Book excerpt: Jack Taylor, a retired U.S. Army MSgt now living in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar and working as a private investigator is called upon to investigate a kidnapping that has taken place on the Tunisian island of Djerba. As he tracks down the perpetrators he discovers the abduction of the young woman was not simply a local crime, but one involving a European criminal gang as well as persons linked to a foreign government. The complicated pursuit of the abducted woman leads Jack from the island of Djerba to the island of Malta and ultimately to Sicily. Jack is obliged to return to the island of Djerba almost immediately following the resolution of the kidnapping, but this time as part of a CIA-sponsored paramilitary force tasked with rescuing a U.S. Army covert signals team—a mission where his previous career as a special forces operator is once again put to the test. Then, back in Gibraltar, Jack is promptly recruited by Britain’s MI-5 to assist in exposing an espionage effort meant to weaken the Territory’s ties with Great Britain.

Download or read book Nation Building and Community in Israel written by Dorothy Willner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author approaches the intricate process of nation-building in Israel through an examination of transformations which took place within a major development sector, rural land settlement, during Israel's first decade of statehood. Based on four years of observation in Israel, the study analyzes the ways in which this state worked out the urgent problems that confront a new nation, and demonstrates in vivid ethnographic detail how the policies thus formed made themselves felt in particular communities. The result is a clear picture of the interaction of national planning and the realities of village life in post-statehood Israel, and an original contribution to the anthropology of complex societies. Download or read book Islamist Radicalisation in North Africa written by George Joffe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current climate of political extremism and violence, much attention has been directed towards "radicalisation" as the reasons behind such courses of action, along with a conviction that those who are radicalised represent an irrational deviation from the conventionally accepted norms of social and political behaviour. This book focuses on the current issues and analytical approaches to the phenomenon of radicalisation in North Africa. Taking a comprehensive approach to the subject, it looks at the processes that lead to radicalisation, rather than the often violent outcomes. At the same time, chapters expand the discussion historically and conceptually beyond the preoccupations of recent years, in order to develop a more holistic understanding of a complex individual and collective process that has represented a permanent challenge to dominant political, social and, on occasion, economic norms. With contributions from academics and policy-makers within and outside the region, the book is a comprehensive investigation of Islamist Radicalisation. As such, it will be of great interest to academics and students investigating North Africa and terrorism, as well as specialists in radicalism and extremism.
