Book War over Lemuria

Download or read book War over Lemuria written by Richard Toronto and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life magazine described the Shaver Mystery as "the most celebrated rumpus that rocked the science fiction world." Its creators said it was a "new wave in science fiction." Critics called it "dangerous nonsense" and labeled its fans the lunatic fringe. Whatever else the Shaver Mystery was, it became a worldwide sensation between 1945 and 1948, one of the greatest controversies to hit the science fiction genre. Today these stories of the remnants of a sinister ancient civilization living in caverns under the Earth are an all but forgotten sidebar to the historical record. The Shaver Mystery began as a series of science fiction yarns in Amazing Stories nearly 70 years ago. The men behind it, Ray Palmer and Richard Shaver, were derided and seldom understood by a fandom that did its best to sweep them under the carpet of history. Though Ray Palmer was one of the earliest and biggest names in SF fandom, credited with many firsts in his field, his fannish brethren have roundly ignored him, thanks to the Shaver Mystery. What is the truth behind these men and their "mystery"? This is the question writers and editors that promoted the Shaver Mystery try to answer as they reveal the behind-the-scenes story of the phenomenon known as "Shaverism."

Book The New Games DOCTORS Play

Download or read book The New Games DOCTORS Play written by Juan Manuel Ferrera Diaz and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "New Games Doctors Play" are essays analyzing how the zeal for diagnosis is interfering with the mission to heal patients in hospitals. The doctors are co-dependants in this game they willingly play because it takes away the pressure of finding a treatment and also takes away some of the responsibility. This practice however is contrary to the medical student's pledge: First do no harm." The account that follows these essays, "Fever" documents how harmful diagnosis can be to a frail patient who above all needs rest to recuperate.

Book Remembering Jim

Download or read book Remembering Jim written by Nancy Carroll McEndree and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They called him White Chocolate. They were the black transient society who lived on the streets and back alleys with Jim in Raleigh and Jonesboro, North Carolina. They took care of one another; they had each other's backs because they were the outcast, the dispensable, the displaced and forgotten, living in the asphalt jungle. They lived and existed any way they could. They were and are even today the pimps, the prostitutes, the drug and alcohol addicts, the homeless, and the mentally impaired who fall through the cracks of an unjust society that cares little about them and would rather not even see them. These throwaways of refined society loved Jim and gave him a sense of belonging. They helped Jim crawl out of the pit of hopelessness and ultimately into the unity and happiness with the family of God. This is the true story of a severely abused child who modeled his dysfunctional upbringing and became a pitiless, selfish, absentee husband and father. Jim abandoned his family and became so despondent and nugatory that he hit the skids. While living in a halfway house and later on the streets in the ghetto, Jim went to school, earned a degree in divinity, and later became a pastor. Jim found his happiness in living with, teaching, and caring for these refugees who are oftentimes deemed as reprobates by an unmindful and uncaring society. This is Jim's story. I am his sister, and I wrote this narrative, as I lived some of it. The rest of the story I penned from the dying lips of a veteran who died from the toxic effects of Agent Orange that he was poisoned with while serving this country in the Korean War. As I close this book of remembering, I open through tears and say, "Jim, I miss you. I wrote your story and I didn't 'pretty it up'!"

Book Doctors From Hell

  • Author : Vivien Spitz
  • Publisher : Sentient+ORM
  • Release : 2005-01-04
  • ISBN : 1591810981
  • Pages : 203 pages

Download or read book Doctors From Hell written by Vivien Spitz and published by Sentient+ORM. This book was released on 2005-01-04 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A court reporter for the Nuremberg war crimes trial of Nazi doctors reveals the shocking truth of their torture and murder in this monumental memoir. Vivien Spitz reported on the Nuremberg trials for the U.S. War Department from 1946 to 1948. In Doctors from Hell, she vividly describes her experiences both in and out of the courtroom. A chilling story of human depravity and ultimate justice, this important memoir includes trial transcripts as well as photographs used as evidence. The author describes the experience of being in bombed-out, dangerous, post-war Nuremberg. She recounts dramatic courtroom testimony and the reactions of the defendants to the proceedings. Witnesses tell of experiments in which they were deprived of oxygen; frozen; injected with malaria, typhus, and jaundice; subjected to the amputation of healthy limbs; forced to drink seawater for weeks at a time; and other horrors. Doctors from Hell is a significant addition to the literature on World War II and the Holocaust, medical ethics, human rights, and the barbaric depths to which human beings can descend. “In this personal account of her service in the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, Vivien Spitz continues to contribute to the cause of human rights.” —President James Carter
