase 1 study will be used to inform the design of cancer risk assessment, which will be carried out in Phase 2. This report is beneficial for the general public, communities near nuclear facilities, stakeholders, healthcare providers, policy makers, state and local officials, community leaders, and the media.

Book Implications for Occupational Radiation Protection of the New Dose Limit for the Lens of the Eye

Download or read book Implications for Occupational Radiation Protection of the New Dose Limit for the Lens of the Eye written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides interim guidance on the implications of the new dose limit for the lens of the eye for occupational radiation protection that is applicable to planned, exposure situations. The new dose limit for the lens of the eye was included in GSR Part 3: Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards, Interim edition, (2011). In the longer term, the guidance provided in this publication will form the basis for the consensus guidance in relation to the new dose limit for the lens of the eye that is to be provided in two safety guides currently being developed.
