This standard account collapsed, however, when a handful of insights undermined the traditional historical method, the method long enlisted by historians for eliciting facts from sources. In response to these insights, a new historical method gradually emerged. Rewriting Ancient Jewish History critiques the traditional historical method and makes a case for the new one, illustrating how to write anew ancient Jewish history. At the heart of the traditional historical method lie three fundamental presumptions. The traditional historical method regularly presumes that multiple versions of a text or tradition are equally authentic; it presumes that many ancient Jewish sources are the products of largely immanent forces of cloistered Jewish communities; and, barring any local grounds for suspicion, it presumes that most ancient Jewish texts faithfully reflect their sources and reliably recount events. Rewriting Ancient Jewish History unfurls the failings of this approach; it promotes the new historical method which circumvents the flawed traditional presumptions while plotting anew the limits of rational argumentation in historical inquiry. Book excerpt: Glorification Spells from a Priestly Milieu in Ancient Egypt presents the first comprehensive edition of an ancient Egyptian ritual composition entitled the Glorification Recited on Each Due Occasion of the Embalming Place, a collection of glorification spells attested in five papyri from around 300 BCE. Arguably the most significant extensive ancient Egyptian ritual text still awaiting systematic study, its constituent spells preserve and transmit religious ideas which resonated with the ancient Egyptians for millennia. The collection and adaptation of these spells into a single coherent ritual work bear witness to the remarkable creativity of the priests and scribes of the latest periods of Egyptian history. Much of this process may be attributable to members of a single family or a small circle of colleagues living in a particular place during a circumscribed period of time, highlighting the importance of individual or small-group agency, not only in preserving and transmitting religious traditions, but in transforming them as well. Glorification spells were recited in the embalming place and elsewhere. They were intended, not only to revivify those to whom they were addressed, restoring their mental and physical faculties, but to secure their elevation to a new, exalted status, that of an akh, or glorified spirit, as well. This status integrated the beneficiary within the hierarchy of gods and other glorified spirits in the next world. This volume places the Glorification Recited on Each Due Occasion of the Embalming Place in its wider historical, religious, and sociological context. It includes a hieroglyphic synopsis of all known examples of the spells, and a transliteration and translation of the copy of them preserved in P. Louvre N. 3129, the type version. In a line-by-line commentary, variant readings in the parallels are recorded and salient points of interest, whether grammatical, lexicographical, historical, topographical, or theological, are discussed. An extensive glossary, a general bibliography, an index, and photographic reproductions are provided, alongside hieroglyphic transcriptions of the papyri.

In a literal "upstairs, downstairs" arrangement, the latter women sometimes take on apartment cleaning for clients in the building. At the center of the book are a number of ironies about patriarchy. On the surface, husbands have absolute control over whether or not their wives work, but some women work in secret, and those "doorkeeper" husbands who allow their wives to work often provide child care themselves. Ironically, the very constraints on the spatial and social mobility of the women creates a labor market in which domestic workers' labor is expensive and not readily forthcoming, which, in turn, gives them a degree of power in negotiating their relationship with their middle-class employers. Untidy Gender offers insights not only into the gender and class dynamics of Turkish society, but contributes to the refinement of central terms of feminist scholarship and research on work in the informal sector, cross-class relations between women, gender and class inequality, and women's experiences of modernity and urbanization. The author ends with a personal account of her own difficulties with the class tensions of the maid-employer relationship.
