Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Tragedy: A Drama of the Christ City of our Lord's life and labour, to project the Gospel narratives upon their historical background, in an imaginary reconstruction of the scenes that culminated in the Tragedy of Calvary. This sug gests and requires the dramatic form - not, of course, with any view to representation on the stage - but as the only form that eliminates discus sion and preaching, that reduces description to its simplest and, at the same time, its most definite terms, and that presents the characters of the story to move and speak in their own proper persons. Considered merely as a literary form, the Drama has been developed by ancient and modern masters into the most perfect vehicle of expression for the high est action and passion, and it would seem that the greatest Of tragedies is entitled to telling in the best available form. Book The Divine Comedy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Divine Comedy Classic Reprint written by Dante Alighieri and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Comedy Every fresh attempt at translating the Di vine Comedy affords proof of Dante's asser tion that nothing harmonized by a musical bond can be transmuted from its own speech without losing all its sweetness and harmony. The coalescence of the music and the meaning Of the verse, in the perfection of which the life of poetry consists, cannot be transferred from one tongue to another. A new harmony may be substituted, but the difference is fatal. The translation may have a life of its own, but it is not the life of the original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Divina Commedia: The Divine Comedy As to the form and phrasing of this translation, a few explanations seem desirable. This is a line-for-line translation retaining the original rime-form, - terza rima, or triple rime. In using the expression "line-for-line translation," it is not meant to imply that every line will be found in the translation in the exact place where it is found in the original. The substance of every sentence or paragraph presents itself to the translator as material to be freely rehandled in accordance with the exigencies of the rime and the requirements of English idiom. It will be found that the number of lines in every canto of the translation corresponds to that of the original. In conformity with the genius of our language and the practice of our poets, the Italian hendecasyllabic line is rendered by the normal English line of ten syllables. As almost every Italian word ends with a vowel sound, the feminine or double rime, involving a line of eleven syllables, is normal in that language. To what issue the attempt to transplant the Italian eleven-syllable line into English leads, has been shown by the experiment of Lee-Hamilton with the Inferno. Like other poets of our tongue, I have introduced the eleven-syllable lines here and there, sometimes in considerable numbers, with a view to special expressiveness. With respect to the choice of the English triple rime, I will frankly admit that the late Professor Charles Eliot Norton very strongly, although very kindly, advised me against it. Certainly there was little to encourage one in the results attained by those who had previously attempted to render the Poem in this form. To argue that because no one had succeeded with terza rima in English, failure was necessarily a foregone conclusion, seemed to me a plain begging of the question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judas Maccabæus; Michael Angelo; Translations The writing of this tragedy followed immedi ately upon the dismissal of 17m Divine Tragedy, and was in a measure an Ofishoot from it. While the poet's mind was charged with the contempla tion of Judaic scenes, there came back to him the thought of a tragedy based upon the history of Judas Maccabwus, which had first visited him twenty years before. In 1850, he had entered it in his note-book as a subject for a poem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
