Book excerpt: "Michael Cisco is of a different kind and league from almost anyone writing today, and The Narrator is Cisco at his startling best." -CHINA MIEVILLE, author of Perdido Street Station "An extraordinary story of war and the supernatural that combines the creepiness of Alien with the clear-eyed gaze of Full Metal Jacket. Like The Other Side if it included soldiers who could glide over the water, a mysterious tower right out of early David Lynch, and infused with Kafka's sense of the bizarre. Destined to be a classic." -JEFF VANDERMEER, author of the Southern Reach trilogy "The Narrator is not a subversive fantasy novel. It eliminates all other fantasy novels and starts the genre anew. You must begin your journey here." -NICK MAMATAS, author of Move Under Ground and Love is the Law

Book A Case for the Divinity of Jesus

Download or read book A Case for the Divinity of Jesus written by Dean L. Overman and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether Jesus was really the Son of God or not is a central question for Christians—and one that has provoked heated debate since the time of Jesus' birth. Dean L. Overman examines the earliest Christian records to build a compelling case for the divinity of Jesus. Addressing questions raised by books such as Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus and Elaine Pagels' The Gnostic Gospels, Overman builds a carefully reasoned case for Jesus truly being the Son of God.

Book The Good Day I Died

Download or read book The Good Day I Died written by Desmond Kon and published by Penguin Random House Sea. This book was released on 2019 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desmond Kon's most confessional writing, relating the story of his death, and his transformed life after his return. In 2007, Desmond Kon died, and came back to life. This is better understood as a near-death experience (NDE). Fresh from studying world religions at Harvard, Desmond's NDE shared remarkable consistency with other documented NDE accounts, such as encountering otherworldly beings, altered time-space realms, and the classic tunnel of light. Post-NDE symptoms included paranormal sightings. How did Desmond make meaning of his NDE given his academic background in world religions? He even took a class on angelology -- how then did he perceive the angelic beings he encountered? Framed as a quasi-memoir, The Good Day I Died is constructed as a self-administered interview, allowing the account its moments of deep intimation. Moving beyond the current literature's attempts at legitimizing the NDE, The Good Day I Died weaves in excerpts of Desmond's literary oeuvre, which help shed light on the indelible impact of his NDE. This book represents Desmond's most confessional writing yet, relating the story of his death, and his transformed life after his return.

  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book A Body of Divinity written by Thomas Watson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-29 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Watson's Body of Practical Divinity is one of the most precious of the peerless works of the Puritans; and those best acquainted with it, prize it most. Watson was one of the most concise, racy, illustrative, and suggestive of those eminent divines who made the Puritan age the Augustan period of evangelical literature. There is a happy union of sound doctrine, heart-searching experience and practical wisdom throughout all his works; and his Body of Divinity is, beyond all the rest, useful to the student and the minister. He explains the Doctrines of God, Divine Sovereignty, Salvation, Sin, and the Trinity with remarkable clarity. His thinking is sound and Scriptural. Puritan theology sets the diadem of our salvation on Christ, and Christ alone, and it is solely on the basis of his meritorious work that we are saved.

A haunting young adult novel from the turn of the century. Two starving captives frozen in agony. A young boy from a doting family. A man in a cheap Halloween mask. A succession of portraits of people trapped in their own identities, some of whom insist on their own ideas because they would have nothing at all without them. Book English Students at Leiden University 1575 1650

Download or read book English Students at Leiden University 1575 1650 written by Daniela Prögler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest and most renowned Dutch university, Leiden was an attractive proposition for travelling foreign students in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Alongside offering an excellent academic program and outstanding facilities, Leiden was also able to cater to the desires of noble students providing various extra-curricular activities. Leiden was the most popular continental university among English students, and this book investigates the 831 English students who studied there between 1575 and 1650. The preference of English students for Leiden was, on the one hand, related to close Anglo-Dutch relations of the period, and these are investigated with respect to politics, economy, religion, culture, as well as to the large 'stranger' communities residing in the respective countries. On the other hand, Leiden's attraction resulted from its academic achievements, which are traced back to the conditions in the United Provinces, the limited influence of the Calvinist Church, Leiden's professors, as well as the university's facilities. The core of this study is an exhaustive quantitative study of the composition of the Leiden student population in general, and that of its English segment in particular. Information is provided on the duration of the studies of English students at Leiden, their age, social background and fields of study. We learn about the careers of English students both prior to and after their time at Leiden, and of the motivation that led the English to choose Leiden over other continental universities. More than a study of one group of students at one university, this book is a valuable contribution to the history of early modern universities and will appeal to a wide international readership interested in cultural and intellectual history as well as in Anglo-Dutch relations.
