Book The Divine Enchantment

Download or read book The Divine Enchantment written by John Gneisenau Neihardt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creative energy that would in time produce A Cycle of the West and Black Elk Speaks is apparent in his first book, The Divine Enchantment, published in 1990 when he was nineteen years old. It can be viewed as an early version of the philosophy of spiritual awareness that Neihardt articulated twenty-five years later in Poetic Values. They are reprinted together for the first time in this Landmark Edition. A narrative poem bursting with youthful enthusiasm, The Divine Enchantment reveals Neihardt not as an ordinary poet but as a visionary bard. Inspired by his reading of Eastern philosophy, it is a Hindu myth with Christian parallels. The virgin heroine, Devanaguy, fulfills prophecy in bearing Krishna, the incarnation of Vishnu, in spite of imprisonment by a jealous and fearful king. Neihardt?s vision of the union of spirit and matter, of reason and higher consciousness, introduces themes he was to expand on in his later writings. Poetic Values, a series of lectures published in 1925, speaks of the common need for self-enlightenment. Drawing on sources ranging from the Upanishads to psychology textbooks, Neihardt argues that poetry can provide a balanced philosophy to live by in bridging the gap between Western materialism and Eastern otherworldliness. Poetry links the objective with the subjective, the real with the imaginary, and for the reader of Poetic Values, as for the heroine of The Divine Enchantment, the highest self-enlightenment comes with self-forgetfulness. Blair Whitney writes that, in comparing these two works, ?one can see [Neihardt?s] strong, consistent development from a boy who loved words and had big dreams to a mature poet who found ways to realize his ideals and to communicate them to a large audience of readers.?

Book Theatrical Unrest

Download or read book Theatrical Unrest written by Sean McEvoy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2017 Theatre Book Prize What is it about theatre, compared to other kinds of cultural representation, which provokes such a powerful reaction? Theatrical Unrest tells the compelling tales of ten riots whose cause lies on stage. It looks at the intensity and evanescence of the live event and asks whether theatre shares its unrepeatable quality with history. Tracing episodes of unrest in theatrical history from an Elizabethan uprising over Shakespeare's Richard II to Sikhs in revolt at Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti's Behzti, Sean McEvoy chronicles a selection of extreme public responses to this inflammatory art form. Each chapter provides a useful overview of the structure and documentation of one particular event, juxtaposing eyewitness accounts with newspaper reports and other contemporary narratives. Theatrical Unrest is an absorbing account of the explosive impact of performance, and an essential read for anyone interested in theatre’s often violent history.

Book excerpt: What is the one aspect of this broken world that, when you see it, touch it, get near it, you just can’t stand? Very likely, that firestorm of frustration reflects your holy discontent, a reality so troubling that you are thrust off the couch and into the game. It’s during these defining times when your eyes open to the needs surrounding you and your heart hungers to respond that you hear God say, “I feel the same way about this problem. Now, let’s go solve it together!”Bill Hybels invites you to consider the dramatic impact your life will have when you allow your holy discontent to fuel instead of frustrate you. Using examples from the Bible, his own life, and the experiences of others, Hybels shows how you can find and feed your personal area of holy discontent, fight for it when things get risky, and follow it when it takes a mid-course turn. As you live from the energy of your holy discontent, you’ll fulfill your role in setting what is wrong in this world right!

Book The God Instinct

  • Release : 2023-10-11
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book The God Instinct written by Tom Stella and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this simple, elegant, and literate book, Tom Stella shows what can happen when we move from certitude to doubt, from stability to searching, when cherished beliefs are cast adrift; when life experiences seem to tell us that the "right" answers no longer seem so "right." Such a time is an enriching time, he tells us, a time when life is no longer a matter of going from "question to answer, but from question to question." And like the many, many people he has encountered in his work, he concludes that "life in all its messiness is a sacred affair." This is the point, author Tom Stella believes, when we become seekers--seekers of truth and spiritual maturity. Although focused on the fundamental themes of the spiritual life, The God Instinct successfully bridges the spiritual and the practical. Stella is able to ground his insights in the realities of daily living with the wisdom gleaned from his own journey.

Book The Word of God and Theology

Download or read book The Word of God and Theology written by Karl Barth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic volume of Barth's essays was first published in 1924 under the title 'Das Wort Gottes und die Theologie'. In this brand new English edition all the critical apparatus is translated, each chapter including an explanatory passage giving general historical context and details of Barth's own biography. These essays represent the very best of Barth's work. Far from being superceded by the Church Dogmatics, indeed, a thorough understanding of the Church Dogmatics must presuppose a close knowledge of them. The style is vivid, deeply engaged and engaging, often expressionistic (making frequent use of irony and hyperbole). Peter Gay described Weimar culture as a "dance on the edge of a volcano." If so, then it was essays like these that provided the music.
